Custom vs Premade

Don't worry dude, I'm sure most people (myself included) are fine that you made this poll. :)

Yeah since some people, such as myself, didn't saw the older polls with the same topic anyway....

I've always preferred custom classes. I remember in sitting in Highschool carefully plotting out my primary, major and minor skills for at least a dozen or more different characters, and then trying to figure out what stats I was aiming for, what my background was, what factions liked me and which didn't, and of course, what my race was(Due to reading a lot of Forgotten Realms at the time, primarily R.A. Salvatore Drizzt books, a lot of my race picks ended up being Dark Elfs. LOL). I am quite certain that I used up at least one full notebook intended for some subject or another, filling it up with all the different classes I'd made. It was so much ^^ I did the same with Morrowind, though I was already out of HS by then, so instead I'd just write on notepad on my comp.

Premade classes have never really held much attraction to me, and I honestly don't imagine they do for many other people either, unless they just want to jump in the game that much quicker without having to worry about figuring out stats and skills and the like.

What about you all?

In Oblivion I play custom class, becuase as you know leveling up your skills means leveling up your stats.

I have to agree with those who prefer custom classes. I suppose premade classes might be nice for those who are new to the game and aren't yet familiar with each of the skills and which would suit the character they have in mind. After all, being able to custom pick your skillset might not be so useful if you don't know which skills you'd want anyway, on the other hand, if you just pick say... Mage, you have a good idea what kind of character you'll be using. It also might be helpful if you just want to jump into the game quickly without the need to spend a long time creating your character. But for me, the greater freedom to customize your skills to fit the character you want to play afforded by a custom class is far preferable to any convenience using a default class might offer.

MW has major, minor and misc. skills, DF has primary, major, minor and misc. skills. There may be a trend here.

Maybe we are not looking for "pros". Maybe we just want to play the game.

I tend to variate. While I definitely love the feel of making my own custom class, I tend to get worried that it just won't work if I mash all the things I want together and that I'll end up with something that's unworkable and difficult to pull off.

I found premade classes to be more balanced and thus less uber. Sometimes it gives me a better roleplay experiance and as I am playing Morrowind with GCD now I still can play the way I want and level normally. Just for fun I once played a premade Knight who abandoned his god and became an Assassin instead (an crappy on he was at the beginning) and it actually really was fun. When he first delivered a critical strike I got a strange sense of accomplshment. Maybe I just like to make things difficult...maybe I am just strange...

In OB your skills directly influence your level and attributes...and to achieve the highest level possible in game you need to improve the skills you're gonna use the most. And premade classes are rare to have all the skills you would choose if you had the chance, which you do through custom classes...

BTW about just wanting to play the game - creating a class takes less than two minutes if you know what you want...and considering it's stuck to you during the entire game (except through codes of course) I prefer sparing those two minutes...

This I understand, I'll still alwys use custom :P but I kind of get why you would do it.

Yes, I know what I wan and what i want are in the pre-made selections. I just want to play the game, not create a super-powred crazy person (The game does this to you no matter what so I do my best to neutralize it). I like a challenge

This. Arena was my first TES game, but Daggerfall is what got me truly hooked/obsessed with the series, and Daggerfall is what I'd sit in class all day daydreaming about and designing classes for.

And, wow, lots of votes on this poll. Seems the overwhelming majority of people prefer custom-made. Regardless, I do finally have a new insight as to why anyone would pick a premade class. I can see where none of those builds will let you get to powerful. Course, neither are any of them seriously under-powered, which I sometimes like to do to myself, thus why I still always go with custom. If I want a balanced, not overwhelming character, I'll make it myself, if I want an over-powered character, I'll make it myself, and if I want an under-powered character to try to see how hard I can make the game, I HAVE to do it myself ^^

Did premade the first time through on TES 3 & 4, have done Custom everyother time. Voted for Custom, I feel more in control of the type of game I want to play.

Sneak - Security - Spear - Short - Light - Illusion - Athletics - Acrobatics - Destruction - Mysticism

I'd switch out the last three for -{Climbing - Streetwise - Crafting (traps - repair)}- if I could

Same. I've made at least 10 characters names Drizzt, and at least 50 dark elves because of him. I'm just waiting for a good dual wielding system so I can do it properly.

On topic, I always use custom. Premade classes seem stupid to me; the idea of being skilled with many weapons is a nice idea, but in TES it's useless.

I guess my answer would be, it depends. I love creating custom classes, but I also love some of the existing classes as well. It really depends on my inspiration for the character and how deep I'm willing to go into creating him or her.

I always make a custom khajiit class.

Alchemy
Alteration
Conjuration
Destruction
Illusion
Mysticism
Restoration

I'm currently doing the well known level cap breaker, getting them to one hundred before
I hit level two and that good stuff after, so I picked some of the easiest to level.

I usually use

Alchemy
Armorer
Marksman
Blade
Hand to hand
Illusion
Light armor

Sneak is easy to level after the adoring fan follows you around from the arena,
So I don't keep it as a major.

I'm sure you can see I love sneaking, potion making, and using poisoned
Enchanted arrows on enemies while I go looting, so its all built off that. =)

I prefer custom classes. But I have played as premade classes before. Obviously my 1st ever TES character was a premade on Morrowind. That's because I didn't know much about the skills etc, so just went with whatever I got from the questions. But now I just used customs, they're better seeing as you can make any type of character you want.

All of my characters in Morrowind and Daggerfall have been custom classes. All of my characters in Oblivion have been custom, except for 1 time when I used the "Agent" class.

I actually usually use preset, I find that Bethesda does a pretty good job with them. But I will use a custom if I want something specific or tweak a class a little bit.

Ive always played a custom character. I used to switch about from fighter to mage to thief between characters.

But reciently ive come across a class I really like. Its a thief that uses magic to supliment his thief skills. I have alteration for levitation and lockpicking. I have illusion for charmelion, invisibility, and to frenzy people. Mysticism for mark and recall spells, telekenesis, and other transportation spells.
One of my favourite techniques with this class is when I find an item I want, but cant get because an NPC is in the way, I set down a mark, cast frenzy on the NPC run away so they chase me, and then recall myself back to where the item is, grab it and use one of the interventions to get away.
