Crytek Says Crysis 2 "backfired a bit"

Post » Sat Jun 25, 2011 8:12 am

Interesting reading here guys From EuroGamer

Crytek's decision to make Crysis 2 more accessible to low-spec PC gamers and their console brethren might have been a mistake, reckons the studio's CEO.

Cevat Yerli told Gamasutra that the move upset a significant portion of the shooter's fanbase, something that it's now trying to remedy with the impending DirectX 11 patch.

"Crysis 1's intention was, if I were to play it three years later, it looks great. And it does, actually, it fulfilled that. But it made it difficult for entry-level players," he explained. "So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit."

As detailed earlier this week, the DX 11 patch arrives on 27th June alongside update 1.9.

"This is much more like a gift to the high-end community," said Yerli. "And I think gamers will appreciate that. It lifts up Crysis 2 and gives a sneak peak of how PC gaming will evolve in the future, if you support a high-end preference."

The original Crysis was infamously demanding on PC users' hardware, and was one of the first games to use the Direct3D 10 framework of DirectX 10.

I think we should get some goodies for free too...

I just want a free film grain glitch fixing patch. That will satisfy me.

Why would he give console gamers free things?

He's saying it might have been a mistake to cater to consoles, AND low spec PCs. Which to be frank is true. Crysis 1 sold millions on PC alone. If they had pushed Crysis 2 to higher levels on PC, it probably would have topped it. So they wouldn't be needing to get desperate.

On the other hand, if all platforms versions were developed in their own rights, maybe it could have turned out differently.

Least he's trying to rectify his lost fanbase. Maybe he won't drive the hype train as much in the future. (Unless PC exclusive)

I am a bit confused. When the article says it was made "more accessible," what exactly was done?

When you look at Crysis 1, you had to have a powerful PC to run it and FULLY enjoy it. With Crysis 2, they reduced a lot of things, in order to get it on low spec pcs, and consoles. Which in turn, backfired and resulted in all these issues, etc. It sounds like he regrets not keeping Crysis PC exclusive.

I'd assume he meant something like that.

I guess their employees were mad too. Knowing this is Crytek's flagship. I never seen so much excitement from them on Twitter. I hope this will stop them talking about other games for a while. BF3 may never look like Crysis on PC or Console. However, I still want them to give us a gift.

We are not entitiled to anything free whatsoever. Sure it would be nice, free is aways good but that's not how the world works.

Personally, it's nice to know that everything is going noticed and that they realize the mess they're into... However, it doesn't instill me with much confidence in them to make Crysis 3... Hopefully they learn from their mistakes.

I would have been more than happy to wait for the PC version to be launched and stable before receiving a PORTED version to the consoles. Then again, I've always believed it better to take care of one's fan base before reaching out to others...

Also, your poll is flawed!! Who doesn't want free things?!

Maybe I'm missing the point here, but isn't the PC Update not just that? An update? Which, in turn can only be benefited by the people with High End PCs (which seemingly get better every darn month)? I'd be perfectly happy if all they ever gave to Xbox360 gamers were constant updates that actually improve on the game (especially the MP). Those I think we can demand, should demand, have a right to receive and should receive. Anything else... Like I said, maybe I'm missing the point. The game runs on the console already in 1080p (which is the limit for the Xbox). It even runs in (allegedly) passable 3D. The graphics are pretty much the best the console has done so far (without the glitches, obviously). So any more improvement on that front would make it necessary to BUY one of these High-End PCs. But isn't that true for most other games? Someone mentioned BF3; if you would compare both PC and console versions, you'd get something similar, with High-End PCs being the creme of the crop, both visually and performance wise.
I don't know, but one of the reasons I even bought the console was so that I wouldn't have to worry about Minimum or Recommended System Requirements.

So just because our preferred platform is outperformed by another, we should get, like a DLC for free? I don't see that happening. On the other hand, if someone from Crytek said "Sorry guys, we kinda screwed up the Multiplayer a little, so here's some free new Maps for all you faithful fans out there.", now that, that I could totally stand behind. That would be well deserved.
