Crysis 2 with SGSSAA - anyone tried it yet?

Post » Thu Dec 30, 2010 2:19 pm

As some of you may know, Crysis 2 supports Sparse Grid Supersampling Anti-aliasing. While it's a brilliant technique, performance (FPS) suffers drastically. You have three settings: 2x, 4x and 8x (the last one is really a PC killer).

Here's a video of 'how-to': http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=fbjr72VYepo

Here's a screen: http://www.pcgameshardware.de/aid,817462/Downsampling-Bessere-Grafik-in-jedem-Spiel-auch-in-Crysis-2-Mit-Bildbeweis/Grafikkarte/Test/bildergalerie/?iid=1503569&vollbild

Well, did anyone try? :)

Good point. It's a Nvidia exclusive, isn't it?

I play Singleplayer with Downsampling....but only at 2100 x 1314 ....cause 2520 x 1576 drops me to 30 FPS and this i can feel!

On 2100x 1314 play fine with around 50 or bit more FPS and thats good playable for me.

BtW....i own a GTX 580...

I experiment with cut off FSAA and Post MSSAA in Autoexec.cfg.....cause i more like a visibility which is sharp...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The ATI cards do super sampling. Only game I ever used it on was GTR2, because even regular adaptive multi sampling AA didn't smooth out the jaggies at the far off parts of the track coming into view. I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about on the nvidia cards?

It was like scaling the whole image up to an insane resulution, then scaling it back down again. Only problem was, it also super sampled the textures as well and made them look blurry. Infact, it could make the outlines look blury as well, if you used wide tent samples..

I know what you mean, I have the same card and am probably going to be upgrading to either a 580 or 590 soon... either that or I'll just wait for a 6XX card ;p

I just recently bought an HD5870 :P. It'll serve me well since i only have a 19-inch display with a resolution of 1440x900.

Here's a comparison with 2x

No savegames means it's hard to line up consecutive shots...

OT: I have 1080p, but all games run good on max settings. Crysis 2 40-60 fps on hardcoe.

Works great with 580 sli, totally makes the game more appealing to the eye without all that blur aa crap.

So does this look better than the blurry AA? And how much different is the performance hit?

2x SGSSA looks nice, especially when you use a ultra high config.
it runs really smooth, how can i make it even sharper? (4xSGSSA or more?)

tried it. hit my GTX 460 SLI like a rock. dropped from 60 fps avg to less than 40. probably could be a future setting for crysis 2 when we have HD 8870 and GTX 980.

i've got a question.
all this talk about SGSSAA made me think ...what is the best anti-aliasing technique?in terms of graphics,
performance doesnt matter.(downsampling doesn't count)

and by the way op the link that u posted to the image of the supposed SGSSAA crysis 2,is actually downsample
the best "AA" technique ever, but its the most pc killer technique .

explanation of downsample here: http://www.pcgameshardware.com/aid,690489/Crysis-at-6-400-x-4-000-Ultra-High-Res-Gaming-with-256-megapixels/Practice/

Look for "Crysis 2". It should be there.

I gave it a shot yesterday, with 2xSGSSAA. There is a huge FPS hit, but still there is enough left for my SLI setup.

Here's a pic: http://i51.tinypic.com/2uo0wpi.jpg

(I only just started the game, as you can see...)

4xSGSSAA: http://img688.imageshack.us/f/crysis24xsgssaa.jpg/

It's still playable for me: between 30-60 FPS.

8xSGSSAA: http://img807.imageshack.us/f/crysis28xsgssaa.jpg/

Totally unplayable, haha. Between 10-30 FPS.
