Cross Platform Gaming

Post » Tue Aug 25, 2009 9:51 pm

I am just putting the question to the floor and would like to know your opinions on cross platform gaming.

Own View : I for one believe there needs to be more competitiveness between different platforms such as the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3.

PC would decimate the inferior control system of consoles (I will be playing on Xbox) Xbox vs Ps3 will create console wars and mic spamming, no is the answer, period
Great idea in theory, unviable in reality.

Cross platform would create more issues than it is worth, along with the fact of how much money they would have to spend for something that at best is kind of cool and nowhere near game changing.

I do remember a study a game company did involving cross platforming.

This company (the name eludes me) got a couple of average, non-hardcoe gaming, gamers and pit them against some elite console FPS gamers. The battle was a slaughter, the PC decimated the console users. The company did not attempt cross platforming with PC. I could kinda see it with XBox and PS3. Let us PC users be and let us destroy each other. :flamethrower:

It's not like that hasn't been tried before, cross-platform online games have been around since 2007, if not earlier. I say 2007 because the oldest Cross-platform multiplayer game I know about is Shadowrun, which was released in 2007.

For cross platform to work, they would multiple options for playing against each other - console only servers, PC only servers, and mixed servers. This way everyone can be happy. If you just have it as free for all all the time, then things like this will happen http://www.techspot.com/news/39738-microsoft-killed-crossplatform-project-because-pc-gamers-wrecked-console-gamers.html

I would like to see it but I highly doubt it will happen. PC users consider yourself lucky.

Agreed. mouse and keyboard gives a big advantage! As nice as it would be to see one in game community for brink, i just dont think its possible.

Nice signature, also. I love the guy that said that..hes one of my favorites, although they are all cool.

I think cross platform is viable only if you add in peripheral devices for the consoles i.e. keyboard and mouse. It really is the only way to level the playing field, razor tried by making a precise console fps controller but it still feels sluggish by comparison. Try talking them into making keyboard and mice designed specifically for consoles while being wireless, affordable. Then cross platform gaming becomes an option.

But hey, the company paying the bills has let you guys pioneer other things why not this, by the way, you hiring?

making the console players use a m/kb kinda defeats the purpose....that's why I proposed the multiple server idea for games that were cross platform: console only, PC only, and mixed servers.

I Don't think the console should be limited by a controller, it should be more about the game/genre than anything else, especially with fps qualities. Ask console gamers what their number one gripes about playing an fps on a console, bet they tell you they wish they had more control. An affordable priced set by either a 3rd party company or the console manufacturers could do it, but then it'll be 59.99 and the games will suffer because no one will want to shell out that for each piece.

Again though why limit them to one control option. We have them all, they should to.

that doesn't necessarily mean that they wish they had a m/kb. A majority of players who like controllers, hate m/kb. They might want more control, but they don't want that.

And it didn't turn out well. IIRC they basically had to cripple the controls for PC players to make it fair for the ones on a console.

Uhm.. yes I would like to see some cross-platform gaming, but PC crossing the consoles would just be devastating to the console players. I would like to combine PS3 and Xbox however, because they're on an even playing field.

if it was at all possible, an xbox and ps3 cross would be great. Other than that, I only play on a console and it would ruin it if you couldn't at least be competitive. So big no to console / PC.

Its more likely to be in PC and Xbox, since they are both Microsoft.
i read they are actually working on a phone-xbox cross platform gaming and that there is also a windows project going on.
ofc it would be more fair xbox and PS3 because of the controllers.

I voted yes for 360 & PS3

EXPLICITLY not PC.

why?

No, i'm not a really devoted fan... facts are facts. Mouse + Keyboard is SUBSTANTIALLY more accurate then gamepad.

PC vs Console is an EXTREMELY unfair fight.

M$ and $ony won't allow X-Platform between each other though, so keep dreamin fellas

A few games HAVE been PC/360.... Shadowrun comes to mind.... proving my point ;)

I've always like the mouse for aiming, but I think a joystick is much better for movement.

depends on ur definition of "better"

Mouse aim is, w/o a doubt, faster and more accurate.

However, that doesn't mean it's better for actual gaming experience.

I prefer gamepads, precisely for the more difficult aiming.

It's why I FPS on console now, even though PC's are technically better

IF we ignored the difference in the level of controls involved, it would be an absolutely amazing idea. No reason you couldnt have clients accept the EXACT same packet info across all systems, and then, if output was different, just send it to a central server which would already know how to read all the information, and then spit it back out in the appropriate formats... easy enough...

Contrary that i voted yes, i say no. I'd LIKE to see it, but its just not reasonable, because PC owners would have a superior control setup and enhanced reaction+accuracy+speed, because its quicker to twitch your fingers, then it is to pull a trigger. its 0.24mm with i think less then a gram of pressure is what it takes to click the average razer mouse that uses the death adder design, and you can spin your character multiple times (accurately if practiced) in the same timeframe that a stick user would take to rotate once, and you loose alot of accuracy from large wild actions far more quickly. Keys are the same thing, the stick has to move like what, probably a centimeter at the top? keyboard, a tap is all it takes. The percentage increase in speed is exceedingly small, yeah, like maybe 1/20th a second, but advantage is advantage, and my point is PEOPLE WILL COMPLAIN.

though if people were mature about it and realized you could 100% handle the differences through player skill... it'd be awesome. Theres a good few games i wish i could have played cross platform, like phantasy star.

Though the increase in player base/games available would be nice, it wouldn't exactly be fair to the console players. Take it from someone who plays/has played both extensively- PC controls are faaaaaaaar superior to any console control setup I've ever used.
