CTDs - What‘s wrong?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 9:46 pm

I played oblivion for few years now so I am familiar with CTDs, and I managed to reduce them, usually they happen on area transitions, and they were pretty rare.

Then I somehow messed it up... I think I deactivated DarkUId DarN and activated it again to change something (can‘t really remember what) without overwriting any menu files (associated with Oblivion XP, supreme magicka and alchemy advanced)

Now when I start the game, selecting Load/New game results in the game crashing with my favorite "Oblivion needed to close" message (even when I deactivate all mods) :(

As the game ran almost flawlessly before that it is not a hardware issue, and my load order is fine because I use BOSS...

I can‘t post my load order because they are all deactivated - I‘m uninstalling the game now to reinstall... once again.... (ran out of other ideas) :(

Any Ideas why this happens?

EDIT: actually here is a list of mods I use, this is NOT the correct load order

UOP Vampire Aging & Face Fix.esp << Use the Bashed Patch Tweak instead.

Natural_Weather_HDR_with_darker_Nights_by_Max_Tael.esp
All Natural.esp << Don't use both of these weather mods together. Suggest getting rid of Natural_Weather.

Natural_Vegetation_by_Max_Tael.esp << Problematic, suggest Enhanced Vegetation

What's wrong, what's wrong...
2 weather mods ran simultaneously, that's what's wrong. You must unpack Natural Weather 2.1.3, remove all textures and meshes related to weather (AFAIRemember - sky folders), remove the weather esp, keep habitat and vegetation only.
And why no esps are merged? Do you use Bashed Patch properly?

On the other hand, Natural Vegetation is not so problematic, I myself run the 200% versions and enjoy large trees at no FPS cost.

I‘ll do that when I reinstall but I doubt that caused the CTDs, as I sad these mods worked together, and I do use bashed patch properly, the problem is somewhere else...

Still thanks for these tips...

You could look at your save game in Wrye and see if any masters are missing.

Other than that I assume you use OBMM since you say you deactivated and activated. OBMM does not work well deactivating when you installed other mods after the mod you deactivate. Save yourself future headaches and switch to BAIN.

I would say you are missing files that base oblivion uses, probably from menus folder. My best guess.

If you are hosing the install then try to manually copy the DarnUI files, Oblivion XP, and any others that make use of the menus folders, or just install them again in the original order. A shot in the dark but what else do you have to lose?

Well I solved my problem and then I saw this post... you were actually right, it was the menus folder. I was looking at the Darnified UI readme and found that you should backup menus folder before installing.... however this line is not included in DarkUId Darn read me so I didnt do it, so I just tried deleting the whole menus folder (backed it up first XD) and it worked. So I just have to reinstall every mod that has menus folder in it... peace of cake...

Just thought I post it if some1 else has the same problem....

PS: I do use bain, but not for all mods since some of them are in OMOD format, and some I install manually (the small ones which I never uninstall anyway and FCOM related ones)

Good news. I use BAIN primarily but still use OBMM for some installs, especially DarnUI and map marker overhaul. However, when possible, I use BAIN to avoid issues like you had.

If a mod comes as an omod you can extract the omod to a folder which then gives you a BAIN ready archive 95% of the time, provided there are not a bunch of choices. If you want to take the time, you can read the omod script to create a BAIN ready archive. Worth the time I think as BAIN is a MUST if you install and un-install mods or change installatin order.

Either way, glad you fixed it and good luck!
