Crysis 2 Performs Horribly

Post » Sun Dec 11, 2011 7:15 pm

Hello everyone. My name is Mithrot and I might have an issue with the game.

So I have Crysis 2 and owned it for awhile. I always had performance issues and wanted to know what exactly is going on. Currently, the game runs at around 13+ FPS on average and thanks to the latest patches, I can't even use my old Configs anymore for a proper boost.

System Specs:
Windows 7 64-bit
Mobile HD4650 1GB DDR2(?) Videocard
4GB Ram DDR2
2.1 Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor (Intel)
Sony Vaio VGNFW455D

Alright, to be fair, I'm on a laptop. My specs aren't good and I know that they are on the lower spectrum of the current PC hardware and that Desktop hardware > Mobile hardware. I get that, and no doubt someone out there will say "GET A BETTER COMPUTER DERP" and blah blah blah.

I understand the sentiment but my issue is that this laptop can run most games just fine at around 720p. Black Ops, UE3, FEAR 3, Portal 2, etc. Most of them ran from 30-90 FPS. Even the original Crysis was far more scalable for my system. But not this game, as it just runs terribly no matter what.

My issue is that even on the default settings the game crawls and I'm wondering exactly what is so special about the game that is causing this much of a hit? Even my old config which had to scale the game in multiple areas (Shadows, Object Detail, Enviroment lighting, Sound quality, etc) could only manage a decent 25 frame average on 1280x720.

Before you ask, yes I updated my video drivers, cleaned my computer, tried WinXP, etc etc.

TL;DR
Is there something wrong with my system or is Crysis 2 doing something differently to warrant such a framerate? I don't see it. Why does it run WORSE than the original Crysis on High/Medium?

I know this thread might sound a little harsh/ignorant but I'm geniunly looking for awnsers. Thanks for the responses. :)

Your system is struggling because the laptop is old. Trying playing with even lower resolution 800x600 or so and you will be able to run it with around 15-20 more frames. The CPU is stressed and the graphics card is maxing.

I would say the major difference between Crysis 2 and the previous generation of games is it's optimisation for multi-core systems. I have a Core 2 Duo clocked at 3ghz and I find it is running pretty much maxed at all times. In MP I can get dips down to 20-25 fps in places. My GFX card is barely using more than 60% as I cap my frames at 50fps.

I'd say it's only recently that games have started to significantly benefit from a quad cpu and this game can theoretically use even more.

Mobile graphics cards = crap.

Laptops for gaming = laughed out of the room.

nothing wrong with gaming on a laptop especially when its (a couple of years ago :() was the fastest 15" in the world.
guess you lug your desktop to lan partys with monitor under 1 arm and box under the other :D

anyways im noticing slightly jumpy gameplay since the latest patch yesterday. been fine since release day until yesterday.

I feel ya man. I have a Lennovo W510. My graphics card is seriously underutilized. This game really takes a hit on my QUAD CPU. I have to play MP at 800 x 560 to avoid stuttering when it heats up. It is worse now in the summer when its hot, but its the only thing I can do to remain competitive in MP. And foreget about multitasking, anything going on in the back ground stutters the game.

I of course, have no problems in any other games. And single player, higher res works fine. May get a cooling pad for my laptop to keep the cpu cool.

Your problem could be related to background processes as well. The core 2 duo only has two cores (no hyper threading), whereas my i7920m has 8 (but catches on fire if I use them all). If you have a background process doing work on one of the cores, Crysis 2 will chug as you aren't getting as much help from the dual cores. Eg if you have a virus scan going at the same time, windows 7 is a bit better than XP for managing threads but has more.

Crysis 1, could at first only really use two cores, then four core support was added. Crysis 2 can use or will be able to use up to 8 cores.

Most of my background processes is pretty much null and I even used a program to disable them for gaming once. That wasn't the soloution.

So far I'm seeing responses that Crysis 2 was meant to use more than 2 cores, but that seems kind of iffy how they couldn't find a way to keep it optimized for two regardless. Especially when CryEngine 3 was based off of CryEngine 2 which handled dual cores just fine. Even Black Ops, which was broken at launch and hounds the CPU as it leaves the load on the GPU dead, doesn't suffer as much as Crysis 2 does.

You are right that Crysis 2 stresses my PC out though, but I'll check to see where exactly. I just don't see this as acceptable even with this kind of hardware.

Thanks for the input so far guys. :)

When Crysis was released the number of quad systems around was small, add in the fact that they have tuned the CryEngine to take advantage of the console systems which are also multi-cored it's clear that dual cores just aren't gonna cut it. Whether you find it acceptable or not is irrelevant - if you want better performance buy some better hardware.
