Barring any hardware changes (clocks, new USB devices) It does sound like scrambled files... If you want to try to avoid a re-install, testing if its the "work folder" is relatively easy:
1. make a copy of your entire C:\users\\Saved Games\Crysis 2 folder
2. Delete the original, forcing the game to do a "new install" initialization
3. If you can login to multiplayer, you can then restore just the
C:\users\\Saved Games\Crysis 2\profiles and
C:\users\\Saved Games\Crysis 2\savedgames folders to restore your multiplayer and singleplayer settings.
If a profile file is damaged the game will usually just delete and re-create them ("all my weapons are gone, wtf!"), not freeze up. There are other cache and work files in that Saved Games folder that I'm thinking might be the culprit.
If that doesnt work, restore the entire backup that you made and reinstall the game...
