You can find all the arguments for and against a TES MMO in the corresponding thread. Of course ultimately it all boils down to personal opinion on whether it would work, but the main point is that The Elder Scrolls has always been a single player experience, with the world it is set in having a very realistic (as much as fantasy can be realistic, that is) feel. The NPCs have daily chores, going about their lives as though they were in a living breathing world. The world itself is a dangerous and treacherous one, filled with bandits, monsters and magic, most beyond the layman's understanding, and only occasionally is an adventurer bold enough to brave the wilderness of these lands. That adventurer is the main player.
Now imagine a TES world where like all MMOs there are more player characters than NPCs, all of them running about the towns and landscapes shouting "LOL", "You such a NOOB!", and "I am teh PWNZ!", and this wonderous world of immersion centered around believability has degenerated into a hub for immature players to mess around in, with the occasional mature player looking to dominate the world with a hardcoe guild, killing all the toughest enemies and PKing all the aforementioned immature players, and the odd spatter of TES fans that have been curious enough to venture into this land they love so much, and can be found drowning their sorrows at any obscure roadside inn.
As to the announcement we were all expecting from Bethesda, I'm also a little surprised that we haven't heard about it. But since we were specifically told that it would not be about the game Todd's team is working on, I'm sure we aren't missing out an announcement about TESV. We just have to wait patiently for any news on TESV, and remain vigilantly opposed to any ideas about a TES MMO.
