Crytek - verify your .pak files for Christ sake!

Post » Fri Dec 31, 2010 6:58 am

This is probably a direct message to Crytek - won't go far but i want as many people to read this as possible...

The .pak files NEED TO HAVE SOME KIND OF PROTECTION!

I'm talking checking their integrity when connecting to a server...
It shouldn't be that anyone can simply edit their values save them and import them back into the game and you are bloody golden!

Crytek why oh why did you leave the most valuable things client side - smells like teen spir... errm... console i mean.

I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to make sure the .pak files are legit every time you launch the game right?

It is a big issue.Pak file is easily editable.I managed to edit it with my minor programming skill. There should be some kind of encryption.

Wait WHAT?! ENCRYPT the Pak files MORE? We've been restricted enough. I'd say add a check for modified files on MP. But at least leave them open for SP!

well yeah... they don't need more encryption but they need an integrity check with the master server.

when you log in the game will scan the most relevant .pak files for changes and if there are any they would be overridden.

You cant really encrypt and encrypted file much more :D

anyhow one script can extract those pak files

I've been thinking about an anti-cheat for a while.
Maybe when you connect a match, the server would check random variables in your MP .pak files. That would be very simple, yet it could work well.

exactly what i posted above but you didn't read...

not when you join the match though... that would take way to long to check - remember some of the pak files take nearly 8 minutes to extract!

its because MP is developed by Crytek UK who are stupid console playing developers. Crysis 2 is their first MP on pc. Atleast now I know to avoid any crytek UK game.

Anyways I might givein and buy brink. It also has public server files which is pretty neat

brink dont impress me all that much it graphics not even close to realistic as crysis 2, same with witcher 2 - and neither of those games are dx11 or even will support dx11 so that is pretty sad for those games. nothing can beat crysis 2 for a long time not even bf3 since that is just console port anyway, good job crytek u are total amaze me

Ok troll so you are successful in trolling. Now **** off.

Crysis 2 is nowhere as good looking game is it could be realize that - it doesn't support DX11 and how do you know Brink wont?

Also brink has cartooney graphic as it is not suppose to be REALISTIC! You are the biggest and most retarded noob I have ever come across. Go die please do the world a favor!

Stop dissing every good franchise to walk the earth before Crysis was born... I wander what you think of Half Life 2 and Far Cry

right on.

multiple checks of multiple types. serverside in-game checks will tend to have a longer shelf-life than "check this file at startup" type measures for obvious reasons. Its not like Crytek isnt aware of these approaches -- its baffling why some arent implemented.

Its as though their WYSIWIP (What You See Is What You Play on all three platforms) approach has left them with a big rats nest code base that is fiendishly difficult to work on. Maybe they dont take decisive action cause they dont understand their own code works. Cool software protoyping tools (web page designers, for example) can do that.

Here's the promise : http://crytek.com/cryengine/cryengine3/overview, we're playing the reality.

Anyway, hell yeah! Use some tricks, Crytek!

Guys, if you want to discuss other games, do it in the Off Topic section. If you can't keep topics on topic then threads are removed.

I dont really know ups and downs of this but seems like very important part of anti hacking process to me..

Almost every vid about crysis 2 say about how crysis 2 is wide open for easy hack for its simple programming...

@.@ What?! Could this be the respond when I reported Justin Bieber trolling post? I did report Justin Bieber's post as off-topic, not the thread.

Crysis 1/Wars has open pak's, but you can't use the edited version of them for MP, because dedicated servers use their own files. That's needed for C2, not encrypting the .pak's even more

exactly, that's why i didnt understand why they didnt put all necessary XML server side, and force player to play with them instead of using the client xml.

its a totaly BETTER idea than just lock the game like they are actualy doing.

sad thing is this has been done because C2 was developed for consoles from what it seems.

Sadder thing yet is that those files got hacked on the X360 >.>
