Graphically, RDR doesn't have the best graphics.

By graphics, they probably see it as the environment, cause that's what makes it look amazing. Lighting also played a huge role in RDR too. Crysis and Crysis 2 however have the bests graphics.

You should tell your mates to watch some Crysis video's, compare it with Red Dead Redemption, and lets see what happens. Honestly, I can't say much about C2 since I myself haven't played it, but it definitely looks way better than Red Dead Redemption.

I was wondering the same thing...
Is cryengine the best when it comes to graphics?
I mean, there is the arma 2,bad company games, stalker games, killzone 2-3 games(and its for console only and it looks like almost has full AA),metro 2033(that looks amazing on dx11)those are some great engines and maybe there are more that i don't remember right now.

Also take into consideration that RDR is a 3rd Person game, and Crysis is 1st Person.

RDR doesn't have high resolution textures since not many people will see it from near, but from far. Crysis however is First person, we will be seeing textures alike from near.

NONE of those games listed in this thread have high resolution textures, 1080p , good physics, AND good graphics...all at the same time. Except crysis. Also consoles can barely handle Crysis graphics on a medium/low mixture, that enough should say a lot.

RDR is a pure console game... and so it just cant be technically better than Crysis or Warhead.
I think your pals arent objective or didnt played Crysis at full detail. Or they jst dont have a clue about what looks good in games.

I really dount know why this treads get made so that pc elitist can start insulting, hey if they find it better thats fine for them but not every body thinks Crysis 2 is the best game graphicaly so just let them be if they think RDR looks better.

Well, you can't judge the graphics from multiplayer. What you really want to look for are the graphics in campaign, that's when the most components and coding are initiated without having fears of freezing like in multiplayer.

I have red dead redemption and the graphics are amazing but i think its more of the games art stlye and level design that looks good over it's actual graphics same goes for killzone, crysis will look/look's better i think your friends or judging crysis from pictures that don't do it justice or if your talking about crysis 2 then there judging the game based of the multiplayer console graphics which or dumbed down to maintain a steady frame rate on console versions.
but from a technically stand point crysis is better then any game out (both crysis 1 and 2) but when talking about art stlye its more of a opinion of which looks better. though crysis is the only game i can think of that is going fore a photo realistic look.

I have to say though, that Metro 2033 looked amazing, especially when it came to indoor environments and lighting. In some respects it was definitely better than Crysis on very high ; I've played both. but hey, Crysis is a 2007 game...

For now it is one of if not the best games out there in terms of graphics. However, there is a large chance that Frostbite 2 in Battlefield 3 could be better. We'll have to wait until GDC to call that one, but there is a lot of promise around Frostbite 2.

Indeed, and metro 2033 is all indoors too. I'd say crysis looks better overall with regards to the scenery ect. but metro definitely has some nice parts and effects. I love the feel of the weapons :)

I think that id's id tech 5 should be better than cryengine 2 and 3 but it's hard to compare at this point because crysis 2 (cryengine 3) and rage (id tech 5) are not released yet.

@Despot_117

I saw the ID tech 5 live on a rage presentation. This Engine mainly uses Megatextures to build a realistic enviroment. But: What i saw was not nearly as good as i thought it would be. The overall texture resolution actually looked pretty mediocre. ( It acutally was shown on a 360 but the guy from ID said the quality of the textures will be the same for all 3 versions)
The Cryengine 2 and 3 use mostly very high res textures ( with texture upgrades: insane texture quality!) So the used textures set the tone for the detail in the game and so for the grfx quality.

For example what the Cryengine 2 could look like with more high res textures for example

Original Crysis texture (very high)

Modified texture:

Now a example for textures in rage:

Though there are no good pictures from the frostbite 2.0 yet but from the presentation you can clearly see that the main focus was on the further development of the possible ingame destruction and not increasing the level of detail:

Metro is the only game that comes close. RDR isn't even comparable, it is an open world third person game, the LODs have to be spread differently: No close up textures needed because of third person, but in exchange your normal 2 to 3 LODs have to cover a really far draw distance meaning those can't be too awesome each. Otherwise you would either lag when too much happens to be on screen, or get pop-in issues. You can't design a game like that like you would a semi open world FPS like Crysis. Metro is yet another level smaller meaning they can haz really nice close up stuff in every room as you never get much on screen at once.

RDR did some impressive things in terms of weather and time of day, but you really can't compare it to Crysis. The Killzones are great at running shadows and lights on a PS3 but the limitations of the platform make for **** textures. Uncharted 2 is a similar story except here they accomplish even more by keeping the player in gruesomely small areas. Graphicswise the Uncharted devs are probably my favourite team because they know their way around creating a look where everything fits into one big picture and they use less prebake - solutions than Guerrilla Games.
