I think that the question here is, whether we would see Skyrim currency being simply regarded as a material it's forged from, -and in that case it would be mighty interesting to see something else in addition to good ol' gold pieces, which may find use in case smaller monetary fractions are to appear, which in my opinion is a log time coming necessity, both for fun and realism's sake. For example, given a value of gold that we are accustomed to (even if it makes but a small fraction of typical "gold" piece) it seems highly unlikely for a loaf of bread to cost so much. And if so, then we would be facing a massive inflation in land.- or rather a specific "regional" name, standing for gold, silver, bronze (etc.) pieces.
Now that might be an interesting problem for all the lore people out there, but the first question we might ask (in the second case) is either Skyrim (as a territory) has been always using Septims, -imperial currency- or maybe due to teir long tradition, and proud independent spirits they've been allowed to keep their historical "huscarls"? Maybe since one would imagine that one of Skyrim's only sources of income being the trade (although I'd imagine Nords to be pretty self sufficient) -and them being Empire's only strictly "mountain" province should produce many exotic and/or luxury goods, ones in high demand across all of Tamriel- they decided to adopt more common currency in order to boost their income - Well that's just a little of lore-fan-fiction from me, didn't mean to ramble  -
Also I think that it's highly possible that since civil war has erupted, two opposing factions may be pushing to keep/introduce their preferred variant of money. Then we could be dealing with a situation similar to the one in F:NV: We might have have some folks using Imperial money, (Septims, just because in the chaos that came after fall of the Dragonborn dynasty any eventual tyrants, pretenders and self proclaimed rulers had problems aplenty, leave alone currency reforms.), freedom fighters (Secessionist, patriots as you please) rushing with their "new" Nordic money, (that might refer, or even be a resurrected currency form times before the Septims, back when Skyrim was free), and others, who just take raw gold, money for what it is -value-.
I sure can't wait to find out, though.
