Custom Dungeons in Skyrim

Post » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:09 pm

So I noticed no one has been talking about the fact that Bethesda mentioned that there are numerous dungeons in Skyrim and they are all custom and unique. I for one think that it is great they finally came to the point that they are customizing each dungeon specifically but as long as it doesn't take time from the other parts of the game that are more important. I don't think it will as they have over 100 people on staff which gives plenty of leeway for equal distribution of man power across all aspects of the game.

Every dungeon in Oblivion was unique...?

No, there were 4 main types of dungeons with "cookie cutter" feels, but each dungeon was custom built in terms of structure. Honestly, I found them each pretty unique.

No, you are right. Somthing like 7 or so in oblivion were unique.
(Slight adendum, though they were all built individually, for the most part , roughly 7 had defining features that made them unique)

No, you are wrong. All of the dungeons in Oblivion were unique.

They used 4 main styles. But every dungeon had adifferent layout.

I may be wrong but I think only a few dungeons in Oblivion were unique and the rest all kind of looked the same almost, not to a tee but subtle changes here and there that made them feel different.

Technically, all the dungeons in Oblivion were unique but they were prefab pieces fitted together in different ways. The dungeons in Skyrim are all custom built, no piece of one dungeon will show up in another dungeon, it's pretty neat. You should never walk through a room and say "Hmm I think I've seen that skeleton somewhere before." E.G the Spiral entrance inside of like 50% of the Ayleid ruins. I'm not complaining about the dungeons, I felt like it was a new place each time and I know that it cuts down on production time but the fact that not only did we get dynamic snow but fully customized dungeons, I've died and gone to Aetherius.

Sounds good it'll feel less generic.

Hopefully the took the Lego approach again, like the previous two games. Only this time seriously upped the versatility of the different Lego sets.

That depends on your definition of "unique". While each dungeon in Oblivion technically might be unique in that the exact same layout has not been used twice, but it really didn't FEEL unique, and that's what's important, really. But from what I've seen on these forums, it sounds like Skyrim will do much better in this regard, how much better, I don't know, but if they can deliver on that promise, I'll be pleased. Because the lack of variety in both Oblivion's landscapes and dungeons was always one unfortunate aspect of the game for me, if Skyrim can do better, then at least in one respect of the game, it will deliver what I'd have asked for.
