Crossbows and/or Compound Bows

Post » Thu Oct 01, 2009 12:42 pm

Ladies and gentlemen, wilst I can see that you all have outstanding military history knowledge, we're straying away from the point.
And whilst I love history myself and huge discussions, this is only fallout :D

At the start of the game, a basic bow or crossbow would be useful to acquire for defense against bark scorpions, bloatflys, coyotes, geckos and maybe even powder gangers, and probably equally as pants as the varmint rifle, bar the varmints seemingly ridiculous range

But, as with all weapon progressions throughout the game and technologies available, slightly futuristic and energy tipped/powered variants could be bought for fun value and nothing more. Just some added entertainment. Am i right in assuming as much? that we're not looking to replace the AMR or the YCS...

Maybe something along the lines of the Tek bow from Gears of War? for example, with a plasma tip, explosive AP bolts... and what not? Compound bows are relatively powerful nowadays, and i'm sure you all know what the longbows from the Mary Rose were capable of, now imagine the gun runners or know-it-alls from the BoS could create if they put their minds to it. They are after all stuck in that bunker with nothing to do, and did put a lot of technology into boxing gloves and sledge hammers...

You do realize that a lot of us use Fallout lore to justify why bows aren't necessary, right?

No I don't. If there is anything about the Fallout lore, it is iconic weapon should be available in game; not to mention the how the wasteland tribes are base off American Natives. So compound bow that shots explosive arrow should have its place in Fallout.

Like I posted before, bows would be a very handy early game weapon, but doesn't fall under other alternative combat skill (with Survival dependent), or as early game Explosive (as NV lacking a tier 1 launcher weapon).

Hmm, if you start out in i tribe (sorta like fallout 2) you could start off armed with a spear and bow, that makes sense

I miss the dart gun from Fallout 3. That thing was a beast.

I object to the stereotype that "hillbillies" or "rednecks" are uneducated, does having to work hard for independent living and not being able to afford the time or resources for proper schooling put them any lower on the social scale, if you think so than how about you trade places with them, I assure you that you will realize that they don't choose to be uneducated.

Actually, the majority of rednecks I've met are high-schoolers, who are willfully ignorant, belligerent, and Bible thumping to the point of just being unpleasant. A college education isn't necessary to not butcher the English language, think the Earth is 6000 years old, and dip tobacco from age 13. They act this way out by choice, thus inviting name-calling, avoidance, and negative stereotyping. I see this every day.

OT: Bows would fit right in to NV's world, in the hands of tribals and Caesar's Legion recruits. I couldn't understand why they weren't. If you can find a place for the throwing spears that I don't care about, why not just give us a damn compound-bow?

The majority of the people to jsut talked about are trailer trash, not rednecks, see I use the terms like they originally meant, not a derogatory, meaning people who work to sustain themselves and their families, living in the hills, or working all day in the sun until your neck turns permanently red, THAT is what those terms mean.

In Fallout terms: Rednecks -- Goodsprings.
Trailer Trash -- Nipton

I wonder if there's time to squeeze a bow into one of the DLCs?

If bows are introduced then they should belong to either a new skill (Hunting/Arrow Based Weaponry) or be put in Survival.

Huh? Why would you use a clumsy single shot crossbow, when you have a perfectly good 10mm pistol lying on the ground with a 12-round magazine. There is no reason to have a crossbow in the Fallout universe, guns are everywhere, and ammunition is plenty.

Which is lousy design IMO.
Why should guns and it's ammo be in such an abundance?

I'm very skeptical. It's one thing to have shotguns and pistols, but how often do you see high-tech hunting crossbows?

Because there is a war going on? Because weapons are easily bought, pretty much anyone can buy a weapon unlike real life. And lastly the small amount of industry there is produces weapons and ammo. That's why! :P

And if I remember correctly the OP was talking about NV :P If there are any tribal villages (not burned out lol) in a DLC or fallout 4 I would happily see bows :)

Kelleher repeatedly referred to the 19,000 rounds of ammunition confiscated from Joos' home

I live in texas

http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storeproduct805.aspx

here you have people who stack out extra 1000 round cases on the sales floor at the start of Huricain season

http://www.impactguns.com/store/bulk_ammo.html

Granted you would have to wonder just how long thoes cases would last.

Given that theres actualy more guns than humans in Texas.

and thoes guns are hungry.*

and Gunstores are bloody EVERYWHERE around here.

Sorry, still had FO3's area in mind from back in 09 when discussing arrow based weaponry.
But yeah in NV it wouldn't make much sense for bows and crossbows to be used.
On the other hand, if we go to an area that is more tribal then I would like to see them.
And though it's somewhat offtopic: FO3 should have had more bows than guns IMO for being the hell hole it is with no production going on.

There were pre-House/pre-NCR but then they cleaned the place up I guess.
Too bad though, was hoping to find one hidden away somewhere struggling to survive. :(

The Great Khans are sort of a tribal village, though I guess they're classified as raiders.
