Crysis 2

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 10:57 am

Is Crysis 2 better on PC or consoles? I played Warhead on my PC (obviously) and enjoyed it, but it seems to have been built with consoles in mind this time around. I'm trying to decide which to buy it for... :unsure2:

Note: It would be on Ps3, if not PC.

While the game is clearly a console port, you still get many of the usual PC advantages. Better controls, graphics, resolution, framerate, mods if a modder's SDK ever surfaces, online capabilities, so on.

I will probably buy it whenever the price lowers. I did enjoy the first one for the PC and am going to try this one for the 360. I didnt think that the first one was as great as everyone acted, sure it had good graphics, but that was about all it did for me. But I have heard many good reports about this one, from here and from my friends at school.

Better controls

This is the big one for me. Playing the PC beta I felt like the controls would be much better suited for a console. It was just too heavy for a PC game.

Well you could always plug a controller in if that's your jam, even use the PS3 one if you have a bluetooth adapter, but apparently the M&K controls are much improved by disabling mouse smoothing (Which, as Crysis 2's menu is abysmal, you have to do with manual editing or a third party utility), so either way you should be good on that.

I have been playing crysis 2 recently and it has been a major disappointment. It is poorly optimized, worse than the original crysis actually. I can play the original crysis on high but I can't even play this on whatever equates to the lowest setting on their broken choice of graphics without my computer overheating. I also had alot of fun with sandbox 2 only to find out they are releasing sandbox 3 over the summer and that the leaked beta already has it.

This was actually a rather large disappointment and this is without getting into the gameplay, which I feel is far worse.

Um...not to be rude, but I think the problem here is on your end. Chase the dust bunnies out of your computer and make sure all your fans are working. Chances are if your computer's overheating it's a hardware fault, not the games, especially since Crysis 2's system reqs are pretty tame, considering.

Crysis 2 is much, much better optimized than Crysis 1 (first game that is, not Warhead). The reason the first game was such a "computer killer" is because its DX10 mode especially was terribly optimized. It hogged resources it shouldn't have, and at one point during the final boss has a memory leak that results in BSODs. (Never been patched, either. <_< )

I can run the first Crysis in DX10, "Very High" settings just fine (at least until the memory leaks ensue!), although it causes my computer's fans to spin so hard I think it may one day take flight and launch itself into low orbit. Likewise, I can run Crysis 2 on Extreme (...whatever that means, Crytek  ) just as well, but with a slight jump in framerate and without my hardware working quite so hard. (I checked on my graphics card while running Crysis 2 out of curiosity the other day: the fan speed didn't crank up nearly as high, and the temps were more comparable to what I get playing Oblivion for hours on end. With the first Crysis in DX10, my graphics card got hot.)

Thanks for the info Tyraa. I tried cleaning it out and know my fans are working but I still dunno why my machine overheats on this game. I would set it to low if this game even had a bloody low. The only good part feels to be the story and the enemies and I want to know the end. AFAIK the patch added the lowest setting as "Good". That makes no sense at all.

You finished the game already and the game just came out? This doesn't bode well at all. What is it? An 8 or 12 hour game? Did you rush through it, or is that it?

Also I read quickly that it's very buggy. Is this true? Is this another rushed game released early only to be patched later?

I've heard the game clocks in at around 16 hours for most people, which is very respectable for an FPS. I think HL2 took me about that long the first time through. Maybe closer to 20. Compare that to THQ's Homefront, in which the single-player campaign clocks in at a mind-boggling 3-4 hours. As for "just came out"...the release date in the US was March 22nd, almost a week ago now. That's plenty of time to finish a 16-hour game.

Aside from the issue I mentioned in the first post with the game not correctly supporting Crossfire/SLI and multi-core GPUs, I've yet to hit a serious bug. There's been a couple of AI fails (one enemy repeatedly walking into a wall instead of attacking, for instance), and the game kept forgetting my CD key (only a problem if you're going to do multiplayer), but that's been it. Most of the bug complaints I've heard about have been on the multiplayer side, which I've got no experience with. (But which I've heard is very, very broken in some regards--they've been patching it, though.)

I was going to pre-order this but Shogun 2 won me over, and I think I'll save for BF3 instead. The game does look awesome though.

Maybe I played to many TES games where I expect over 250 hours worth of playing. Maybe that is another reason why I don't play FPS games, not long enough and I don't play multi player.

This would be why. I was satisfied with the campaign's length, especially for a shooter. :)

I think too many people expect to be able to get hundreds of hours out of every single game, as the majority of games don't have anywhere near that. Especially not shooters and (most) action adventure titles.

That might be it. ;) In terms of expected play-time, you just can't compare open-ended sandboxes like the TES series or highly addictive-and-replayable games like Civ IV with shooters and other action-oriented titles. Or even adventure games for that matter. It's an apple vs. oranges thing in terms of how they're designed and how their stories are written.

I'd like to say that Crysis 2 isn't exactly a four hour walk in the park; it took me at least three times that the first time I played through, what with being unfamiliar with the control scheme and all. Subsequent playthroughs took about 7-8 hours... then again, I was also speed running through with Stealth on all the time.

Over all, I'd say get this game. With the Nanosuit and the level design, you can always find a new way to approach any give situation; one time, you might leap in, guns blazing and fists flying; another, you could stealth through and simply neck-snap or chest-stab until you finished the mission.

My Xbox 360 version glitched out on three different levels....The level loads out but i don't have a gun, can't get a gun, but can still run around and cloak my way through the level!!!!!!!.
The first time it happened i thought it must just be part of the game so i beat the level without a gun...easy.
then on the next level i realized it was messed up because i saw a youtube video of it, and i remembered them having weapons, so i quit the game and reloaded it.
and it was okay since then on!
.
.
.....i know you loved my story! admit it!

The PC version doesn't even have an editor. Doubt the 360 could support one for Crysis though. I did hear some info from the leaked beta, and the editor it conveniently has, that says it has an export to console function though. People on the 360 might get lucky and get an editor that requires a pc to use, but I don't think they will get anything better.

Does anyone know what you should start with if you have used the limited edition bonus stuff, more specifically, do you start with one of those weapon unlock tokens?
I got the scar-skin and hologram attachment, can change my dog-tag outline, custom class 1 unlocked and have the following 'tokens' to unlock stuff :

4 dog-tags, 1 armor unlock, 1 stealth unlock, 1 tactical unlock, 1 grenade unlock and the 4 class unlocks.

The point is, I had a weapon unlock which I used to unlock the sniper rifle. But my stats and the suit unlocks keep resetting, for the suit unlocks I got my tokens back after they got reset, but I seem to have lost access to the sniper without getting the token back.

Could this mean that in the long run I won't be able to unlock all weapons, but have one missing?

My limited edition (physical copy; Steam version might be different) says it comes with the following:

- Bonus XP: "day 1 access to preset classes plus a custom class"
- SCAR Weapon Skin: "SCAR assault rifle digital camouflage"
- Weapon Attachment: "day 1 access to SCAR hologram decoy"
- Unique Platinum Dog-Tag

So...doesn't look like there's a weapon unlock.

Maximum disappointment. Played the MP in the beta, and it divinely svcked, too much is wrong with it to go in detail. But its like MW2 sci-fi style and with more annoyances. As for the SP, same problems as with the first game. Infinite spawning bad guys (with terrible AI I might add) take away any satisfaction for killing the baddies, and just makes things annoying once you realize you need to reach point B for them to stop spawning and flying at you like bugs to a windshield.

I have for PC, and I would not recommend this game to anyone.

What I do like about the game is the weapon addons. The shottie with the silencer was cool. Till I killed 500 bad guys and got sick of it not realizing they dont stop spawning.

edit - I had more complaints about the MP, but I havnt touched it since I tried it in beta, so I dont recall all of them.

That's true, but I started out with 3 suit unlocks, 4 dog tags unlocks and a weapon unlock (next to what you already mentioned). My guess is that if you'd start at level 1 and level to level 5, you'd get those unlocks as a reward for leveling..

If this has already been posted forgive me, but the only threads I could find about it were the beta threads.

Anyway, yesterday Crysis 2 came out and thus far I've been loving it. The gameplay just feels right, the enemies (especially the Ceph) are great, as the Ceph will jump from ground to wall to ground, land quickly and lunge at you, then retreat etc.

The story also seems to be a lot deeper than the first's, although I'm disappointed that I haven't yet seen any of the enemies from Crysis.

I bought the 360 version and was surprised at how well it runs. I've noticed VERY few stutters, although there is some kind of weird grain effect.

Thus far I agree with IGN's 9.0, EA really seems to know what they're doing as of late, with Dead Space 2 and now Crysis 2.

Oh, and this may also be of interest: The game doesn't require an online code as Dead Space 2 and several other EA games do.

Discuss. :)

I'm not getting it. Its a pure port.
Apparently on the PC, at the start menu it says "Press start to continue" (Since patched to enter) and when you do the brightness test it says "change the colours on your TV or something", instead of moniter, and originally in the PC version, it still had aim assist from the console versions... its pathetic, they will not get my money.

It's strange, because the game itself, graphically, is incredibly impressive and in many areas beats Crysis 1. But then the little things - changing the text in the menus - give the impression that they just didn't give a damn. Very odd.
