Crossbows and/or Compound Bows

Yah what are you talking about. A bullet going past the speed of sound compared to a arrow....no.

You can cure a bullet wound, even with post apocalyptic stuff (as Doc Mitchell proves), good luck curing that hole where your lungs were.

I'm sure my 1911 and my Mosin-Nagant will handle things just fine.

I don't get it. Killing someone with a pre-heated fork, especially by making a "hole where your lungs were"? Please explain more in detail.

On the topic of Crossbows and bows, it has a huge yes from me :) Nothing like killing soldiers with firearms with "primitive" weapons. One thing about the throwing spear there, I'd like if you could choose to either fight with it or throw it, like when you click 2 for alternate ammunition for guns, instead it would be the alternate "fire mode" for the spear. I'd also like more tribals, hoho.

Here's http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/6924/hpqscan0002r.jpg. A bit silly, yes, because it would be too heavy for a man to carry, so... if it had a requirement of 10 Strength, maybe? And if it was used by super mutant, and/or as a stationary wall defense of some town that has no Browining .50 cals. Like a ballista. Haha.

The fork is too slow to go through your body as a bullet would, it would stick and stay onto your body. The firer then can pull the fork out along with the flesh now on the fork. The flesh has now been quick-cooked by the hot fork and the firer can now enjoy a nice piece of meat to go with whatever loot there is.

Just ignore it, do what everyone else does and use "real" bullets.

Nice choice of WW2 weapons especially the colt 1911.

There is a *huge* difference between black powder and modern propellants (mostly based on nitrocellulose), the modern propellants being vastly more efficient. Ever notice how ye olde muskets are .50 and .60 caliber and lob giant subsonic bricks of lead, while modern rifles shoot .20 and .30 caliber bullets at Mach 3? Yeah.

i never said that you would use the black powder for modern ammo, but with black powder, weapons can be made. it was just an example of how people just know how to build weapon stuff.

Are you trying to be offensive? While you fail, the attempt in and of itself was quite rude, please try to be more polite on this forum, please.

I object to the stereotype that "hillbillies" or "rednecks" are uneducated, does having to work hard for independent living and not being able to afford the time or resources for proper schooling put them any lower on the social scale, if you think so than how about you trade places with them, I assure you that you will realize that they don't choose to be uneducated.

High grade ammunition would be tough to make.
However, the factories would not be gone, I wonder how hard it would be to use a factory to begin production of effective rounds...?

Let's face it, guns would be built with alarming speed, between people with the know how, instructions around and people who just love to tinker that kind of knowledge wouldn't be far gone (it's not hard to reverse engineer given time).

Using black powder for ammunition would be lulzy, the bullet would practically flop out the end of the barrel to the floor...homemade black powder is extraordinarily pathetic, even with accurate quantities...

Oh, yeah. Bows & Crossbows. Sign me up. I'd love it.
Hell, I'd settle for a good sling.

I would say Bows should go to Survival or Explosives.

This way either we have Survival as sort of a swiss knife (which obviously isn't as good as specialize), or somewhat more suitable early game weapon for Explosive.

If anyone remembers the Road Warrior, you'll remember how scarce guns and ammo were in a post-apocalyptic world. Some of the characters used crossbows and compound bows in lieu of convential firearms.

I always thought that bows would be an interesting weapons' option for those players that want to experiment in something other than guns and energy weapons.

What are your thoughts on this? I'd like to see a developer's input as well.

Just a guess, but I'd imagine using a crossbow and/or compound bow would have less DP, so they'd prob require more shots to kill. Maybe that'd be a good option for hardcoe mode?.......

Hey no one mentioned an important aspect of the bow and crossbow .. They are pretty damn quite when you fire.
Which I think in fallout would be a big deal and why most wasters would carry them.. Not that everone is a super sneaky assassin heh, just in this world hunting is probably your main source of food, and theres a pretty good chance if you were poping off rounds from a rifle some low life would here it want your stuff and come looking for you.. heck to be honest the sling or the slingshot (wrist rocket type) might even have a place though maybe not the critters your hunting for chow most often are thinking the same about you heh.

i never looked at it that way... good point! but again, with the presumably lower DP, im still sticking with my "hardcoe Only" suggestion. :yucky:

I don't really consider the quietness of a bow to be a highly desirable advantage to a wasteland survivor. Rather it's:
- arrows do not destroy game meat. They're sharp, they kill by puncturing and slicing, not by pulverizing like a bullet.
- arrows can be re-used, or juryrigged out of common materials. A huge huge issue.
- bows and crossbows can be made with relatively simple materials and tools. Bow broken? Make a new one. Gun broken? Uh...

The dart gun from Fallout 3 was a crossbow. Pity there are no crafted guns in this game.

Whilst i'd rather say no to this considering the year the game is set in, and the fact that it has futurisic EW weapons,
I'd have to say why the hell not? After all, the legion do insist on using machetes and throwing spears as their most common weapons...
And lets not forget, that the best part of the other half of the game insists on making the game so heavily based around and full of LA and cowboy style weapons! so yeah... why not

If there were a slightly modern/futuristic variant made from an alloy of some sort with a plasma or laser tip, increased power from technology, That'd be cool... but a basic bow or X-bow which people can manufacture by being resourseful would have little effect on power armour... Hunting deathclaws with a compound bow would put a spin on the gameplay though :D

Whether or not guns would be rare or plentiful in the world of Fallout, Bows and Arrows make sense to me. It is one of the more effective weapons that can be made from common materials. Not sure why they are not in the game, if nothing else, they would make an accurate way to get an explosive on a ranged target.
