CTD on loading a save AND starting new game

Post » Tue May 29, 2012 2:46 am

I've never needed a gamesas forum account before this. I've been around, but never actually needed one for any particular reason. So hello, and I'm sorry I have to start on such a negative note.

I'm faced with a bit of a problem. The problem is that Skyrim crashes consistently at the same point in time, all the time. I've browsed the internet for fixes, and tried many of them to no avail. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Skyrim three times now, including mods, and nothing seems to work. I've tried activating different sets of mods, and slowly activating them one by one to find one that may be broken, however just when I thought I had found the culprit, it began freezing again.

Here's the deeper stuff.

1) Launch Skyrim through the Skyrim Script Extender.
2) Intro movie plays. Skip this.
3) Main menu loads. Everything is working so far.
4) Click new game.
5) Alduin statue revolving on screen. Usually, the two 'intel' items that show up are the quote from "The Dragonborn Comes" and the one about how dual-wielding will potentially double your offensive power at a price of being unable to block.
6) Near the end of the 'load' cycle, CTD. No errors, no other dialogue, just my desktop greeting me with a big, invisible trollface at how many times I've tried to get the game to work.
(NOTE: I am unable to load any saves as they all seem to have mysteriously corrupted at around the same time as the crashes started happening post patch. I lost so much progress I quit and stopped trying to fix the game for a while.)

I do have a rather extensive list of mods;
tinypic (dot) com/r/2lcmhhk/5 (I can't post links yet...)
(the ticked ones are the ones that are activated. The rest of them aren't.)
I also have the ENBseries modifications included with the Skyrim Enhanced Shaders pack.

My system is as follows:
OS: Win7 Ultimate 32-bit (NT6.1, Build 7601)
Lang: English
Mobo: Gigabyte P55-UD3
BIOS: Award Modular BIOS v6.00PG
Processor: Intel Core i5 750 @ 2.67GHz (4CPUs)
Memory: 4096MB RAM (3.5G usable due to 32-bit restrictions)
GFX: nVidia GeForce GTS 250 512MB (although DxDiag says approx. total memory is 2541MB, which I know for a fact is wrong.)
Display Res.: 1920 x 1080 @ 59hz
Sound: 16bit, 44100khz (in accordance with a potential 'fix' that didn't work) on Realtek HD Audio.
DirectX: 11

Am I missing something here? Are there any known fixes? Has anyone else had the same problem?
I read that a lot of people are having problems with crashes, but most of them can get into the game on an older save or something like. I simply can't get into the game for a start.
I've tried changing my sound.
I've tried disabling AA and Filtering.
I've tried uninstalls.
I've tried disabling mods.
I've tried Compatibility modes.
I've tried .ini edits (but they've all been reset after my reinstall a couple of hours ago).
All of my drivers are up to date.
I've tried plenty of different ways to get Skyrim to work, but nothing has worked so far. Any help would be appreciated.

TL;DR, I'm having CTD issues on load. What do? (Also, if you've skipped the text and just read this, shame on you.)

my game ends up not loading after installing mods

something about the order makes steam have a hissy

i have had to take it easy with skyrim 1.3 on mods & apply few, & apply them one at a time

i havent tried to reinstall yet, but i have had to make steam resynch files

just yesterday i had another code 51 error & instead of resynching i first restarted my system & then tried again - the game started & loaded

i also have total system crash blue screens - what im trying now is to launch skyrim to the save loading menu, then shutting it down - & then start playing. i think with windows 7 this "pre-loading" helps with memory crashes

i could be totally wrong on this tho

my only real use to you is to be able to say "i know your pain" skyrim is totally cool, & yet unbelieveably unstable - its MADDENING

Until you get it working, take out the mods and get them as far away from the situation as possible. No point in further complicating things until you at least have a stable base.
Bets on solution: When you uninstall (and do do that one more time), afterwards go into your \Program files(x86)\Steam\Steamapps\Common\Skyrim folder and after looking at what files are left over and acknowledging they are why you are suffering from all of this: Nuke that folder whole sale and let the game genuinely install fresh.

I haven't actually had any Steam errors, nor BSODs, so perhaps your problem is more serious than mine is.

When I've done the uninstalls and reinstalls, I have actually looked at the left over files. I also nuked them afterwards and let the game do a fresh install in that location. I know that it's probably my mod files doing this, but I want to know why. Skyrim ran fine for a while with plenty of mods installed, but after I stopped playing for a week or so I came back and nothing worked. I didn't get time last night to try Skyrim without any mods loaded, however I will try it later to see if Skyrim wants to run without any mods installed. Logic says of course it will, but then what's causing the conflicts? Most of my mods are texture replacers, with only a few actually changing the game (e.g. JaySuS Swords, SkyUI, Better Sorting, Categorized Fav. Menu).

The "vanilla" game can be fine in the "UAC" protected folder.

The moded game of Skyrim is NOT good to have in program files. Move steam. There are good guides on moving Steam. Google . I had to move steam out of (x86) because mods don't work.

Program Files (x86) is on 64-bit, no? I'm running a 32-bit system (not my choice, I would rather have 64-bit) not that it should make much difference, but I might look around at perhaps moving my Steam folder out of Program Files and say onto the root C:\ directory.
What problems were you having before you moved Steam? Was the game crashing? What exactly did moving steam solve? I just need details to try and work this out. If you were experiencing CTD's on Load/New Game or just spontaneously throughout gameplay then I'll give it a shot.

Also, I'm going to try running Skyrim with only the following mods enabled: Better Sorting, SkyUI and TESV Acceleration Layer, with ENBSeries loaded by default (I don't really want to stuff around with those files atm).

EDIT: Skyrim worked fine with only those three mods activated. It might look worse graphically than it should, but at least it's playable. However, I still want to know what's happened to other people, and if there is a fix for my problem so I can use most of my mods instead of just three of them at a time. Thanks for the help so far :)

Aye, selectively re-activating mods and testing for stability will get you on track for sure. Btw my only reason for ever moving a game's folder out of steam was to shift it from my raid0 over to my SSD for load time purposes. Sure with vista there were some annoyances user access wise for editing game folders but at this point I haven't encountered anything like that. Oh and perhaps really old games that can't take a >255 character path to files it needs.

To clarify......My game worked great....I wanted to start adding Mods, Thing is i will only use Wrye Bash to install mods. Bash would not work with Steam and Skyrim in the "program Files" directory. Once i moved Steam/Skyrim to C:\Games\Steam.... Bash started working.

Installed thru Bash :Bain Packages:
Spoiler
++ 000 - Detailed_Faces-2_00-26-2-0.7z (46B01F06) (Installed)++ 001 - Detailed_Lips-1_00-689.7z (F1054FF0) (Installed)++ 002 - EDT_Main-1598-1-01.7z (A5E147E8) (Installed)++ 003 - Enhanced_Blood_Textures-60.7z (4E7F4135) (Installed)++ 004 - No_More_Blocky_Faces-1_30-30.7z (CCE172B3) (Installed)++ 005 - HiRes_Tree_Stumps_and_Chopping_Block-955.7z (6454E08B) (Installed)++ 006 - Ebony_Lace-1572.7z (1830162C) (Installed)++ 007 - SkyRimCreaturesProject-69-1-0.7z (BA741A07) (Installed)++ 008 - Earth_and_the_moon_HI_RES_textures_for_Skyrim-1212-1.7z (3FCDD7A6) (Installed)++ 009 - Better_Gold_-_Shiny_v1-20-362-v1-2.7z (2958C023) (Installed)++ 010 - Calientes_Female_Body_Mod_BBE_v0_2-2666-0-2a.7z (C831B4CF) (Installed)++ 011 - SkyUI_1_1-3863-1-1.7z (B86AF945) (Installed)++ 012 - Main_file-2596-Final.rar (433C82C8) (Installed)++ 013 - Skyrim_HD_v1_2_LITE-607.7z (C677CFA1) (Installed)++ 014 - Vurts_Skyrim_Flora_Overhaul_v107_Low-Res_version-141.7z (14366836) (Installed)++ 015 - RWT_Medium_Res_v1_8-711-1-8.7z (1F8BB477) (Installed)++ 016 - SkyRim_Timers-3084-1-25.7z (A57C3565) (Installed)++ 017 - HQ3DMap-4817-1-0.7z (7D8F099C) (Installed)++ 018 - 0102_Tatsudoshi-2971.7z (45A3A223) (Installed)++ 019 - Skyrim_sunglare_V3_0_HD-116-3-0.rar (1415D6C7) (Installed)++ 020 - Improved_NPC_Clothing_1_8_1_MORE_DIRT_1024-2674-1-8-1D.7z (587BC8FE) (Installed)021 - ==Last==++ 022 - Quality_World_Map_-_All_Roads_v3-4929.7z (24A1AB70) (Installed)

Thing is, using Bash you can install and Uninstall with a mouse click. Steep learning curve , but well worth it in the end. You can see conflicts you never knew about.

Yeah, I'm only going to use a couple of mods for the time being. I'll manage without x2048 textures for a while xD
Although, I have tried selectively reactivating mods before, and once I thought I'd found the mod that was causing problems and deactivated it again, they started happening not too long afterwards. Vista would be a pain in the royal behind with its version of UAC. At least W7 makes things a teeny tiny bit easier.

I use Nexus Mod Manager to install my mods. I've heard some things about Bash, but I've never actually used it. For now however, I'm content with being able to play Skyrim again :)

So, to update my progress with getting the mods to work;

It seems that an update I did, whether to a mod that was causing errors or to ENBSeries itself, has fixed the issues I was having. I have a feeling that if it was a mod, it was the Skyrim HD 2k v1.3 texture set, as I am now running v1.4 of the mod and it is working fine. If not the mod, updating from ENBSeries 0.096 to 0.102 may have fixed the issue.

Either way, I'm now running all of the mods that I was in the first place. Thanks for the help guys. If need be, you can continue discussing CTD's and errors here, although 1) there's probably a better thread to do it in and 2) the new patch is supposed to fix many of the CTD errors people have had, so fingers crossed.

EDIT: I'm now running all of my mods bar one, as I no longer use the required mod (Immersive Environment 1.4, as I am using ENBseries mods as opposed to FXAA PPI), but it's there if I ever decide to switch back for any reason. This gives me a total of 42 working mods, patches and separate updates included.
