You will have to wait untill EA/Crytek Gouge the install base for more DLC dollars before you see any form of the editor

"In August 2011 we will be launching a free CryENGINE SDK. If you want to use it for fun, like all our previous MOD SDKs it will be completely free of charge, to anyone who wants to play with it! You just register, download the SDK with a personalized license key and you're good to go!"

If you read it again you will notice that there are 2 different editors. The Crysis 2 SDK and the CryEngine 3 SDK. The former allows for modding of Crysis 2 and requires the base game to run, and will be released early in the summer. The latter is a editor that allows for standalone games to be made, independent of crysis, and will be released in august.

Frankly i don't see reason why would Sandbox Editor cost anything, since it is Crytek tool, not a part of game like DLC.

The second cryengine release will cost money, in the thousands. That's the full engine for creating games and licensing them. You don't honestly think they'll let people just make games with their engine for free, do you?
The C2 editor will be free though.

They are probably accepting the same business model that UT3 engine has. You can develop to a point and not make money (or very much) At "said point" you enter into a different licensing agreement. It's been hugely successful in that community and projects like MW:Living Legends are more likely to take off.
The game development kit for CryEngine 2 was crazy expensive and they would talk to only Established Gaming companies that had a portfolio to show for it. And that was, yes, in the thousands of dollars. I suspect they didn't make a lot of money that way.

This way, folks can get a feel for the engine and its tools and try their hand at game development without a huge investment. It's also a great way to "scout for new talent".

No, it won't cost anything up front.

Personally, I'm temped to put a team together to try a Descent mod. ... still thinking about it....

Because crytek is staffed with tools now that they have fully drunk the EA punch.

I'm pretty sure that's a deal that the make for developers intending to make large quantities of money. I think a main reason they would want to release this SDK free to the public is so they can directly compete with the UDK (Unreal Development Kit). Released in 2010, this is a full, free Software Development Kit that has all of the professional tools used for making games on the Unreal Engine. Of course, when you sign the EULA, there's some fine print saying that you can sell these games you make, but you'll have to give a chunk of your profits to Epic Games.

I could be wrong, but this is a great opportunity to publicize the engine and make it a serious competitor against the UE3.
