CTD with Convenient Horses

Post » Thu Sep 19, 2013 12:48 am

I keep getting CTD crashes after installing the Convenient Horses mod, though I can't seem to figure out why. I searched the Nexus page and I don't have any conflicting mods. I'm pretty sure Convenient Horses is the cause of the crashes, because they started when I installed the mod, and stopped when I uninstalled it, but I would really like to use this mod. Any idea what I can do? Please note I am a complete new player with modding and computer language.

Post your Load Order and wrap it in spoiler tags. That's a good start for everyone to see what you have to work with.

Is there an easy way to copy the list or do I have to completely type it out?

EDIT: if you use BOSS you can just copy-paste your load order from the BOSS log that displays after you run it. If you dont use BOSS you really should consider it. Its load order sorting can save you a lot of headaches.

If you are new you may have broken a few golden rules of modding skyrim that you were unaware of.

For example, you cannot remove mods mid-play through without reverting to a save from before you installed said mod. Skyrim "bakes" certain information into the save from mods you have installed when creating the save (like scripts for example).

Also, installing mods mid-play through can lead to problems as well. A lot of times skyrim wont add the mod's changes to an area you have already visited. For example, if you install a mod that changes the placement of light sources these changes wont effect places you have already visited.

What is means is your saves are basically married to the mods you use when you create them. So Changing around load order isnt a good idea.

I dont use convenient horses myself so i dont know if it suffers from the 2nd problem, but if you installed it mid-play that could the reason.

For testing purposes create a new save and see if the ctd remains.

I knew you can't just remove mods mid-playthrough, I didn't know that also applies for installing new mods. I'll keep that in mind when re-installing Convenient Horses for my new playthrough, and I'll look into the BOSS thing.

Yep skyrim is a lot more sensitive than oblivion in regards to mods. Removing them is much worse, but adding them can also have odd or negative effects.

I cant stress enough how important BOSS is when you use mods. The order mods are loaded in has a great effect on how mods play together. Imo, you should try to familiarize yourself with BOSS asap. Its extremely simpleto use as it basically runs itself- all you really do is click a button.

Not trying to force you into anything btw. I know using new software, especially when you are new to modding in general, is a bit unsettling. However, i know from personal experience that in the long run using such utilities sooner rather than later is the way to go.

Anyhow, enjoy the wonderful, but sometimes frustrating, world of modding tes games. The trouble is soooo worth it gameplay-wise!

Ok, just downloaded the BOSS thing and ran it, and it told me to 'clean' some mods? I didn't do anything about it yet and just played the game (new playthrough and new saves), and I had another CTD about an half hour into the game. Without Convenient Horses installed.
