Crytek: 'Crysis On Console Looks Better Than PC Version'

Nick Jones

Crytek's Cevat Yerli talks about making Crysis for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Published on Sep 29, 2011

Gamers have waited for years to play landmark PC shooter Crysis on console. Next week they will get their chance when it's released on Xbox 360 and PS3.

We've been speaking to Crytek's Cevat Yerli about converting the famously power-hungry FPS to consoles.

We asked Yerli if the finished product on consoles ran at the specs he would like. He told us, "Yeah, it runs at the same fidelity as Crysis 2, but the frame rate is a solid 25-30, it’s not a 60fps game. It feels very fluid on consoles, and we’ve also made an effort in remastering the content for consoles."

Yerli added, "What I mean by that is we’ve given it a whole new lighting path, quite a few new special effects, we’ve added the Nanosuit 2 controls, and all of this has added to, as well as improved the experience."

But how does it compare to the PC version of Crysis?

"I want to be clear: when I say the console versions look better than Crysis on PC, I mean that as a factual thing, not in terms of technical specifications."

Crysis will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360 on 4 October for £15.99 and 1600MSP respectively.

Its interesting that it was mentioned that the textures had to be scaled down and much other things had to be tweaked,,, and the result is better than a version that doesnt make this compromises? Thats weird.

Also all the screenshots ive seen so far (including all the new ones from Crytom too) just dont prove Cevat right.
It looks different because of the lighting but the low resolution and the so called optimisations are nothing but tweaks to fit it to low end hardware...

for me Cevat Yerli crossed the line between PR statements and perky lying.

Have to agree. The Crysis console screens look nowhere near as good as the PC version. Can't put my finger on exactly why, looks like there's no colour grading. Over the last year or so I've learned to treat any Crytek statement with skepticism.

I have a lot of time for Crytek, I enjoyed Far Cry and Crysis on PC, I absolutely loved Crysis 2 on 360 and for me it's still the best game I played this year, and I played Uncharted 2 for the first time this year. I am highly anticipating Crysis on tuesday and will be buying day 1.

However someone at Crytek, and given he is CEO God knows who, needs to put a kerb on his car crash mouth.

There were the statements about Crysis 2 being absolutely locked at 30fps on consoles and the absolutely laughable, best and most advanced AI ever, not to mention his comments at GDC that Crysis 2 failed because of 2, count 'em, 2 bugs. Which game did he play???

The only sensible thing the guy has ever said is they need to communicate better with their fans, yeah no sh1t.

Bless him.

"...not in terms of technical specifications."

Thats an interesting line i think. So Crysis 1 on PC is technically better but doesnt look better. ???
Its interesting how rash Mr Yerli is givin his statements. First the Crysis 2 DX9 @ release stuff and now this.
I think thats just exaggerated promobabble to improve the sells for this port.
And by the way 25-30 Fps? Thats a joke!

And by the way 25-30 Fps? Thats a joke!

Why is that a joke? Many console games run at 25-30 Fps. BF3 is going to be 25-30 Fps for example. That's the trade off devs must make to ensure the console versions of games look good, but play good as well.

Were you actually expecting 60 Fps for Crysis on console? Now that's a joke. Crysis isn't COD.

Its a joke to call 25-30 FPS very fluid on consoles.

right, cry tom himsef said the ultimate Crysis experience is on PC and that the whole "lnooks better on consoles" comment was preceded by a "sometimes".

I still am a console player,I still (and alnways will) give HUGE props to Crytek for this achievement....but come on, be honest, you know crysis 1 will always look better whencompletely maxed out on a pc

I can live with 30 fps, as long as it f%#king stays there and doesnt drop to 15 when something actually happens on screen

Here's somewhere that mentions it:

http://www.nowgamer.com/news/1073013/crytek_crysis_on_console_looks_better_than_pc_version.html

I looked at some comparison videos/screenshots.

Not sure why CryTek said it looks better on consoles. PC still has far better (and way more consistent) lighting, everything looks much sharper, there is more visible detail in the distance, and way more foliage and much higher draw distance. Shadows are also much cleaner looking. The water also still looks miles better, as well. Anyone noticed they haven't really showed off the water much in the console trailers? Console version has way too much contrast between trees/ground/sky/everything. It may have new lighting, and indeed it does look great on consoles, but PC version still looks the best.

I understand what he meant. We all know that Crysis PC has higher resolution textures, shadows, more detailed objetct and polly count, but these details are more noticeable when you looking closely. In the other hand, it looks like the console version has better environment lighting and vivd colors. So, from the artistic point of view, it should looks better. There is much more important thing to make a game looks pretty than high rez stuff that you can only notice when very close.

Crysis running on consoles is a big technical achievement. Kudos to Crytek.
It will of course not look better than the PC version, but for someone who hasn't experienced the first Crysis on PC (that's me) this is looking amazing for consoles. I can't wait to play.

A question to the PC gamers: What does the console version look like (low, medium, high, ultra etc.)?

right there boulder

Also, given the vanilla comparison videos especially the still screenshots and so on it looks like Crysis on consoles is running close to high setting (minus the resolution of course and some positioning)

it is a great achievement

i dont know but time will tell, but i think the console version will look better because it runs on cryengine 3 which is a more powerful engine.

@ crysisfan2000

Where did you get that from?
What ive heard so far its 720P (maybe even upscaled) and locked @ 30 Fps. (but goes down to 25 sometimes)

@ dobasameen
I would be carefull with statements like that. The modcommunity created a visual quality with the Cryengine 2 which hasnt been surpassed by anything the Cryengine 3 has brought up yet. So i think its not "more powerfull" but its not as wasteful with the ressources .

upscaled it will upscale to 1080 like all 360 games but it will be 720 native with all probability

For me i like the Cryengine 2 lighting better (but its way more hardware-hungry)

or some screens:
http://www.google.de/imgres?imgurl=http://www.pcgameshardware.com/screenshots/original/2008/07/7o8xumum.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,653412/Crysis-Mster-Config-v301-released/Imagegallery/%26article_id%3D653412%26image_id%3D864008%26show%3Doriginal&usg=__aCacL6y-mlBuh3MUjT3W0Vranf8=&h=1200&w=1920&sz=869&hl=de&start=24&zoom=1&tbnid=LNOPjNHO96qEOM:&tbnh=161&tbnw=225&ei=OdWITr-BIIrDtAaG2ozhAQ&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dmsterconfig%26hl%3Dde%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26hs%3Dil9%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:de:official%26biw%3D1680%26bih%3D926%26tbm%3Disch%26prmd%3Dimvns&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=674&page=2&ndsp=25&ved=1t:429,r:6,s:24&tx=59&ty=54

Its way more realistic than the "new" lighting used in the port (my opinion only of course)

Or how poweful the Cryengine 2 is:

boulder you are using tech demos, Tech demos =/= games

have you seen some of the UE3 tech demos? muuuuuuch better than GoW (and with full progressive destruction too)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZqNHJ-ekMR4

there, that's a Creyengine 3 tech demo, impressive is it not? (yes I know warm fall colors are not as popping as cold rainforest colors but you get the gist of it)

Also even IF Cryengine 3 was less powerful (it is not really) but more versatile and easy to program than Cryengine 2 it would still be a great achievement

god I can only imagine how freaking amazing Mass Effect would have been if they used C3 rather than the UE3

Nope the first video is the TOD-mod Msters config and not a techdemo but ingame footage.

The second one works with the Editor... the bright forest scene. I found it sometime but stupidly deleted the dn-link.
It ran witth almost 30 FPS on my old Gtx 280, so its a possible option as ingame grfx.
Only the last one is from a machinima movie company or somewhat similiar.
