Judging by what he said in the interview, I can tell Beth learned from Oblivion to really take their time on TES:V. It's because of this that I have come to the conclusion that TES:V is much farther off than I previously imagined...

I actually have a reason to disagree. I think it may still manage to be a 2010 release. Think of this, all we have for the next Zelda game is a single piece of concept art and the assurance that it will be shown in full at E3 for the first time, yet it's been claimed by Iwata that it will come by the next october, still in 2010. I think people are learning Fable's lessons for them, to only announce something when you're reasonably close to done, and that bethesda may do the same thing, stunning everyone with a huge E3 announcement for TESV due by Christmas 2010.

Well, maybe.

Well, think about it this way. When they announced Oblivion, they kept developing it for more than a year until it was released. If they announced it in late 2010, they would have been working on it for almost 2 years, and if they released it a year later, in fall of 2011, they'll have been working on it for 3 years, which is similar to how long they spent on their other games. But honestly, I don't see a 2010 release as being likely. Because we didn't get an announcement in 2009, we wont get a release in 2010. Bethesda always, always waits until a year or longer after an announcement to release a game.

IMO, there is absolutely no chance of a 2010 release. An announcement, sure, but not a release.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. The development time from FO3 makes it seem unlikely for a 2010 release; and further thought provokes me to hope it doesn't.

What I said became a developer's signature? :) Do you know Todd Howard? If he wants a signature like yours, I'll gladly take a post from Todd Howard himself with my name in it as payment.

I'll rain on the parade: this could be Fallout 4 or a different IP, not a TES game. FO: Vegas comes out this year, right? And if the dev team has only stepped up work on their next game recently, then they wouldn't have a conflict of release dates.

Just bein' a pessimist, that's all.

I agree that it's possible, and it's even possible it's a brand new game, but I don't really think Bethesda would do that to their TES fans... I think they know how angry a large part of their fanbase would get.

Fallout 4 seems unlikely, with Obsidian and Fallout:New Vegas. But I agree, it could be a new setting.

it'd probably be easier for them to do a TES game, being that it's at this point a major cash cow (So why make a new IP that may not do as well?) and the Fallout franchise will already have a game on the market. Best not oversaturate, instead alternating between their two most lucrative series.

Well, there's been four TES games in a row - it's possible there might be another FO game, considering how much the media and fans drooled over FO3. =/

I do hope it is a TES game, though!

Only 2 TES in a row actually. And FO3 ended the trend anyway.
Bethesda used to do a lot of sports / racing games. They even had the Terminator licence for 3 games. (I don't know for 2029, but Future Shock and Skynet were actually pretty good FPS even though they were completely overshadowed by the big guns of their era).

Morrowind was Bethesda's first huge success (well, I think, I don't have the sales number of their previous games) and that's why they changed their business model from then on : they gave up developing themselves non-TES stuff until they found a popular franchise they could mold into their open world model (fallout)

I wonder if any of the Id guys are helping them "update their engine"? Ohwell, there's a ton of stuff to do for animation alone. Looking forward to characters with different heights and weights and etc. Also hope they're doing proper IK, for those who want to know you don't really need Euphoria or whatever, a good inverse kinematic solver can do plenty. Assassin's Creed 2 doesn't use Euphoria and the animations are great! That and a lot of little stuff, take the Sims 3 for example. Assuming they're doing it right npc's should be able to pick up almost any object in the world, move it around, etc. Little things like when sitting down for a meal they'll actually eat their food right instead of just sort of grabbing a thing and moving it back and forth towards their mouth.

Very cool. I hope the developers are doing it.

And their lame hand movements when they're in a conversation with other NPCs.

Hey xbox 360 gamers. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, but Bethesda is going to be developing a "project natal" title (TESV might use Natal tech).

"...70 percent of the publishers are now developing titles for Project Natal. The company revealed a modest listed of Natal developers during this past Tokyo Game Show. The list included names such as Bethesda, Capcom, Konami, and Ubisoft."

The line is near the end of the article.
