CTDs at 5:00am

So . . . I have something weird going on. Sometimes my game hits a point where it will crash to desktop every time the gametime hits 5:00am. This happens immediately at 5:00am if my character is just standing around. If I wait/sleep to "skip" to a time after 5:00am, then the crash occurs within two or three seconds of the waiting ending.

It doesn't happen every 5:00am, but once it starts happening, it doesn't stop -- my only option is to move back through my savegames until I find one that doesn't cause this problem. Sometimes this means losing a couple hours of playtime.

My first thought had been that this might be a corrupt spawn point, but it's not -- I've had this occur in several different locations (Bravil, Bruma, the wilderness, and -- right now -- the Fringe of Shivering Isles). So I'm assuming it's some kind of script conflict or something. What's weird about it is that once the problem starts happening, it's stored in my savegame -- I can reload the game as many times as I want, and I still crash every time I pass that 5:00am barrier. I've tried to find a pattern or something in what I'm doing that might cause this, but there doesn't seem to be anything. When it occurs, I can walk back through my savegames and eventually find one that's unaffected, and then restart my playing from there. Once I do, it seems fine to do exactly the same actions I did before, and I can still avoid the crashes.

I've tried using Wrye Bash's "Remove Bloat" feature, but it says I don't have any bloat, and the same goes for the "Repair Abomb" feature on the savegames that have this problem. No help from that.

Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this or what I could do to fix it?

I had something similar, try disabling xuldarkforest.esp. In the followuing link the reason for this suggestion:

Of course in my case the xul wasn't doing this alone, was incompatiblility with another mod that got fixed. If the suggestin works, you will need to find that other mod.

A new version of The Dark Forest was released yesterday with the scripts rewritten. Could you both please install that version and see whether the problem goes away? Best to make a clean save between removing v1.03 and adding v1.04.

You are my hero. Removing xuldarkforest.esp immediately resolved the issue. Adding it back brought the problem back.

It would never have occurred to me that a Unique Landscape mod could have been the culprit . . . I had already tried disabling things that seemed like possible culprits (Tamriel Travelers, etc.), but I sort of forgot that the UL mods even had scripts.

A new version of The Dark Forest was released yesterday with the scripts rewritten. Could you both please install that version and see whether the problem goes away? Best to make a clean save between removing v1.03 and adding v1.04.


I just downloaded it and I'll give it a try. The problem is that just doing the clean save resolved this particular instance of the issue, so I'm not sure whether the new version fixes the problem. I'll leave it installed, though, and post back here or in the UL thread if I run into the same problem again.

It seems to be working, but I really don't know yet -- the problem is unpredictable. I've tried waiting various periods of time, and had no crashes so far, so it looks good. Like I said, I'll leave it installed and see how it goes. I'll post back one way or another after I've played with it installed for a while longer. Thanks!

The new dark forest mod seems to have fixed the problem for me too.
I will let you know if i have this issue in the future.

I'm surprised to learn about a UL problem, because crashes at a certain hour of the day is a well-known symptom of Salmo the Baker, which is in the OP's load order.

Perhaps Dark Forest scripts were conflicting with Salmo the Baker scripts?

Well... could be. But, (and Arthmoor can correct me if I'm wrong) I believe that the Salmo crashing bug has been around and known about since before the UL Dark Forest was out.

I should have said this . . . the very first troubleshooting step I tried was removing Salmo The Baker -- it didn't fix anything.

By the way, no crashes whatsoever since switching to the new version of Dark Forest. I'm pretty sure the fix worked!

Salmo has indeed been around awhile. It's also AI related, not script related. So it's unlikely the two could conflict.

I've never seen a rogue script doing enable/disable operations repeatedly like this actually cause a crash. Just reduce frame rates, sometimes by quite a bit, especially if it's lighting elements that are being scripted. Even so, that usually only happens when you're in the area to see the results.
