Crossbows one handed and two handed

Post » Sat Aug 14, 2010 12:25 pm

I want Skyrim to include one-handed and two-handed crossbows. Chinese crossbows are low damage, high rate of fire and magazine fed. it's really a two-handed weapon but i don't think i'd have a problem if bethesda let me dual wield them. i know chinese crossbows are inaccurate, but i thought an ancient lever action crossbow is worth mentioning. If i mention only some of the characteristics of a weapons it's because those are the characteristics relevant to ELDER SCROLLS the game this forum is dedicated too. I know one handed crossbows are not realistic or practical. I also think a two handed crossbows would be usefull for sniping from afar. medieval crossbows had a range of 350-400 yards, but you could only fire 2 bolts per minute. these crossbows were made to take down armored knights.

Pros: more damage, penetrates armor,

Cons: longer reloads, heavier than bows

One handed pro: higher rate of fire, can be used in combination with another weapon
One handed con:: less damage, shorter range, even longer reloads, less armor penetration, no blocking maybe?

If you think this is a good idea talk to other people about it please.

If your tired of bethseda reducing weaponry and skills in exchange for "finishing moves" and "dragon shouts" let them know with an email

They have enough emails, no need to spam them with crossbow requests. They already know we want em'

This.

Leave Bethesda alone. Something as simple as "WE WANT CROSSBOWS" is not worth wasting their time with. They've already taken into consideration whether or not they're going to add crossbows and a bunch of email harassment isn't going to change that at this point. Minor things like various weapons have probably already been taken into consideration and are not unique ideas that the developers have not already thought of themselves.

I think an e-mail is a waste of time (and annoying to anyone having to sift through it) but it's certainly worth posting about. Obviously, whether they are in the game or not hasn't been confirmed yet, but if they've made the decision not to include them, I think it's important that people disagree.

Anyways. The thing with crossbows isn't always power, but accuracy. Since you're not holding the tension of the bow string yourself and since the bolt is rested on a flat surface, it's easier to hit targets than with a traditional bow. Now, the most powerful crossbow IS probably more powerful than the most powerful bow, because humans just can compete with mechanics.

But, I think any one-handed crossbows would actually be quicker to load, and could be held off hand with a sword. Basically it's a one hand operation to [censored] the string into the lock. Obviously, the range and power is incredibly diminished. Good for poison or supernatural creatures if you use silver bolts and enchantments, but almost useless against people in armor.

Also, repeating crossbows like the Chinese had. Two hands, extremely low power, about 6-10 shots. Also best used when combined with poison.

I agree that crossbows would be more accurate, but how would you make a weapon more accurate in a game like elder scrolls? Morrowind did have "roll of the dice" combat. Some weapons had a higher hit chance than others. But Bethesda got rid of that in Oblivion and it's unlikely they will bring it back.

It is true that smaller, lighter crossbows will be reloaded faster than larger crossbows. this is only true when your using both hands. if your using a one handed crossbow and you have a sword in the other hand, your reload speed should decreased (penalty) even if you still reload faster than a two handed crossbow... your the expert

wow in never thought of including repeating crossbows. (this may be true, I'm not entirely certain, please confirm/ disprove) too bad they removed attributes/ reduced how much you can alter them because high agilty would be ideal for reloading the repeating crossbow

Why do you have to do anything? Just sit and wait. They already know that some players want crossbows. If they want to include it, they will. If they don't want to include it, then nothing you say or do is going to change their minds. You don't have to do anything though, it's already taken care of.

Indifferent towards crossbows, but considering that we know Skyrim will have Centurions, I'm assuming that their ranged variants will fire on us with a crossbow-esque attack. It'd just be silly to see a mechanical construct pulling on a bowstring. So assuming that a crossbow sort of firing mechanic is in for the AI, who knows?

Yea, the only way to include "higher" accuracy is with dice roll, or damage (less accurate shots would hit leg or armor) or having a reticle that shrinks as skill progresses.

And yes, there would be a penalty for loading a one handed crossbow while holding another weapon. I'm not convinced on even suggesting they be included (they are definitely more fantastical) but it's just another idea.

However, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Repeating_crossbow

thanks for that link i had no idea chinese crossbows could be shot and reloaded with one hand. that would definetly be worth including in the game.

I'd like to see a little wrist-mounted crossbow with very low damage and short range, but doubles the effect of poison.

uh, I way too much disagree. the weapon content is one of the top 3 most important aspects of the game. Oblivions weapon selection was beyond lame, they cut something like 2 thirds of what was in the previous title, there was no excuse for that. I think more people should be harassing the Devs so that they know that they can't get away with creating a bland weapon system that limited they way people played.

I love crossbows, and throwing weapons, it was astonishingly lame when I found out that the ONLY marksman weapon was bows.

Then that's a completely different issue altogether. If you want to say "Hey, a big part of the games for me is a bunch of different weapons and there should be a larger variety" then that's fine, but saying "WE WANT CROSSBOWS WE WANT CROSSBOWS" is not helping anyone. In one of the Todd Howard interviews, he even says that most players will mention they want spears and more races and things like that but that is not the kind of suggestions that are helpful. The developers are not stupid. They are able to come up with such simple ideas as spears and crossbows on their own. If the players were to enforce the idea of wanting a large variety of weapons, then that's a completely separate issue than just wanting one specific weapon as though it's going to change the entire gameplay experience.

Excuse you. I'm not trolling your topic. I know what it's like to have tons of people constantly requesting the same thing over and over again. It won't make the developers more aware of how much people want certain things. TONS of people want more races but they aren't going to add them because they'd rather do more with 10 races because 10 races is enough. You can't please everyone because not everyone knows what is best for the overall product. It's proof enough that at least half of the quest mods I've seen are Oblivion are awful messes that aren't fun to play at all. The average player does not know what's best for the series, so it doesn't matter how many emails you send, it's not going to make them change their minds.

with oblivion I was simply disapointed with (obviously the lack of any variety for ranged weapons, *bows made of different material is not variety* ) but the fact that it was over balanced, by that I mean that they had something like ten weapon materials; iron to daedric, and each one was more powerful than the next. thats fine for a rpg if you are just playing through to beat the game and put it down. but I personally did not like that the best weapon was daedric, which to me looked ugly. I don't think its too much to ask for to have weapons, of the higher up tier, to have two or more swords that were = in strength but looked different. they did do that for the lower teir weapons; iron + fine iron, steel + fine steel.

it just feels so un emmersing when your weapon skill is, lets say blades, and your two choices is to use the best sword to be at your best, or using a sword looks good to you but is likely much weaker and puts you at a disadvantage. so basicly, they should have a couple of (non unique) weapons for each type at the top teir with varying style.

Then you don't disagree with me at all. I totally agree with that idea and it would be great to have a variety of weapons and armor that serve different varieties of play styles and none are necessarily better than the others. So make it known that you want variety, not that you just want crossbows. Saying "I want crossbows" isn't constructive and isn't something to work with, after hearing it for the thousandth time it just becomes "blah blah blah" but "I want variety" IS constructive and is something that would help inspire the developers.

And again, I'm not saying don't have a topic about it, I'm saying don't tell everyone to email Bethesda. They already know people want crossbows and more emails is not going to do anything except waste their time and yours. The inclusion of crossbows is not going to be a big deal once the game is actually out, and if crossbows not being in is a deal breaker for you, then chances are your opinion on how the game should be isn't very valuable to begin with.

Chinese crossbows are magazine fed one handed crossbows that can be fired and reloaded with one hand (not including reloading another magazine).

Of course it's also worth nothing that repeating crossbows are about as accurate as a broken shotgun with no choke being fired randomly by a drunken blind person. They weren't typically used for accurate fire (which they were pretty much incapable of), but for raining random damage down on large armies approaching in formation. Their utlitity against a single opponenet would be pretty close to zero.

what I disagreed about was the validity of the people who voice what they want in a game. it may be true what you say about people tending to ignore the complaints or demands they get in huge numbers, but it should not be that way. Obviously, if a massive amount of people who plan to buy your product email you (or what ever) about changes they want made, you should consider making that change. if the changes are too hard (not necessarily expensive) then find away to make it work. I get so sick of developer's trend (not just gamesas) of not making improvements and merely citeing the comments of others who obviosly don't care about the product as much, so that they can cut expenses and maximize their profit.

ok how are "dragon shouts" and "finishing moves" good for elder scrolls? [censored] no fable 3 shows how empty and brain dead finishing moves are. elder scrolls is about creating the warior you want. Its not about learning mandatory dragon [censored]. They already said they made Skyrim bigger than Oblivion, but whats the point if you pick up the same weapons everywhere you go. I agree that story and interesting side quests are the most important feature of a rpg. We shouldn't tell bethesda how to write a good story/ quest. Thats alot more annoying than asking for weapons back they had in other games. But i can't just sit on my hands and wait untill 11/11/11. i don't believe bethesda released a trailer year before the game comes out and wants everyone to shut the [censored] up

That's the thing, they've already considered including crossbows. It's right up there with Spears as such a popular request. So at this point the player should realize that it is unnecessary to continuously email Bethesda with requests for crossbows because it's not doing anyone any good at this point.

Have you played the game? Do you know how dragon shouts and finishing moves affect gameplay? No, you have absolutely no idea. Dragon Shouts sound awesome to me and sound like they could give whole new dimensions to the gameplay. Finishing moves I'm not so sure about, but as with everything in TES, I'm sure they'll put an interesting take on it. If nothing else, it's worth a try.

My point is, your suggestion is already very well voiced, you don't need to worry about it. LITERALLY hundreds if not thousands of other people have already voiced your opinion about crossbows for you and it is redundant to continuously flood their emails with more crossbow requests.
