Crysis 2 Crashing for no good reason (Color pixelated crash)

Post » Wed Jun 01, 2011 9:26 pm

When i'm in the middle of playing Crysis 2 the game will freeze up (i won't be able to shoot and stuff) and then the screen freezes and the frame becomes all grainy/pixelated and colorful (almost like an inverted photo lol). I would take a screenshot if my computer didn't freak out and shut off when this happens. I'm using the GTX 570, latest driver (updated yesterday). Is this a video card problem, or something that's happening to other people because of the game itself? :)Thanks (btw my video card isn't heating up or anything, my card can handle this at max settings) it just happens randomly)
ps: I'm using a custom config plus Nhancer anti aliasing..........but this happened once before i used any of those settings (in the water at opening scene) .

it sounds like a video card problem either its overheating or its damaged or perhaps a driver problem.

is the card new?

Only a few weeks old, and the card never reaches over 80c on Crysis 2, so it's not anything like that. The only thing i can think of is maybe a driver issue?

Yes evil is correct, your card is damaged. This is not just a driver problem, but the card itself is breaking. How am I so certain? Because i've seen this several times before over the years. Once with my old GTX 280 in fact, due to the problem that my PSU was not properly sending voltage to the card and had a rail-linking issue (I essentially **** up the card by hooking it up wrong because I crossed two slightly different voltage rails in the pair because the owners manual of the PSU was a lying sack of crap and I found this out later). What happend is 100% what you describe and the card eventually no longer worked. I had to send it back to EVGA for warranty, which they honored, and got a new one. I also proceeded to buy a new corsair PSU that specifically noted how I can hook up such cards in that way. Well you live and learn, since I had warranty on the card it only cost me the money to ship it back to get a new one plus the cost of a new PSU (which I proceeded to toss the other one as it was now broken).

I've also seen this many times prior to that with friends, other pcs, and so forth. All were due to improper voltage/wattage/amperage/omhs in power feed or incorrectly installed into the PC. I've never actually seen that occur with just driver issues themselves, that would be a mere blue-screen or a more typical style crash. Color pixelage is perhaps the very worst of video card issues, it in fact does mean it is physically damaged.

Side note: These cards never overheated either so that was not the case. It can break without being overheated if you take note of my experiences. How is your card hooked up? What's your PSU? Do you have linked rails in your PSU or each wire have it's own, seperate, balanced rails like my new one does? (You have to have one like that to not **** up these kinds of cards and yes it can be confusing)

Sorry to break it to you but that's the way it is. Been there, done that, hope you have warranty.

Yeah it probably is too late. I had a friend have the same thing with his GTX 285 not but six months after mine because he had a similar PSU that I had when mine broke. His issue was slightly different than mine, he would get blue screens that would then get pixelated text and color bands across the screen. You would literally see the blue screen text jump around the screen like Mexican Jumping beans. Strange stuff.

He ended up butying a GTX 470 because he messed up his warranty return along with buying a new PSU like my new one. Neither of us have had any issues since.

Good thing you have warranty, that will make this experience a lot less painful. Contact the company and tell them of your problem. Also check out your PSU, you might want to get a new one as it could either be damaged or improper to run your card. **** svcks but a new PSU is still a lot cheaper than a new video card without warranty. I recommend Corsair PSU's, they're some of the best i've used.

OK. Thanks for all the info! :P I'll try hooking it up properly. (it's weird because this only happens in Cryis, not in any other game....) hmmm I'm not saying your wrong, but i hope so! hahaha because i payed so much for this card.

Well I hope it's not as I say. Try making sure it's connected properly first. Read up about your PSU and look at drivers first. I also never had that issue outside of a single game at first either. Same with my buddy awhile back, hell I remember him say 'it's just the game, it's a piece of ****, i'll just not play that game' then a month later it started happening to other software then eventually he couldn't even load videos on web pages before boom.

Best of luck

Well you seem to know what you're talking about from experience, i'll do my best to reinstall drivers and to hook up the card properly, i'll let you know if anything works hehe.

Ok...i just got way worse. It kept happening so i tryed a different game (assassins creed brotherhood) and i happened in one minute, and this time my screen went black, and the fan on the vidoe card sped up crazy fast.....and it's wierd, it's the same noise my older video card made when i forgot to plug the psu into it, and only had it plugged into the motherboard. Is it possibly a PSU Issue? I have a 600w cooler master extreme...it's a little above what's minimum for the card BUT i'm not sure if the 12V is enough? I have double railes each 18A. And i'm not sure if that's enough for the card?

It is not your card. It is Crysis 2 "The unplayable game". Same problem on my system: I7 920, P6T Deluxe Vr.2, 6 GB ram and 2 BFG 285 OC. Just hope it doesn't destroy you card.
