CTD's Every 10-20 minutes

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 12:00 pm

Every time I try to play FONV, I can start it up fine, run it on full graphics (without multisampling anything, it causes stuttering every time I look at the sky), and suddenly the game will freeze, and the sound will start looping. At this point, if I don't alt-tab instantly the game will crash to desktop. But I am able to get away with 2 or 3 alt-tabs before the game crashes without warning.

Now I've tried a massive amount of fixes, which I'll try to remember and write them all here:

-The Nvidia fix (that makes my card display as a GeForce 7900 GS)
-The d3d9.dll fix
-putting the affinity on dual AND single core
-putting the graphics on low
-shutting off the sound
-updating my drivers
-rolling back my drivers
-turning off antialiasing
-turning off anisotropic filtering
-making my iFPSClamp=60 in fallout.ini
-tried turning my power management to max performance in nvidia control panel, but my card doesn't support it
-verifying game cache (always says that 1 file is corrupt and will be re-acquired, but never is)

I don't think there's any more, but if there are I don't remember them off the top of my head :|

My dxdiag is as follows:

What drivers are you using first also post full system specs and info like on my post http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1122570-how-to-dxdiag/page__st__40 sorry but I would jab my own eyes out then go over a mini book of mostly useless information for me anyways of a dxdiag file. Posting it only gives the higher lvl techs/devs info but not really that much for a forums member that is not wanting to sift though lines and lines of txt.

Dxdiag only helps the devs to some degree and helps them see if there are any major hardware/software issues, and what drivers your possibly using thats about it....

Yeah you're right, it's really only the first 10-20 or so lines that matter of DxDiag anyway (at least to me lol).

As for my system:

CPU: Intel Quad 2.4Ghz (no overclock)

GPU: Nvidia GeForce 260 GTX (with latest drivers, 260.99)

RAM: 3582MB DDR2

BTW, I have tried to roll back the video drivers to v 185.xx, problems still continued.

Hope this helps, and thanks for the reply.

go to my post and get the 186.xx ones i posted plus use the guide that is in my sig for unisntalling/reinstalling drivers, btw if your using onboard sound and have realtek audio drivers the windows updated ones messes them up better to go back to an older verhion if the new ones on thier site not though windows update do not work for you. so you have a Q6600 need you to really fill out that info on the post i linked=) the works. if your using a 32bit os keep in mind the 768 megs of video ram is being counted against the ram you have installed on your system. the ideal amount of ram these days really is 6gigs+ for ddr3 and about 8gigs for p55/older motherboards.

Oh how long have you had windows installed on your machine?

Here just copied this just quote me remove the quotes and fill this out=)
This is more or less for major issues but most of the issues going on are minor besides the bugs in particular areas/how you do things.
Saved game files are also an issue on their size once the player gets to or exeeds 5-6 megs on a save file things begin to break sadly.... meaning the player has amassed too many items to outfit his own army....
Playing cards for carvan once you get x amount is too much.... Having these huge save/data base files causes things to break and odd things in the game to happen in the scripts/triggers. Hording up all these things and making huge save game files also causes alot of bugs in game why? I dont know I didnt code this thing I would rather jab my own eyeballs out then be a code monkey, but I love you guys you make me cool tools=D I just like to model/uv/texture, and do some simple lightsetups plus get maya to do things its not supposed to do=/

Drivers per Card Series
GTX 4XX latest WHQL That got release a week or so ago... I am using an older set of beta drivers and dont have to do this oddly enough
2XX GTX Old WHQL 18x.xx drivers the 184.xx or the 186.18's where prob the best for them anything higher dont touch it with a 10 foot pole... They are drivers MEANT for the 200 series that dont have the starting of fermi integrations into them that slowed games esp game effects down in FO3.
9XXX Series 18x.xx Skipped this entire line because of the low amount of vram....my overclocked 8800 Ultra used to put the smack down on a 9800GX2 at higher resolutions, and eye candy cranked up.
8XXX Series 18x.xx drivers
7XXX Series cannot remember its been a long long time since I used the 7 series and didnt like those cards too much my 7950 was alright if I didnt plug in its molex for some reason=/ But only had that card for a short period of time Your best bet is to find out what drivers worked best with fo3 so use google/bing.
Anything older its been too long since I used a 6 series card and below=/ Sorry

My Driver Guide on the EVGA Forums"use rec drivers on info above for nvidia cards.... for FO NV

400 Series onboard HD Audio drivers on the gpu causes issues in games here is a fix on the EVGA forums to get rid of them
http://www.evga.com/...m.aspx?m=586183

Crashing issues That I know about
Ultra Lux Bathhouse
Once your inside you crash i know alot of you had, once your in the room to meet your contact from the match book do not look at the pool keep your back to it and your camera in first person view. Kill the assassin dont bother looting him, walk backwards strife right to the exit never looking at the pool as quickly as possible once you kill the guy who killed the member of the white glove. Save before, during and after talking to him and exit asap once you have spoken to him dont ask me why this is an issue I dont have a clue. I just know how to get past it.... and continue playing the game.
The Thorn
Do not setup a custom match of creatures vs creatures..... many times they wont fight and will just look at each other keeping you from doing the quest from the chick above running the show. You can go in and fight creatures though for caps but once you beat an opponent exit out the way you came in, going though the exit for the mobs you just faced will result in the game crashing....

DXDIAG is all nice and cool and all, but its for MAJOR hardware/software issues and 99.99% of the time on here the issues and fixes i put above are the cause of things on these forums and angry customers. It will not help them figure out why is your game running so slow... why is it bugging out.... have been gaming for years like 25-27ish or so now but once dxdiag and directx came out this only helped developers determine what kind of system you are running that is about it... and if any major hardware/software issues are detected by it....
Now you want to see a propper pc specs sheet

Include DXDIAG "this is so the techs can look over and tell if its a major hardware/software issue but it does not always say.
Now you give a game support tech/support the info above and they know what all of it means meaning you didnt hire joe smoe
that knows nothing about hardware. Along with devs giving devs this kind of info it gives them an idea where to start on working
with issues and patching alot quicker. Yeah its not game companys job to do tech support but if it can be pointed at something faulty,
an issue truly on thier end or with a driver. You have a customer walking away happy knowing a small issue is fixed that was on their end,
or its a game issue that needs to be addressed in the next patch, or they need to go talk to thier hardware vendor or pre built computer oem
company and possibly get something fixed. Or that company can converse with say nvidia/game company and get to the bottom of the issue.

yoru ram timings if you pull a stick out if you have a quality stick of ram but most of the time they will have stickers your ram timings are like 8-6-4-80 v1.67v its normally listed on your ram=)

Alot of these issues people are having are pretty much some sort of driver related issue, the game running in dx10/11 mode when forcing dx 9 cuts out alot of the issues when you force it. I am not saying the game is glitchy because it is save game files bigger than 5-6 megs strange things start happening in game.... some areas are bugged and you have to know how to get around it, once thing at the thorn you cannot do or you canot even do the main quest line for the thorn... but most of my crashes have been those things right there, the save game file sizes is when i started to amass large large amounts of things in my personal house in game or at one of the safe houses i litterally could had outfitted an army.... But keeping your drivers done right and clean helps take out alot of issues in games/problem solving=) also saves you from pulling your hair out.... each time I do not do my driver guide when I am in a hurry have a new gpu that just came out, i throw my gpu driver guide out ot the window because I am excited over using some new card and 9 times out of 10 it has bitten me in the rump.... where I would have to go though the whole proccess of it because I was impatient.

But the more you know about pcs the more enjoyable pc gaming can become. You know how to deal with the issues when you run into them and fix them quick. It also ensures when crazy issues come out on games like this you have the least issues as possible.

Me personally steam adds a whole new slew of issues to the equation as well I had to disable everything, a popup of buy this game will also crash the game.... plus the file scanning says one file is messed up no matter what.... some people have to disable all those things in steam like everything or play fonv in offline mode. I purchased my game on steam, but also got a collectors edition in hopes it would not have steam on it and i could do things like in FO3 well that is not the case even on a hard copy...

Yeah that didn't make any sense to me so I didn't post it, but the RAM timings are 4-4-4-13-15 at 270.3 MHz, at 1.8 volts and 5-5-5-18-22 at 400 MHz at 1.8 volts

I've disabled everything with steam, even run it in offline mode and it still crashes.

Btw, rolled back the audio drivers using the windows rollback thing, and i still crashed within 5 minutes.

I'm just kinda iffy on going through the guide that you have on the EVGA forums, I don't like the idea of completely uninstalling my video drivers, then having to reinstall older ones in safe mode. Couldn't I just use Driver Sweeper and delete my version folders and install the older version without restarting? Or is there gonna be registry problems or w/e?

Its actually always good to clean out your drivers this way, that application from GURU3D.com is the best one out there for cleaning out your computer of old gpu files JUST be sure you select the display drivers only when you run it or you will have to re-install windows.... you will get rid of the critical motherboard drivers. If you select anything else that says nvidia. The way your doing it with just installing over old ones/just unisntall/reinstall new ones or old ones is not a good thing. Things get left behind that guide you see on the EVGA forums iv been using since the 90's back in the 3dfx days but back then we had to manually remove things from the registery and out of the windows directory. That post on the EVGA forums has been going now for hmmm 3 years, having to update it with new forums and new gpus when one or the other gets an upgrade/update. Most of us on the EVGA forums old computers or not that really keep our computers maintained from cleaning physically to cleaning out software do not run into many problems until its something major and hardware related and its normally due to us aggresssvily overclocking to satisfy our inner epeen on a bench score or to get that extra 10-20 fps out of our hardware for more demanding games. Some cases its something simple when we just get careless and are in a hurry=)

Back to your sound card thing setting things to 2 pc speakers in your realtek software helps too, but thats normally with sounds dissapearing have ran into this with sc2 could not get 5.1 to 7.1 sound to work... some people it would just crash.... as for your drivers do not install the old/new ones in safe mode, just do the steps in my guide you only remove them fully with the software i linked in safemode.

I tried the 4gb exe file the d3d9 dll and new drivers but one thing that has been working for a few hours and no crashes is the water sampling set to "low"

thing is is he has a 260 GTX should not have to run water sampling on low but its worth a shot, he should at least be able to possibly get medium to high but not ultra on a 260 and a q6600 with 4gigs of ram well 3.5xx something usable on a 32bit os.

Have you tried changing this setting in the ini file?

bUseThreadedAI=1

Then make a new line and add:

iNumHWThreads=2

Donta1979, I just finished following your instructions, hopefully this works...

If it does, your picture's going up on my wall right next to iron maiden's ;)

Also, Mike, if this doesn't work I'll try that next, mind telling me what it does though? curiosity.

Well I didn't CTD this time, but I just got a BSOD when going into VATS.

It's never happened to me before, but I don't use VATS too often so I'm not sure if it's going to be a recurring thing or what.

But at least the game didn't get a chance to CTD :P

Right after I rebooted from finishing the 186.18 driver install, I started up the game and was playing fine, til I entered VATS on something and my computer totally locked up. Then it flashed to a blue screen and restarted.

I've had this happen to me before with other games due to overheating, but my GPU stays under 60C at all times, so that's definitely not it.

Gonna give it another shot right now and I'll tell you what happens.

look at my driver post it could be the heatsink is a little fillted with dust or your gpu just needs to be reseated at least your in game now=) I know a few people have had vats issues. Sadly I cannot reproduce it I have gotten rid of all my older hardware over the past year so the wife didnt kill me with all the spare parts I had laying around.... Kind of funny how a guy in the military goes from billy bob bad a@# grunt to college, to making video games and being an artistic computer nerd=)

Only the type person who shouldn't be playing a PC version allows that to happen even once without fixing it. A PC-oriented game player is CURIOUS, and wants to know things. like what is the actual error message, and how can I make it pause long enough to read it?

Overheated hardware typically shuts the system down without the BSOD interruption, and on the same basis as getting rid of the automatic restart from a BSOD, a PC-oriented game player has a thermal sensor logger running. Incurious people should stick with console versions.

Should you be willing to learn, after all, Google can tell you about both fixing the auto reboot and finding a thermal monitor.

Your running EVGA Precision right? go to the wrench icon monitoring close to teh top it shows gpus tempature I pretty much have mine always running in the task bar and on screen display. Heat or the wrong settings via the bios can cause bsods or something going bad hardware wise, or something not seated/connected right. Heat with pcs does not always shut things down trust me=) It can keep going to the point of a bsod or just shut the system down. Also what are your cpu temps? Are you using any motherboard monitoring software? If so disable it, also if you want to check your cpu temps use something like Core Temp. Are you using an intel stock heatsink or aftermarket? What TIM are you using aka thermal grease. When was the last time you changed it out? Glad I at least got you into the game though=)

Not using any mobo monitoring software, as for my CPU temps I've also never seen any of my cores go higher than 60C, even while in game, same as my GPU.

The heatsink is whatever came with the computer, so it's stock.

As for TIM, i'm not quite sure what that is, so assume I'm not using any :P

Also in the past 8 months or so that I've been running this GPU (when I had to move everything around to make room) this hasn't happened at all, so I'm going to rule out that something is seated incorrectly.

Edit:
We're back to square 1, the game just randomly crashed, in the same fashion as it had before this mess with the BSOD. I also just checked the video driver version to see if I installed it correctly, and it did, so I'm going to try MikeMaximus' fix now, and see what happens.

still things get gese loose over time part of pvp 101 maintence=) TIM you have it its a thermal compound, aka thermal interface material, normally a grey substance that needs to be changed out every 6-12 months if your running the factory stuff, newer tims last a bit longer. But your cores you need to check. If you where not using TIM its on your gpu, cpu, mobo's north birdge and southbridge. Its always good to go over everything regardless it lets you track down issues, and helps with the proccess of elimination. But yeah are you good to go now?

If that does not work worst comes to worst wipe your entire hard drive reinstall windows, have your drivers you need the good ones that work on a cd or flash drive, install them "do not let windows install/dnload updates for your video/lan/audio drivers.... after your done installing windows install stam, install fo nv. If your still getting crashes after all of that. Use the DX9 file off of the fallout nexus site. If this does not work then there is something wrong with some of your hardware on your pc.

MikeMaximus' fix didn't work either.

I'm already using the DX9 dll, and it's not my hardware because this is the only game that does it. I think it's the game engine, it's just unstable, at least when used with my hardware.

So now since I've tried just about every idea in the book, I think it's time to sit it out and wait for a patch :| ugh.

if there is a problem with the save getting too big because of hoarding, is it possible to make a player house or separate storage container type thing that will store its contents in a separate xml (or whatever) file, then write back and forth from that file to the player's inventory as needed and keep it out of the save file? i don't know enough about geck to figure that out right now.

i always assumed everyone hoards, but i saw a post here from someone saying they had too many bottle caps at the end, which kind of amazed me that that person would spend all that time clicking through vendor windows. i guess i don't really know what's normal. also, i have a lot of faith that bethesda is going to fix the card deal. that one is odd.
