Crysis 3 and Hyperthreading

Post » Fri Mar 01, 2013 4:15 am

I was wondering whether Crysis 3 take advantage of Hyperthreaded CPUs, so I did some benchmarks. My CPU is an i3-2100, 2C/4T at 3.1GHz. The GPU is a 560ti, running a 1440x900 screen. Each benchmark was 60 seconds long in the same section in singleplayer. MP was trickier, so the results are not as significant, but should still give a good idea. The GPU was not a factor in any of those benches, at such a low resolution, it sits quite comfortably at 30-70% usage on high, whereas the CPU was always pegged at 100%.

Now to my results: (format is "Section/map: min, max, avg")

HT off:

Low settings:
- Red Star Rising (SP): 16, 69, 43
- Hydro Dam (SP): 21, 78, 52
- Museum (MP): 16, 39, 25
- Central Cavern (MP): 17, 77, 50

High settings:
- Red Star Rising (SP): 10, 60, 25
- Hydro Dam (SP): 20, 60, 38
- Museum (MP): didn't test (not playable)
- Central Cavern (MP): didn't test (not playable)

HT on:

Low settings:
- Red Star Rising (SP): 31, 98, 72
- Hydro Dam (SP): 54, 110, 88
- Museum (MP): 28, 70, 52
- Central Cavern (MP): 51, 97, 72

High settings:
- Red Star Rising (SP): 26, 67, 43
- Hydro Dam (SP): 25, 77, 50
- Museum (MP): didn't test
- Central Cavern (MP): didn't test

So, it is quite clear that HT does indeed make a difference on Dual Cores that have the functionality. Of course, I cannot say wether C3 benefits from more than 4 threads - someone with an i7 would have to conduct those tests. The biggest difference is the minimum fps - the gameplay was significantly smoother and less jittery. I have uploaded an archive with the original fraps bench .csv's and some screenshots of settings and CPU-Z.

You can contribute if you have anything to say about HT.

My i5-3210m has HT. Yay. Though, it doesn't mean anything when my GPU is the limiting factor :/

There are benchmarks floating around stating that HT helps :) Although if I recall this was a beta benchmark graph.

Yep, i7 950 here and big gains. There's a chart going around at the moment that says HT does not work in C3, just ignore it.

It's a shame my CPU doesn't support HT. Though my FPS isn't bad at all in MP, just in SP. Upgrade plans this year!
