Crossbows, Spears, and Halberds...Oh My!

Post » Sat May 29, 2010 10:33 am

This has probably already been mentioned and/or confirmed, but my search button keeps timing out my internet. (This is the only reason why I'm making a new thread instead of posting in an existing one). Will crossbows, spears, and/or halberds be making a return in Skyrim? Has a list of the various weapon types been posted for Skyrim yet? If so, I would very much like a link to said list.

Spears, halberds and other polearms - no. These were confirmed in a GI interview as not being featured, (although anything can change between now and release.) Not sure about crossbows. Personally, i'm not fussed about all three. As long as there's a larger variety of swords and bows than there was in Oblivion, i'm happy.

Crossbows, probably not. Nothing confirmed.

Spears, not in the traditional sense..

Which means halberds is a possibility. Not confirmed though, but judging from both screen shots and what they said about spears, it's very plausible.

Edit: Sheagorath is wrong, they have said spears are in, but not in the traditional sense.

@shegorath88 Really? No spears OR halberds? What a shame...

Yea really nothing confirmed yet as far as those weapons go, but I would like it if they did include some of your ideas, particularly a halberd and crossbow.

I did never really care about spears. Halberds would be cool for the guards, I think. I will be quite sad if there aren't any crossbows, though.

Well the GI interview was months ago... so they might've changed their mind after fan feedback. Do you have a source?

I wonder what Bethesda could possibly mean by "spears are in, but not in the traditional sense". How can you implement pole-arms differently?

Like a million interviews and podcasts?

Spears in not-traditional sense could mean pole-arms, but not as spears. Or it could mean something else, we'll have to wait and see what further they say about it.

All I'm saying is that the statement spears and pole-arms not being in the game is wrong, they have pointed out that they are most likely in the game in some form.

I would actually be let down (and I know my friend would too) if pole-arms could only be used while mounted. I miss the days of Morrowind were you could make a character who specializes in the use of pole-arms. I mean... Skyrim has staves (a type of pole-arm) for mages, why can't it have spears and halberds for fighters.

It's not "wrong" as it was stated by Todd Howard quite clearly in a podcast interview. If anything, it's just outdated.

To quote: "There are not spears in the classic spears sense" ie. no spears.

i think polearms are in because those screenshots with draugr yo ucan clearly see one of thme having a twohanded axe and other one holding a weapon in a much wider grip and that weapon more or less looks like a bardiche or is it just me?

It has staves... but they atack casting a spell, not hitting the enemy. So it doens't have much to do with spears or halberd.

Anyway, if you ask me about spears and all of that, I would say that we will have pole-arms, practicaly for sure, but not spears.

I think, "not in the traditional sense" means not as a skill, but probably as a two handed weapon in the blades skill category, like Axe was for blunt.

There is no Blade skill, or Blunt. They have changed to 1-handed and 2-handed skills.

But if Skyrim's staves are like those of Oblivion, then really they are just over sized wands. I would like to see a much wider range of weapons, however, I would prefer them to do a handfull of weapons well, as opposed to a range of weapons badly.

EDIT: And since it has been confirmed (I believe) that you can weild two staves at once, I'm thinking that they will be identical to Oblivions

It certainly looks like a bardiche, although it could just simply be a war axe of some kind.

Like others have said though, "spears but not in the traditional sense". Could be halberds, other polearms, or nothing. We probably won't know until closer to release.

crossbows and spears are a no go bud. They said crossbows and throwing items are out and that spears (in the conventional sense) are out. Wait for the mods I guess.

That looks like a regular axe to me.
Halberds are longer with a spear-like tip -

It's not a bardiche or glaive either, those would have a blade that reaches above the shaft, in the pic the blade comes downward from roughly even with the end of the shaft.

Here's a decent pic of the most standard polearms for comparison -

I'm actually pretty pleased with the way that axe looks though, much more realistic in it's proportions and size than previous games, but still cool looking

It's not a halberd, it is a two handed axe. It would have to be much much longer to be considered a halberd, plus you mentioned the spear at the tip. You are correct sir.

Modders had 5 years to add them in Oblivion. Only crossbows were added I think, but I think it was just based on some other animations if I'm not entirely wrong.
If you wanna wait for mods again for Skyrim to do this, it's going to be a long, long, long wait that probably will never end.
