CROSSBOWS!

Post » Tue Jul 12, 2011 5:54 pm

Um, i think you have that a little backwards. Bows were the lighter, faster, and farther reaching weapon, crossbows were stronger and slower because you couldn't hand draw the crossbow because it was too strong. i think.

Not entirely true. Depends on the crossbow. The lighter ones were certainly possible to draw by hand. Heavier ones would require windlasses or other devices to be drawn though. More info can be found here. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossbow

Crossbows aren't very practical at all, not for an person running and traveling everywhere. If they are in game i personally wont be using them as i see there not really useful and they kind of don't suit the setting i have for "my" Skyrim.

I believe it was confirmed crossbows won't be in.

Also, I don't think that crossbows should be in Skyrim. I can't really see how someone would want to use a bow really if crossbows were in but that's probably just me. I'm just not a fan of crossbows, sorry to say. Throwing knives might be interesting, though, but I believe that was confirmed not to be in either.

bethesda should reconsider not putting them in the game dwemer ruins are in skyrim and the dwemer invented the crossbow so it would only make sense for crossbows to be in the game.

Some people want special bows that take too long to load and need special arrows called bolts. M'aiq thinks they are idiots.

I really dont see why people wouldnt want crossbows or at least why they would be against them. They fit well into the universe and give us a few more options and cool weapons to collect. I honestly doubt it would have been hard to implement and it is a shame they arent in

Should there be crossbows? Yes.

Are they confirmed? No.

Will they be confirmed? Possibly, but I think its leaning more towards the no side.

A basilisk is a mythological reptile. Your thinking of a ballista.

why would anyone ever be apposed to a new weapon?

Because it may be game breaking, or not fit into lore, like gunpowder weapons.

Not saying this applies to crossbows though. Just why someone would be opposed.

Should there be crossbows? There certainly should be an improvement on the current ranged weapon situation, because the projectile weapons in Oblivion were pathetic. No horizontal or vertical variety. In Skyrim at least we are looking at getting vertical variety (i.e. some bows do more damage but are heavier/slower etc.)

Should there specifically be crossbows to add that horizontal variety? That's debatable.

Should there be more horizontal variety? Yes, and that's not debatable.

Are there going to be crossbows?

As many have already said, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gvdf5n-zI14

I think that skyrim is gonna be a great game but leaving crossbows out was a terrible TERRIBLE call by Todd

Nope, none of'em fit the "sixiest ranged weapon" for me. Not by a mile.

http://www.pookiesarchery.com/Images/products/Archery/pse/Tac15a.jpg

Not that it would fit in Skyrim, but there won't be any crossbows there until the modders add them so...

OMG, how many times must I explain this. Crossbows were horrible. They had horrible range and took forever to load. The only advantage and reason that people used them was because any idiot can figure out how to aim and turn the crank. Just look at any war that used crossbows verses regular bows.

You must explain that many times as most people are ignoring you because you are wrong.

A crossbow can be loaded long before the bowman might need to shoot. In this way, the bowman would be able to shoot immediately if surprised. Crossbows require less upper body strength to operate as well

The crossbow was really the first hand-held weapon that could be used by an untrained soldier to injure or kill a knight in plate armour

Historical evidence would indicate that in the hands of a well-trained longbowmen, distances of 250-350 yards were commonly attained. A few modern archers have regularly achieved distances of 350-450 yards with reproduction longbows. Inigo Simot loosed an arrow 462 yards 9 inches in 1914, and there is a claim of someone loosing an arrow 482 yards with a longbow.

At the time of the battle of Crecy (1346 C.E.), the English longbow almost certainly had a greater range than the crossbow used in field combat. Throughout the Medieval Period though, crossbows became more powerful. Sir Ralph Payne-Gallwey loosed a bolt from an actual Medieval crossbow spanned with a cranequin and achieve a cast of 490 yards. The ordinary 15th. century crossbow would likely cast a bolt 370-380 yards. These crossbows would surely outperform almost any longbow in terms of distance, but the accuracy of the crossbow at those ranges would likely be poor at best.

From the replies in this thread it sounds like it has already been answered. If it's true, then I find it unfortunate. Makes more sense to have them in the game than not, and I'd personally prefer to see them.

It makes more sense to have alot of things in the game than not (such as morrowind or oblivion style armor and clothes, spears, crossbows, horse combat, everything else that the majority of forum members have asked for ect.) But bethesda lives to step all over other people's hopes and dreams for the stuff they want in the game :flamethrower: lol jk. Honestly I don't know what's going through Todd's mind and the minds of the other dev's, I can only assume that in their persuit of a more modern simplified TES game they've either decided that the stuff forum members like is too complicated for new players to figure out (what a load of crap that would be), that it isn't important, or that we'll be happy with the simplified end result no matter what. I personally won't be happy with some of the things in vanilla Skyrim, hence why I bought a new computer and am now getting it on PC instead of my Xbox. Mods will solve my issues even if the people stuck with unmoddable console versions don't have the ability to do that :sadvaultboy: Bethesda really needs to get on that whole console modding thing. Or just give the people what they want in the first place (within reason).

Should be possible to mod the strongest bow in Skyrim to be a crossbow (perhaps ignoring the different ammo ).
