Current Feeling on Skyrim

Post » Fri Apr 08, 2011 4:20 am

Taking into consideration the information that has been released lately on Skyrim and its features, such as the Creation Engine, its sound technology, Todd Howard's video tour, etc, I wanted your feelings on whether or not you think they have been listening to your complaints/suggestions/hopes and dreams from both playing their past games and what you thought of the future.

Take for example, the fact that many have complained about the animations of things in past games, and how with the new Havoc Behavior part of the Creation engine, it could very well improve that. Also, I remember for those of us who what the stealth system greatly looked at, there was a whiteboard during Todd's video tour that seemed to focus on stealth. There are quite a few other exmples as well already from what I've seen: camera will no longer zoom to peoples faces, realistic branch movement and snowfall, etc...

Now I realize this so far has been just words, and we are real early into the information release, until we actually play the game we won't be able to know for sure, after all things could get cut before the release (HOPE NOT!), but I already feel that they have been paying attention to us, even though some others might say otherwise. Do you agree? What else have you noticed that you wanted changed/added/improved that looks to be fulfilled in the information on the game we've already received?

They eliminated classes and presumably attribute multipliers as well. They implemented perks. They most likely eliminated armor skills. They are giving the Nords a stronger sense of culture than the Imperials had in Oblivion.

Yes, they've been listening.

Bethesda doesn't give a [fishy stick] about the suggestions (or rather, demands) here.Instead,we fool ourselves into believing everything they make is %100 correct, and won't realize it until Tes 6 is announced.

I reserve my vote until I play the game.

From what I have picked up right now is that they've listened to during development suggestions for Oblivion. Stuff like dual wielding etc.
If you have played Oblivion go and watch the E3 hour long demonstration of Oblivion. It's not like everything they say is true, I want to see for myself. Not saying that dual wielding is out by this, just saying that overall I try not to make opinions about stuff I don't know enough of yet.

Yes, but only to a degree... And the result really depends on who they where listening to :D On most things - certainly not to me :) But I can live with that, as long as I get that Creation Kit :D

I think they've listened to the fans quite a bit, from all of their projects over the last few years. Do I think they've been directly listening to every empty-brained idea that people spit out? No. But the general consensus of ideas/suggestions, yes, I'd say they've listened and tried to improve upon their foundation to build an even bigger, better game.

Do they listen to what we have to say? Sure. Do they actually care what we have to say, and add things in because of popular demand? Who know.

A lot of the new technical information is great, and covers a lot of the complaints we have heard about past TES/Fallout games... such as horrible animations. However most of the changes/additions seem to simply be an advancement of technology because Bethesda wants to, rather then "the fans wanted it, so were doing it". In fact, there are a lot of very popular suggestions that have floated around since Oblivion came out that are missing (at least so far) from the Skyrim info.

At the end of the day, most game developers do what they want to do with their games. They might listen to the fans, but its kinda rare when major changes happen because of what the fans want.

Too few info to judge as yet. If they've readded spears, crossbows, better and moar factions, other means of transport, some useful spell effects from Morrowind, better races, moar variation and customization and so forth; then I'm inclined to believe yes, they did. Let's remain sceptical and see what they could pull off and deliver by the time of release. There's no need of judging now.

Hard to say, but the tendence is:

If it simplifye thir work ... yes
If not...probably not, or only if minor like crossbow and spear

Example: instead of fixing attributes and skills they seem to have simplifyed all even eliminating some.
added perk that can be read as birthsign and is absudly simple implement
combat we don t know if skill, attributes will have any influence, probably few if the Armor skill is scrapped.

So all in all they only hear if its simple or simplify their work.

I think beth will raise the bar again from what I have watched and read. No other games will match it not even DA2 or 2worlds2...

They have to listen to sales, ultimately.

Sales figures carry a lot more weight than a relatively tiny group of fans on a forum.

The move of the TES towards the mainstream (with all that entails) is self-perpetuating. Oblivion is designed to appeal to the mainstream so it reaches a larger audience and sales go up. This is good news so the same happens with Skyrim. And so on.

However, yes, the Devs clearly do read the forum and other gaming sites and consider the opinions. The reintroduction of spears and the efforts to recreate Morrowind's sense of culture is proof of that.

But I doubt they think of people here as a "representitive" group. There are many more people who will be new to TES and others besides who don't like internet forums. The idea is to expand your market without losing too many loyal customers (although some level of sacrifice is inevitable).

From the few announced tidbits which are floating around, it looks like the devs listened to a bunch of stuff here, and decided to implement some of the more trival details to address the complaints and issues with the previous games. The major points, and the underlying game itself, looks to be whatever they have been lead to believe will appeal to the largest segment of the general public, whether that general public has any interest in it or not, regardless of what the previous fans think, and whether or not that makes it a "better game".

If half of what I've heard about it is true, I won't be buying it, at least until/unless the modders have chopped out the blatant hand-holding, overhauled the character progression system, tweaked the levelling and scaling, and otherwise turned the game into something interesting, challenging, and enjoyable. To me, a wintry setting with a lot of stupid and boastful Nords has two strikes going against it already, and if the gameplay goes any farther down the road from RPG to FPS, and isn't fixable via mods, it's "out', in my eyes.

I'm mixed, I like what I've heard so far but I'll take a wait and see approach. I will say the New Engine is sweet and I can't wait to learn more about it and other features.

Just going on http://twitter.com/DCDeacon/status/23730564544598016, I'm going to have to go for a huge NO.

Sounds like they've been listening to everything except fast travel feedback. That's enough for me to be negative :P

They couldn't have really "listened" since they announced it so close to release. It's really probably far too late to make any drastic changes. The only people who could have possibly provided any real input that got considered were the fanatics who hung around that suggestion thread in the general Elder Scrolls section that existed ever since a little after Oblivion was released (no offense intended by the term "fanatic", I've been there a few times) and I've never ever seen any Bethesda devs lurking that thread anyway (they probably are smart enough, though, to sign in anonymously).
