The next generation of consoles, or at least the next Xbox, WONT be coming out in 2011 or 2012. Read http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/105/1059470p1.html. Microsoft says they don't think they're halfway through this generation yet. Which makes sense, considering Natal will be extending the lifespan of the 360 for quite a bit. The Xbox 360 was released in 5 years ago, so if Microsoft thinks they aren't even halfway through this generation yet, that means we have absolutely no reason to think that TESV will be made for the next generation of consoles.

I agree with you that TESV won't be on a new console generation, but you can't take what Microsoft say about the current gen lifespan as fact. It's obviously not true, as it's a crazy business decision. If Microsoft waits a full ten years to release a new console after the 360, the the court is wide open for sony to release the PS4 and secure a HUGE playerbase. Consoles are almost 5 years old now, making them pretty ancient when compared to top PC specs. If they wait another 5 years... that's ridiculous. They might say they're waiting a full decade before starting a new gen, but I guarantee both Microsoft and Sony are planning out a next gen console release in 2-3 years. Natal and Sony's 'Gem' will extend the console lifespan for a little while, but considering Natal leeches 10% of the 360's processing power, top rated games could even look slightly worse than the big-hitters like Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed 2 if they utilize motion control.

I'm betting this year's E3 will bring information on Bethesda's next big game, and the following year's E3 will bring information on the next console generation, starting the hype-train. Also worth keeping in mind: the first console launched performs the best if the last two generations are anything to go by: PS2 outselling XBOX, and 360 outselling PS3 (ignoring the Wii since it has a different customer base overall). People are eager to grab a piece of a new console generation, and will snap up the first console released regardless of fan-based loyalties in most cases.

Why are some of you talking as if oblivion did everything it could for the consoles, it could have improved 3-fold IMHO. If they had been able to access utilities such as Umbra when they were developing and had more time to optimize the engine and scripts then we could have seen a much smoother and higher quality oblivion, no my friends, oblivion was just the beginning (i just realized that sounds like an ad for the next TES game :mohawk:

To my mind, it probably ahs more to do with us PC users exercising our unhappiness of the "consolified" UI and command system, all of which detracts from the PC experience of the game.

Well TES cant be PC exclusive, Bethesda needs the money from console gamers to fund projects. I know what your saying though, Beth should find a good middle ground between consoles and comps.

How would those of us who can't afford PCs play TES V if it didn't come out for consoles?

Dont let it worry you, TES will never be PC exclusive, Beth cant afford it, and even if they could theres no point.

I think its also important to remember that a ten year life cycle for a console doesnt mean a new one wont come out until that ten years is up. PS2 had a ten year life cycle but PS3 came out in 2006. It just means that Microsoft or Sony plan on supporting the platform for ten years. But doesnt mean they wont introduce a new one before that ten years is up. It actually makes sense to introduce a new console before the ten years is up so that you can grow your user base for the new console while still making money off the old one.

Why can't there simply be two different UIs for the different games? Morrowind was like that, with all 4 windows open, whereas on the Xbox it only had 1 large window open that one could change over to the next.

But production costs increase when developing for multiple platforms.

No, wait, what am I thinking? I didn't take into account the horrible trend (in the industry in general) of shoddy porting.

@Orzorn: Agreed. It can't be that hard to have two different UIs for different versions (platform releases) of the game.

Honestly, there can be a middle ground found rather easily regarding the UI. Morrowind did it quite well, I think. There would only need to be a few tweaks before it was put onto the console, and things would work out well.

Also, if you think about the money most people put into their consoles (specifically Xbox) including the base price, and the price of Live memberships and other accessories, they often spend enough to buy a pretty decent computer. Thinking in this light, nobody should be buying prefab garbage PCs, of course.

Do me a favor and put that in the suggestions thread? It worked fine once, why not try it again?

Now, to get this pack on topic, I speculate it'll be in Skyrim, a release intended for Christmas that will nbe postponed until conveniently before my 22nd birthday the subsequent march.

I'd rather see TESV on the... current next-gen systems? Is that right now, if the PS4 and next Xbox are the new next generation systems.

I say this because Beth has experience with the system and the tools they used to make Oblivion. I'm sure TESV won't be too far a stone's throw from TESIV, just improved to the point where it doesn't feel like the same game.

Also, what about trivia?

Doing a good port is still relatively cheap compared to the potential sales, since all the game data are done. One just have to design the game to be portable from ground up, and most western engines do that very well, be it Unreal 3, Tech5 or Gamebryo.

However, if the game is specifically designed and optimised for one platform, it's a pain to untangle all those optimisations and redo them for another platform.

I still believe Skyrim is the most likely place for TES V to take place. Though I honestly doubt they will release this year, or even early next year. Maybe late next year. Unless, of course, they are being VERY good at keeping secrets this time around.

Does anyone know what happened to this Paul Oughton character who said it would potentially be out in 2010? My guess is that he is a year or two off...

Black-bagged and off in a disclosed environment...

Just-kidding of course. Hehe...

Skyrim seems possible, though I wouldn't have my mind sent for a whirl if it was somewhere else. We don't really have much to go off of after all.

I'd actually be pretty disappointed if it was anywhere BUT Skyrim because of the fact that I've spent so much time convinced that it was going to be there. At first I didn't like the idea but it grew on me. Now if they made it anywhere else I'd be disappointed.

I hate the very thought of Skyrim. It's snow, and some trees. There is no way Skyrim isn't mostly snow.

No, I don't. Skyrim is snow. Try and tell me that Skyrim isn't mostly snow. There is no way it isn't mostly snow. Skyrim is snow, ice, and mountains.
