Cursor mode versus mouse look?

Post » Sat Jul 30, 2011 10:46 am

To be honest, I haven't played a non-MMORPG game on the PC since TES: Morrowind/TES: Battlespire. I couldn't afford to get a good enough machine when Oblivion came out so I had to play it on the Xbox. Now that I have invested money into a good machine, I bought "Fallout: New Vegas" on sale the other day for PC. I tried playing it, but got dizzy as I had never played a PC game before that required me to use my mouse to control camera movement. I was used to the old cursor mode -- click, then look around. I would like to play "Skyrim" on PC, but my boyfriend says all PC games (outside of MMORPGs) are no longer cursor mode friendly because it's not "quick enough."

Does anyone know if Skyrim will support multiple camera control viewing options? Like cursor mode mentioned above?

Thanks in advance!

Morrowind worked the same way, did you have a problem with that as well?

Thank you for replying! No, fortunately with Morrowind I was able to change the settings on it but I've been unsuccessful in editing mouse control settings for newer PC games.

Hmm... can you explain the "cursor mode" that you're accustomed to in more detail?

Basically, in cursor mode, you have to click and then move the mouse to the edge of the screen in order for the view to change to the side of you, what's above/below you, etc. So while your character is walking, it doesn't matter if you move your mouse slightly -- you will always always be looking straight ahead, walking in the certain direction, and the camera is locked in on a certain angle. I'm finding with the mouse look option, you can be walking straight and suddenly be looking up/down/all around when moving the mouse, which makes me a bit motion sick. :(

I hope this makes sense!

Ah, I see. I didn't know that was possible to configure in Morrowind. Unfortunately it seems unlikely that this will be an option, as you're probably quite the minority here. If you're fine with console controls, I'd suggest getting an Xbox 360 controller with a USB connection and use that.

That's a GREAT idea!!! I'll try that then for the Fallout game I bought and if it works, I'll use it for Skyrim also (while secretly hoping it just comes with a cursor mode option, lol!). Thanks! :)

i HATE cursor mode in MMORPGs. but if i can switch it around it literally only takes a couple of minutes to get used to it. give it a go for 10 or 15 minutes and just run around and jump and attack some trees in oblivion and it will feel natural in no time. anytime i play console games (which is rare) i always have to reimerge myself into it for a couple of minutes beforehand.
