Just read an interesting statement on portingteam.com:
Haven't looked for any new MW mods in awhile, but just browsing here, this doesn't look to be the case...

The game is more than 10 years old, so it stands to reason that most of the mods that would be made for this game have been made for this game. New mods are being developed, but the amount of output has diminished. What is the bigger problem is the mod hosting sites (Planet Elder Scrolls, Unforgotten Realms) are shut down and that has caused some mods to become lost, or temporarily unavailable. The following thread is a project to find all the mods that are out there
http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1454830-gold-found-on-the-internet/
Not currently. But I'd consider it a sad thing if the quoted statement is true. Since (no flame wars please) Morrowind is the best game EVUUURRRR.... and periodically I like to come back to it and play it afresh (one day I may even finish the MQ...)
Seriously, I do have a library of mods, but I'd like to think that there's still a community out there working on it and was looking for opinions of the current state of the MW modding community....
Yes, diminished output would be expected. I understand that. It's unfortunate that mods have been lost.
I wonder how bad the "damage" is. It looks like there are "mod detective" threads also for locating lost work. I'll have to have a look at that and see if any of my old downloads might help rebuild what's been lost....
Any estimation of the "damage?"
I think since the site's shutdown like elcrim, pes, and many more, but fliggerty has saved some mod's by making a new site to host mod, and his own site that host mod. So not every mod's lost, it's sad when you see the little work someone did and then it just gone. I been thinking of hosting my own website in august for mod's, to keep stuff up to date and also nexus has to many mod's uploaded at once and it make's the site run slower & slower every time a new mod's released.
I don't think there are that many mods that have been "lost". http://mw.modhistory.com/ has done a great job of backing everything up, though there are of course some more obscure mods that have probably vanished from the internet. The modding community is pretty small now, but it is far from a "wasteland".
Modding has always come in waves of activity. It's been slower since Skyrim came out, but that also brought many new players to the game.
I would say that the original quote about it being a "wasteland" and mods are "scattered" is very inaccurate. That person obviously is/was not part of the community here.
It's been 10 years, the time of daily 'my first house in Balmora' small mod releases has passed. Several big projects are still churning along though, like the code patch and MGE XE, pushing the graphics. Then there's quest/content mods like Tamriel Rebuilt and Julan Ashlander Companion that have seen activity lately.
And of course the very important http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g2PKBD0D9Gw. Once that is released, I imagine we may see an increase in activity again. I usually have little faith in engine replacer projects since many of them seem to fail, but OpenMW is doing really well, with fairly frequent updates and the last ETA I heard was getting a fully functional 1.0 release out by the end of the year.
I agree, very sad to see someone's work simply vanish. Presumably the original author would have a copy, but if they've moved on it may never make it back into the community. I'm sure if you want to bear the time and expense of creating your own hosting website, nobody would object and it would lessen the likelihood of future losses. I'm quite thankful for people like Flggerty who have put forth the effort to preserve things for those of us who enjoy the game, but aren't able to contribute creatively.
Good to know that at least the majority of the work is being preserved.
Morrowind modding isn't a "wasteland," but it certainly isn't as fast paced as it used to me, naturally. And about mods being scattered: yes, unfortunately some mods are very hard to come by. But I'd say the largest majority of them are currently backed up on Morrowind Modding History.
Povuholo really summed up what I wanted to say nicely. Hopefully OpenMW will bring an influx of interest in this old game.
Yes, this sums up well what I assumed was the case. A quick perusal of the threads showed many RELz's and WIP's and I knew that MGE (current incarnation is XE? --- feel free to tell me more. ), TR etc were plugging along.... OpenMW does sound exciting....now I really need to finish the MQ so I can start all over...
