Drivers have a lot to do with this problem, in fact most problems are caused by drivers. I don't doubt NVIDIA and AMD could work closer with game devs to optimise or release a game in a better state with drivers waiting. John Carmack admitted that RAGE could have been handled better in that respect so it's really down to all parties involved to make released games better.

Nvidia has issues because they have skimped on hardware implementation for certain DX11 features. If you look at the last ten years of graphics cards, nvidia's business model has been optimising performance for current games and expecting people to update their cards in 1-2 years, preferably 1 year. AMD on the other hand has always been the leader for implementing new features at the cost of relatively lower performance in current games.

Just look at the 600 series, its performance in some of the aspects of DX11 features is sometimes lower than 500 series (except for titan, which is an expensive beast in dx11). However how many full implementations of DX11 do we have... like 1-3 games :X. More coming up though, so imagine titans architecture will be spread across the product line in the 700 series.

Once you rule out driver issues, then hardware issues, usually crysis is very stable by about patch 1.4. There are a lot of people blaming crytek unduly because they don't understand computers properly. Of course there are still bugs in the engine, some somewhat stupid but most of the critical problems now are driver/hardware related.
