Cursing

Post » Thu Sep 09, 2010 2:09 am

Did I make a mistake in using the word "cursing" instead of "swearing" or some other word? Im not sure if everyone is on the same page here.

In case there is a misunderstanding, I mean NAUGHTY WORDS. I dont mean an actual curse, as in magic or something. Or as a religious/spiritual thing.

I mean, dam, poop, doing the naughty, female dog... That kind of language. Sorry if I confused anyone.

Not sure whether you're being sarcastic.
Just in case...
Buy the book if you're interested in fiction writing / editing. It's great.

Their point is four letter words have a place in fiction - albeit a small one.
Overused they loose their punch and just become a nuissance one glides over.

Forgive me Skyrimer. In no way was I trying to be sarcastic. I am VERY interested on a book about on self editing when writing. Perhaps I should use more smileys for positive effect. :foodndrink:

jMinor swearing is okay and I like the fake swear words. as long as they don't swera alot, I think it would be better to have it than to not have it--denying what is real hardly makes for a good game or story,. imo

ASOIAF fan also? I agree, completely. I just want the advlt language sprinkled here and there. Not something shoved in your face every 5 minutes. I also agree that having no kind of advlt language, including damn and bastard would be really sterile and strange. Then again Im a 30 something year old, playing an advlt game, so Im pretty biased. :whistling:

I think a light sprinkling of curses would add a bit more flavor to the world. These are the Nords of Skyrim, the rough people of a rough land! I can already imagine the hurled insults in a drunken tavern brawl.

Leave the "modern" cursing to modern games like Fallout

I think the "curse" words that you will most commonly hear will probably be "damn" and "bastard" everything is either to modern or wouldn't fit.

Well that's pretty much true however I believe that there are 2 more words that would fit with skyrim's settings, one would be a homonym of donkey and the other would be a homonym of feces lol. People have been using those forever. However, I'd prefer more curse words from each race's respective languages lol.

If it's a dark game I can see "swearing" as a minor requirement for The I Word but I really don't care TBH. In Fallout 3 and NV it seemed forced most of the times so it just turned sour. The Witcher did cursing much better

they curse in Game of Thrones and it sounds 100% fine/natural. It takes place in a gritty + low fantasy setting like Skyrim.

Imo it adds to the gritty/dire tone.

I'll be shocked if they have anywhere near as much swearing in Skyrim as Game of Thrones

BTW 'Game of Thrones' rocks :icecream:

I'll hear someone curse occasionally, but certainly not every day ...

I can't really remember much proper swearing in dialogue from either two of those games.

I hope there is some cursing. To implement swearing effectively, curses must be used sparingly and appropriately. Profanity honestly can add to dialogue when it's used well. And anyway, we're going to be dealing with a rowdy lot of drunken Nords. I'd think some of them would be angry or rude drunks!

This
Also in a world where the gods are real blasphemy will probably be more serious than crudity.

I could easily be wrong but I swear there were some bombs in the recent Fallout games.

Oh yes. There was definitely swearing in the two most recent, and not just minor swears either. But it wasn't constant and there weren't many swears inside dialogue. Just enemies swearing in combat.

Take Jericho as a companion and there is a lot of swearing, mostly the f-word.

Fallout swearing - "That boy is useful as [censored] on a radscorpion". Good times!

I wouldn't mind lots and lots of curses in the elder scrolls, as long as they are words and phrases which we can type on the forums without them being censored, in other words, I don't think that they should be actual swear words that people use in real life. More like Captain Haddock and his illuminating vocabulary.

The insults and curses should probably just be made up ones again, however I do think that they shouldn't be so obscure that we don't understand how someone is insulting us. If someone calls you a mud-crab whelp, for example, and you've never played an Elder Scrolls title, you wouldn't be able to work out that you are being called an extremely irritating nuisance. Ideally the curses and swears would be awesome enough that if someone said the word to me on the street, I'd think "Sod you, you disgusting pig"

I could imagine people while in the heat of battle shouting, "Forfeit your life already you worthless, abandoned, reeking, pile of afterbirth!"

Sprinkled here and there for seasoning

No, I do not like dung sprinkled on my donuts, it'd be the same thing in this case.

I hope not, keep that filth out of my game please. Nudity and gore is fine, but cursing is just so out of place to me, besides, I dont want to hear it.

Hopefully its more on the lines of what MW did with native curse words like N'wah and Fetcher.

Completely agree with this fella.
