Cursing

Post » Thu Sep 09, 2010 6:30 am

I was typing a reply a few minutes ago. I didnt use any explicit words. No bombs of any kind. But I tripped the censor a bunch... I have no issue with that, this isnt my forum. But it got me thinking about cursing.

Was there alot of cursing in Oblivion? I dont remember. There was cursing in Fallout 3 & NV, including a few bombs.(iirc)

So my question is, will there be cursing in Skyrim. I dont mean Saturday Night Improv in Miami cursing, but natural cursing you would expect advlts to use in very specific situations. Sprinkled here and there for seasoning. The game is going to be rated M(probably), we ar in the land of the Nords, Viking-like warriors, and everything wants you dead. I expect a little cursing here and there. Now dont get me wrong, I dont need Sacrface level cursing(Scarface had a cursing mechanic... LOL, shallow game though) but I dont want Mario either.

Please opine my comrades.

I hope not, keep that filth out of my game please. Nudity and gore is fine, but cursing is just so out of place to me, besides, I dont want to hear it.

Hopefully its more on the lines of what MW did with native curse words like N'wah and Fetcher.

Well, i could see it being implamented, but use words they would use in Skyrim or TES lore like N'Wah (or howeverits spelled)

Adding things like this just because it's "mature" and "because you can" is never a good reason.

There was very little cursing in Oblivion. And in Fallout 3 there was just the right amount for an apocalyptic wasteland.
I think there will probably be more blood and cursing in Skyrim, but its in a much darker age than Oblivion.

That was native to Morrowind, you still got imperials saying b****** (like Mr. Lord's Mail).

And I don't see anything wrong with it, I hope they don't just step over it.

And Skyrim cant have any words native to its province?

Oblivion was soo.... so classic fantasy / real world like if modern swearing fit anywhere it would be in Oblivion, but if I really reallllly realllllllyyy dont want to hear any of it in SR, its a total immersion breaker to me.

Adding swearing because it makes sense, as it does in most situations?

Just think of how much swearing you hear on a day-to-day basis. It'd be insane to go out of your way to remove it.

Please opine my comrades.

As long as they don't use modern slang, I'm ok with it. I've always preferred fictional curse words though.

N'Wah

Like that.

There's an NPC in Skyrim called something like Arbel the Git. Git is sort of considered a swear word in Britain (albeit a very soft one)

Certain words like bastard would be fine I think, but others just have no place in a TES game.

I'm all for swearing...in some in-game language. I'd love to see what Nords use where the Dunmer had S'wit, N'wah, Fetcher...

Frozen Affairs--I can't tell if you're joking or if you are absolutely serious. lol....

I don't want to see cursing in every other sentence the way people tend to do today (seriously, too much cursing shows one to be truly lacking in vocabulary and language skills. I'm just sayin'....).

But some cursing would certainly be realistic and it wouldn't bother me. Just as long as they don't over-do it--but I trust Bethesda knows better than to over-do the cursing in SR, because they tend to add more depth to their games....

It would make sense in some context, like when somebody is angry, or just generally rude.

Dropping the F-bomb every second wouldn't be very neat...

It should either be implemented in small doses or some made up curse words should be made.

Well... they just wouldn't do that. I guess I agree with you, though.

I don't expect much, probably just some "local" made up stuff.... in the style of the previous games.

I hope there is some cursing. To implement swearing effectively, curses must be used sparingly and appropriately. Profanity honestly can add to dialogue when it's used well. And anyway, we're going to be dealing with a rowdy lot of drunken Nords. I'd think some of them would be angry or rude drunks!

Maybe a few Tamrielic curses, occasional real-world curses. But keep it in moderation, to stay consistent with the TES world.

Immersion breaker? If anything no swearing (Or cursing as this topic calls it) at all is an immersion breaker. What kind of a civil world has no swearing? One populated by Nords known for being brutal and showing no mercy? I think not. It would be more realistic if there was swearing (Don't get me wrong, Definitely not over the top) but at a normal state. Why should this be left out? OP has some good examples, Fallout 3 and New Vegas had swearing, But nothing you wouldn't expect if it was real people in the same situation

Things are more noticeable when they are out of place rather than missing though. So the middle ground would be to have not quite enough swearing than too much of it imo.
