Melee weapons could be interesting, but its been confirmed that there are none in the game. The only confirmed exception is the knife that you can use while holding a pistol, but light players are the only ones with any reason to use pistols.

It also appears that there might be a bayonet attachment for longer weapons, but there's no confirmation on this yet, just a few images of weapons with one on the front, from the alpha build.

The only problem with melee weapon is that they are usually over- or underpowered. Not always but sometimes.

Ah, but with proper use of a knife, the gunfight never happens.

lol, if I see you within 800 meters, your knife won't help, except to dig the bullets out

melee weapons only work for hack and slash games imo

methinks the days are gone for pointed sticks

Yes, but if you see me pop up 1 meter in front of you, you'll be stabbed before you fire.

Some people prefer melee weapons over projectile weapons (in some games) because the killing doesn't stop, an save ammo. When you use projectiles only, you will run out of ammo, or need reload in crucial situations. Or maybe even switch to a close combat weapon e.g. shotgun.

Military still carry melee weapons nowadays, right?

Well yea, If you manage to sneak up on someone, and you have the choice between a deathly silent Knife or a really loud unsilenced gun, Only the dead pick the gun.

The knife is mostly a tool these days, even in the hands of a soldier. If you are forced to try to survive in the wilderness, a knife is your best friend. Even in everyday life though, a knife is helpful to carry around, even if just to open things.

I was under the impression that elite units still use them for silent kills though.

I think you'll find that most prefer suppressed weapons, ie: MP5

you have to be VERY good with a knife and very close, not so much with bullets
there is very little hand to hand combat in wars these days

Once again:
It's not a FirstPersonMelee, it's a First Person Shooter. Knives and melee with your gun can be usefull in very close combat, but the focus is on SHOOTING.
I wonder how many times I will have to repeat this before the game comes out.

Grip, blade type, blade lenght, sharpness? (It's possible, but I don't like melee weapons at all)

FPS = First Person Shooter

Not Hack n Slash, not RPG, not fighting, it's SHOOTER. (I'm not trying to offend you, I'm trying to make a point towards everyone that really likes melee weapons in FPS games)

I'd love to see it for aesthestics (character customization), but not for usage.

I think Halo 3 had a Katana as part of your costume, but it couldn't be used.

Maybe just putting a custom paint-job on your knife? That's good enough for me, and it's fine otherwise.

Well, first off, Brink is a close quarters game. They even said, when I kill you, i will see the whites of your eyes. So there will be a lot of up close kills, and a knife is very helpful in these situations i think.
Plus, have you seen the videos on Youtube of CoD gameplay, of getting a nuke with only knifing? I know that game is a lot different from Brink, but if your a Light, moving up behind someone, and who have a damage buff or something, the knife is very handy imo.

You seem to care alot about not having knifes, and emphasizing that its a shooter game. Do u hate knifes? I personally do not have anything against them, and in certain situations they are very helpful. Just curious

Anyways, to stay on topic, i like the idea of customizing the Blade, even if that's just the colour or shape, or adding graphics on it, as long as it doesnt affect the gameplay, just different aesthetically . Either way, i think that would be really cool!

@oddworld (since i can't quote on this piece Of trash). I hate every melee weapon except gunbutt and knife. Why? Since they started making meelee something easy with high damage, I start hating it. Especially a certain franchise was really good at screwing it up. I don't like the speed of the melee either: you run, hit the button and before you release it, the other guy's dead. There's nothing intense when you get killed in melee because your ping is 5 higher than the other guy's. Since it's not intense, you won't feel anything personal when facing an enemy. SD wants you to feel these personal feelings.

I wish you had to pull out the knife with button a (with the same equipdelay as a pistol) and then press your fire button to actually use it, like in the old days.

Since we are getting knives in the game they should have a little customization, since everything else in the game apparently is.

Considering that only Ops are going to have knives when holding a pistol, having a cosmetic tweak or two for blades or pommels wouldn't hurt anyone, pun and irony intended. People (probably) aren't going to use not going to be anyone's main weapon unless they have some sort of backstab fettish, and even then it's not a huge deal, I'd be more worried about sticky bomb spam than blades.
