Currency

Post » Sun Nov 28, 2010 8:45 pm

Currency is a collective insanity. I'd like to see a game without currency that entirely uses barter (with a hidden value system running in the background, modifieable by various factors such as merchant/PC race, faction, disposition, location, etc.).

Currency is essential for any country/territory. Without it an economic system cannot strive. It can exist, but it would never result in complex societies and/or a high standard of living. It would be very similar to Native American tribes.

Like a few others have mentioned, I personally like the copper, silver, and gold. There needs to at least be smaller amounts of coinage than just gold.

No idea what they'd be called. Um... bits, lieges, and sovreigns, respectively?

The currency is needed as a bartering medium, the game couldn't even have a damn economy without some intermediary to make change between the bartering transactions. This is why civilization invented currency in the first place, not because we could just say "oooo..... shiny" when we see it.

So, i was thinking to myself while watching the podcast today, now that the septim line has died out and they're no longer the rulers of the empire...what will the curency be called. will it still be called septims?

There is already a post about this http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1161545-septims-or-something-completely-different/page__p__17050456#entry17050456

Hey, a guy like you wanted Reeses to keep his peanutbutter out of his chocolate. But he did anyways... Look what happened!

No but really that would be weird, bottle caps? They had BOTTLES bad then? INDUSTRIAL bottles?

Please, lets not be silly.

Though to the OP? I would prefer gold, septims are alright even if they do kinda not match the setting. But if you think about it, even IF skyrim suceded from the main empire, there would still be septims in circulation, so why would they use another kind? Unless it was a pride issue where they were like, NO SEPTIMS! WE WILL NOT ACKNOWLEDGE HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED. Or something of that sort.

We have a winner!!

And soon as I make my first sale, of pretty much anything, game over- my character takes his 3 Bar Wenches and retires, never to be seen again. :D

They might use NV's system, and have the supporters of the new cyrodilic empire still use Septims, but the seperatists may have their own, Nordic currency.

But if I had to choose, I'd have to go with the Bar Wenches currency thats been mentioned in this topic. Especially if they can make infinite beer like your housekeeper in Oblivion :P

While it's hilarious that they have only one denomination of money, they shouldn't make it a septim or drake in any case. I'd say every county should have a currency, with a gold standard that works everywhere.

Drakes sounds reasonable and cool. What someone said, there would be still a circulations of Septims, but everyone would probably preferred to call them Drakes which is a 'slang' word for Septims and because the coins have a dragon (drake, and actually Akatosh) on it that is symbol of Septims and the Empire.

So with time, name Septim would be forgotten and Drake would become official.

I love the suggestion of having gold, silver and copper (or some other metal) coins, but maybe it would be better if 1 gold would be 10 silver coins not 100?

"Dovakiins". They are worth the quadruple amount of a "Septim".

You know, yes. Yes it is.

But what is the point of people coming here and asking? I mean... there's plenty of 'topics' which have you know... maybe two threads. This one is already LONGER than the other.

So.. y'know... I mean... why bother?

Chyeah...

Anyhow, my two cents: I like Drake. I'll just call it GOLD anyways, but drakes are pretty decent sounding names. Hrothgars would make a lot of sense too. Maybe they could have some kind of denominations or something...

Meh.

I think it would be nice if after the fall of the empire, most septims would have been molten down and made into a new coinage.
But that you can still find some of them with collectors, or in ruins, sort of like Dwemer coins.

Would be fun if you could make an NPC collectors day to find him that rare septim minted for the coronation of the last Septim, or something.

You could find a half a coin here and there, is it worth the effort to pick it up?
