Crops Inside Structures?

Post » Mon Jan 18, 2016 11:03 pm

So ive done some searching on google and haven't come up with anything so far, but im curious to know if the crops that you plant are able to be placed inside structures....................for example, lets say one wants to build a large indoors type "greenhouse" and have all the farmers wear lab coats and make it seem like some sort of artificial (or whatever) type food supply farm.

I know this place wouldn't have floors, since crops need dirt, but it would be enclosed by walls and have ceilings and essentially be blocking the sunlight.

Does anyone know if they coded the crops to actually sense if they are in the "open" game world and perhaps not yield food if indoors?

I have hours before I can get on and test this so I figured I would just put the question out there.

Use the http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1478/? mod.

Greenhouses are available in the http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4453/? mod.

Pretty sure they do not need sunlight. Haven't tested it in depth (e.g., by building a completely enclosed structure and seeing what happened), but I've had plenty of crops that were in shade as a result of paraqets and overhanging chunks of wall and no obvious signs of them doing what they would do in real life: die.

I built a roof structure over my crops & they're doing fine.

Ahhh haaaa.......so far so good! Can I ask what pieces you used to make the structure and how big/tall is it?

I should correct what I said: "overhanging chunks of _buildings_ not just walls"

My farm at Oberland is probably half in permanent shade as a result of a gigantic "floating" building with a floor two stories up. It isn't completely over top of the whole farm, but it overhangs a significant chunk of it. Same for a small plot of Tato at Grey Garden: almost completely in shade, no direct sunlight at any time of day. I've picked them at least three times since they have been shaded like this.

See this is where my curiosity kicks in because I already assumed that the developers realized people will build up and build big possibly shading crops, and they made it ok to eliminate all the issues people would have with crops while trying to build..........so im left wondering if it will still work with dedicated walls and ceilings directly above and around crops......uggghhh I hate waiting till I can get home to test!

I can almost guarantee that they didn't program sunlight as a factor for crops, just like you don't need water for them. All you need is a settler digging around the dirt for a healthy plant. :P

It was floor that was overhanging at first, but then I built walls. I did wonder if this would effect them, but so far they're still alive. I did have a back up crop area just in case my plan suddenly went sideways.

Crops just need dirt since they need to be placed in dirt. Other then that they have no requirements. I have an entire garden inside of a shack as a hydroponics lab (it's just plants with bright lights above them) and my settlers harvest them fine.

So long as they have access to dirt, yes. You can build walls around them directly onto the ground. The hard part is finding land flat enough, as vanilla walls do not have foundations.

Build a shack foundation around a certain area but keep the center free of any flooring or the foundations themselves, build the small step so your settlers can get to the food and done. There are some areas that have flat enough ground though.

Yep this works. At starlight I put two water purifiers in the pool, planted crops around it, built shack foundations all along the perimeter of the crops, built walls, then a roof. Its essentially a barn with a pool and crops growing around it. Completely enclosed.

I did the exact same thing, the crops, purifier and generator are all completely sealed except for a tower that extends 6 floors straight up to my linear castle that extends from the top of the diner to the top of the screen. The only access to the entire structure is at the top of the screen. When attacked, my sniper carrying settlers actually fire from the battlements all the way down to the ground. Shotgun carrying and melee settlers somehow leave the market way up in the air and materialize on the ground to counterattack. It is [censored] awesome to watch. I just PA onto the ground from way up high if I feel like getting bloody.

Hopefully those planters will be patched in as something we can make and use so that we can even have a floor :D

Yes, they will grow in an enclosed structure. But the enemies will still find their way inside no matter what. My settlement at Somerville is completely enclosed.

as long as they are in dirt, they grow. You can totally enclose the area. unless they make the homemaker mods available for consoles.

They can grow anywhere if you use the doormat glitch, I've got quite a few in buildings, a few floors up that 'work'.

That is a nice Red Rocket base ;) Very "Megaton-esque."

All of my bases are strictly pragmatic. Should start taking more time to make them look cool, now that I'm an OP filthy rich Lone Wanderer.

They don't need sunlight. I made my main settlement in hangman's alley and made it 3 storied. My crops are completely blocked from the sun and they work fine.
