Crysis 2 Leak Fails To Result in Massive Downloads

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 11:53 am

Next month the long-awaited Crysis 2 is due for release but perhaps inevitably it’s already been leaked onto the Internet. Although it’s a PC beta version which requires some coaxing to perform, publisher EA has already decried this unofficial release and some gaming blogs have gone into overdrive condemning ‘evil pirates’. But hey, let’s all cool down for a second. Just because people can pirate, doesn’t mean they always do.

...

Despite the beta being widely available, TorrentFreak stats show (completed) downloads of just 10,000 on public BitTorrent trackers. And that’s not because this title isn’t popular with gamers. Indeed, given the current mood, it’s not unthinkable that these low download numbers may well be a result of it being quite the opposite.
While some people are clearly happy to get an advance copy, it’s eye opening to see people on torrent sites encouraging others NOT to download it. Sure, there is the usual crowd throwing a middle finger up to the publishers while delighting in their juicy booty, but so many others are pleading with people to support Crytek by putting their hands in their pockets next month instead.

10.000 downloads doesnt mean 10.000 people pirated it. People download, test, they like it, THEY BUY IT!

I wouldnt call these "pirates" "evil pirates". I am sure many of them were curious and just wanted to see what's up.
Plus Crytek has nothing to lose, in fact they got some free publicity which is good for sales. If Crytek were to release the demo already, this problem would be over.

Even though the beta is just a few mouseclicks away i am also refusing to get it and wait until i can buy the full version.
I sure hope EA and Crytek dont see the 10k downloads as a "disapointment".

Some comparison in the traffic it generated:
Crysis 2 Beta: 10k
BlackOps: 4270k
BadCompany2: 3960k
Even though those were completed games and counts from a few months after release it shows something...

It shows that the pc community is actually paying respect to crytek, and i hope EA/Crytek pick up on this.
And i sure hope they dont just bully the pc community into having inferior versions of the game or delayed releases.

Though im wondering 2 things:

1. When is the PC demo going to arrive?
2. When will Steam be able to take up pre-orders?

You're forgetting something big here, not many people have rigs that can handle Crysis 2. Trust me, this would be mass pirated if people were able to run it.

It really is amazing and nice to see how some people are trying to warn the others not to download the game and show some support for Crytek. I think Crytek sees this gesture and acknowledges it. Let's just hope that no other unplanned events and problems will occur, because we all want the Demo ASAP! :c

It's really interesting, but you must remember that the stats of 4m+ downloads of black ops was hugely flawed though, since they recount several sites (the number of seeders + leechers on black ops was about 3 times more than crysis 2 at most, so given a 2 month timeframe it'd end up around 200k downloads). This time it looks like they're just counting each tracker once.

Still its sad there are people like Logan9773 (or whatever it is) around who think they are entitled to anything from Crytek. Maybe when he gets a job he will understand how the world works.

They are forgetting the file sharing sites like rapidshare and megaupload.
The leak was available on these hours before the torrents were, so you can bet the numbers should be doubled if not tripled.

This could be just as much a bad sign though, people losing interest already.

Well the majority of people who pirated (judging from the comments at least) downloaded it to benchmark their current rig and see if they would need an upgrade..

Why should anybody download the leak?

It is unfinished and it also seems to be a slightly better console version on the pc... ive seen a tech anolysis of the leak somewhere on youtube.
The textures are very low res.. there are only very few particle effects... on some Pc`s it causes even that the SPU`s get cooking.
So it could also damage your hardware. But really this leak seems to be one of the versions created to make good screenshots for the xbox 360 marketing campaign or somewhat...because it has been stated that the texturequality of crysis 2 Pc will surpass the Very high Crysis 1 settings.

Ehm, if you have a 3-4 year old computer you can definatly run it. They wont make the mistake of making a game that no one can play like last time. The have increased effiecency alot since Crysis 1, so if you could run the first, you can run the 2nd. Ofcourse if you want Very High settings, you need a better Pc. But ive seen what it looks like on medium and it is stunning

@ Jimmyboy83

I would go one step beyond and say if you could run Crysis 1 very with 25 -30 FPs you should be able to run Crysis 2 very high with even 2-3 FPS more. But only if some "very high" settings do not depend on Dx11 exclusive features of course.

this might sadly mirror the overall sales when retail is here for the pc. if this was an early cracked new cod game before release...that would get downloaded masses - reflecting the sales also. this game series just doesn't have mass popularity that others have.

I think the reason why so few have downloaded it, is because not many people know about the game. There is barely no advertising for the game so only the true fans of the sequel will download it. I′m sure a few weeks before release we will see some commercials on tv about the game.

Attica, a torrent site released the info. They'll know how much each tracker has shared and that's a very accurate way of gauging torrents. There'll be some direct download users but most pirates are cheap, so they won't pay for anything :P
