cross-game mesh exchanging - what's the issue?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:57 pm

Okay, Fallout: new vegas is out - buggy as hell but out nontheless - and there are loads of new weapon, item, armor, ect meshes and stuff in it, all brilliant for a modder. However, is it really true that Bathesda will not allow meshes from fallout new vagas to be used in mods for fallout 3, and vice versa?

Yes, its true.

Bethesda simply won't allow assets from any game to be ported. Its easier to make it a blanket restriction rather than deal with the minefield of declaring exceptions. Plus some assets they used may be from third partys and only licensed for the one game.

Oh Frell

do you think that if asked, bathesda might be willing to release a 'mods pack' for Fallout 3/ New Vegas containing the meshes from each that they Can use for more then one game?

Probably not. Could try asking, but I doubt they would.

Highly unlikely. While Bethesda has made modding available in their games, they haven't really gone out of their way in order to support the community. They've provided the tools but nothing else.

BethesdaGS has been done with Fallout 3 for a while. That means they are no longer working on it and have no intention of doing anything else with it.

yeah, but with the new New Vegas meshes for weapons, items and bugglies, you'd think that it would be reasonable for them to create a pack to allow their use in Fallout 3 mods, and the same is true for Fallout 3 - there are some things - the deathclaw gauntlet or nuka-grenade for example - that having access to their meshs and such would allow New Vegas modders to use and bring back to the game.

All the meshes and textures are already in New Vegas.

However, game company licensing laws seem to be second only to movie studio licensing laws in complexity. In some cases it seems that licenses are extremely restrictive, pretty much exclusive really.....so if the contract doesn't specify they can use the IP in another game, they can't.

And Zenimax Media has multiple layers of companies which are separate financial entities, so contracts between them are required.

Not to mention the potential involvement of the owners of Gamebryo, Havok, Speedtree, the dialog/facial animation program and all the others that are integrated in Fallout.

Really, the rules binding Bethesda are probably more strict than the laws binding modders, which is why they can't support mods that break those rules in any way. It's not stinginess...the legal costs of doing what you want would likely be prohibitive.
