Custom vs Premade

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 3:33 am

I've always preferred custom classes. I remember in sitting in Highschool carefully plotting out my primary, major and minor skills for at least a dozen or more different characters, and then trying to figure out what stats I was aiming for, what my background was, what factions liked me and which didn't, and of course, what my race was(Due to reading a lot of Forgotten Realms at the time, primarily R.A. Salvatore Drizzt books, a lot of my race picks ended up being Dark Elfs. LOL). I am quite certain that I used up at least one full notebook intended for some subject or another, filling it up with all the different classes I'd made. It was so much ^^ I did the same with Morrowind, though I was already out of HS by then, so instead I'd just write on notepad on my comp.

Premade classes have never really held much attraction to me, and I honestly don't imagine they do for many other people either, unless they just want to jump in the game that much quicker without having to worry about figuring out stats and skills and the like.

What about you all?

Ill usually create it with a similar name, replacing 1 or 2 skills ehre and there. Spellsword for example, ill tweak depeding on the character, I use modifiyed versions of that quite a bit.

I play custom-made. I started out with a premade class in Morrowind just to get the hang of it and I recreated my toon with the selection of skill I prefer to have. This is more so for custom-made when I started playing Daggerfall. Its a bit risky when one pick a premade class in that game (you would never know what you would get in terms of advantage and disadvantage).

Just pointing out that premade is also made as a template for NPC.

I'm one that lives for the adventure, so I never pay much attention to classes, or the numerics involved in my statistics. Even with character generation, I will just put a random honorific in the class section so that the NPCs will address me as anything from "kinsman" to "friend" to "'luv".

I'm a svcker for an interesting background or background story though. When making a character, I will imagine their life up to the point of being dropped into the world, and then proceed accordingly.

Custom-made. None of the pre-made classes have exactly what I want.

I never, ever use preset classes. Neither Morrowind or Oblivion had the exact combination that suits my usual play-style. Usually I wind up making a class with the skills and everything that I think I'll be using first, and after a few levels and seeing which skills I don't actually use I'll then create a new character and another class that's even more specific to my play-style.

Custom. No TES class has ever aligned correctly with the skills I would rate as most useful for being a chameleon agent. How can you "fit in" to a society, yet still be an effective fighter? Well, I concentrate less on "integrating" with the culture, and more on seeming like someone "just trying to get by". So Restoration, combat skills, and marksman, combined with something from stealth or magic that seems good for making money...

I really think people should stop making polls about this.
It is undeniable that making custom classes is almost always favorite to preset.
Even if they have the right Skills, it may not have the right attributes, the right name. There are a lot of different possiblities for around 20 classes to subjegate

All of my characters have been custom, and will be.

Current mains were made from customs, and wouldn't change them for a pre-made. Plus, not many classes are linked to more of a..chaos blend :chaos:

I always make a custom class and select the skills myself, even if it sometimes the class can be quite similar to a pre-made one.

Pre-made. They often have great skills selected, that allows my character to not be overly-powerful, but not be stupidly weak. If I create something myself, I always end up too strong, or too ressourceful, which, imo, ruins immersion.

I often create my own magic classes, though. I always felt as though a lot of them lack in variety.

Today you spend all that time tweaking your characters face... The other options are SO limited. We need faction reputations, dis/advantages, many skills, and ability to tweak your attributes.

I use custom. Only once have I picked a Warrior, and that was in TES4. Damn was I pissed when I found out that he was a spellcaster anyway.

Custom
I find the idea that 2 warriors will always have the exact same favoured attributes and skills somewhat odd anyway
1 reason why I prefer MW or DF character generation over Oblivion
There are certain skills that it makes sense to see as core to an occupation. They make good primaries/majors but minors can hold the interests/specialities that make 1 person different from another in that occupation

Custom. I love to customize. Any aspect of a game that let's you be creative gets the most attention from me.

Spent most of my time in San Andreas painting all the taxis.

I always use custom classes, but they are almost always are an edited premade class. Sometimes just with a few different skills, sometimes with only the name in common. So I will have a nightblade, rogue, spellsword or a mage but with my own skills for it.

Premade, hands down. It fits better with the lore I think. Otherwise you belong to a class that no one else in the game belongs to.

Premade if:
1) the skills make sense for the class description (e.g. in TESIII, hand-to-hand was often a minor skill, even if Blade and Axe were major skills. Or having unarmored and some armored skill in the major/minor slots - why???)
2) the class actually has an impact on in-game interactions with NPCs, etc (e.g. having class-specific quests, NPCs seeking out specific class player characters, etc)

Of course I want the option to have a custom class.

OB's premade classes worked only because there were so few skills to choose from in the first place
MW's premade classes didn't work as well, because there was a lot of redundancy (multiple weapon or armor skills in the Major and Minor categories), and because of strategizing to get that 5x attribute multiplier sometimes means having Acrobatics as a Misc skill is better than having it as a Minor or Major skill - even if you want to play the class Acrobat.

I usually use pre-made because for me, it fits better within the story that is TES. I do however create my own when I feel the need to make a specific character like Drizzt, I mean come one, who hasn't made a Drizzt character?

I prefer custom classes, since you can tailor them to your style. Besides, pre-made ones tend to be useless.

I think my very first character ever was premade, after that I went custom. Always.

Definitely custom, the only pre-made class that I have ever used in either Morrowind or Oblivion is the mage class.
