Customization/crafting

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 4:35 am

Skip down to the short hand version of the suggestion if your not all that into details.

Bit like my suggestion that i posted for new Vegas about two years ago about how you can customize your weapons why not armor? well I read the game informer and watched videos but didn't see much improvement on customization as in vanity bit. Customization as in equipment has always been top notch. In short I will give a expanded details version of this suggestion for those who want to read more about my thoughts on the matter and a short hand one. They will be labeled, skip to them if you like. If you do not like something about my suggestion please if you are feeling out going, go ahead and tell me through pm or post and I will try to accommodate my suggestion so that the majority of us feel comfortable with it then we will see what happens right?

DISCLAIMER: I am not intending for every bit of this to go into the game I realize some of it would take some time and wouldn't fit into even the DLC options. This is a discussion thread only. After I have collected enough feedback and feel comfortable that everyone doesn't hate every single thing in this thread I will make a poll thread and ask mods to close this thread.

So to get in to this start by saying I like the new forum and I must say I was surprised by the news of a 5th installment to the elder scrolls seeing as I was highly sceptically and felt a lot like Bethesda had abandoned us for fallout. I am very happy to be wrong. :celebration: Those of you who don't know me or have never heard of me on here. Well lets just say I made tons of suggestions that went into new Vegas and I plan to do the same for this game. Though i know those poor souls have thousands of pages to read through in the other I am happy that the moderators abandoned there silly one thread rule that took a lot of attention off game improvement. They must of not known that people get inspiration from others.

-=SHORT HAND=-
Would you like to customize your weapons & armor in skyrim? (armor dies, different sword tints, carve words into armor and weapon, pick feathers for arrows, augment armor, ect.)

-=EXPANDED DETAILS=-
(this will be long winded as warned. I did try to accommodate people who hate reading.

Customization and crafting was lightly talked about in the interview and I am positive everything we come up with will be discussed or has been by the Bethesda team at some time or another. But, large support does not hurt a suggestion. Just because something has been talked about doesn't mean they do not need us. With that in mind...

-=Armor dyes=-
Very simple actually. If we take a trip back in time we find that early on people would die there clothing using animal blood, berries, graqes, leaves, and many other things for a bit of vanity. So if you have a leather armor you could die the pauldrons red, chest plate black, and so on. (I know morrowind fans will love this seeing as the parts they dye would be the parts of armor we use to have.) You could also die your facial hair, your hair, and mustache of course. BUT! to die the equipment you have to either buy or collect the necessary items to do so.

-=Weapon tints=-
For a very long time our blades and bows and arrows have been personalized for our own individual taste and needs. They added a new crafting element in the game. You can now make your own armor and weapons. So with that why should you not add a black stained blade or so on to your weapon of choice? Maybe you like the ornate Akavir (katanna) that have a black twisted dragon going up the blade made by a master blacksmith or what ever it's your weapon and it's 2011 you should be able to decide what you want not just have the same sword everywhere.

-=Weapons and armor names=-
It is often weapons and armor's are given names by there user. For example Umbra the sword who had the trapped soul of Umbra a powerful warrior who cut a piece of a dadera lord himself. (still waiting to figure out what happened to him greg keys!)
So why not allow us the player to carve out and name our equipment as we see fit unless it were a quest item or already named. (you cannot take out a scratch in real life from a weapon can you?) It isn't like we couldn't do a similar bit in oblivion when you enchanted a weapon.

-=Munition Customization=-
Munition is basically arrows bolts and what ever else you can shoot or throw at an enemy. The suggestion is simple. Allow us to pick up feathers and other items off animals we kill or buy them from the store and place them on our bolts and arrows. Allow us to customize the color of the arrow and let us make our own arrows by cutting out branches and roots from a tree. Each type of wood and feather or whatever item you add will have an effect on your shot and what it does to the target. A dragon scale arrow made from the bones and scales of a dragon would do fire damage or whatever and look plain awesome. This could easily be implemented if given enough time for artist to make good use of it. after all there are months left till release and we still will have dlc.

-=Augment Weapon and Armor=-
As it is you get a sword or a bow and its always the same unless you enchant it. What if you could do more. What if you could upgrade your weapons and armor. What if you could add weight too your sword to balance it out, or add a different grip to increase damage, or add a deer skin to your bow to increase its power and range, maybe dragon scales to your armor to make it fire proof or semi fire proof, or put dadroth teeth on your arrow heads or what have you. To be honest I would crap my pants if this went in. It would bring so much more fun to killing animals and beast and dragons. Being able to actually use parts of an animal instead of just cutting off meat or whatever. If done properly this could be very big for this RPG.

maybe more later after feed back.

I'm guessing customizing our armor and weapons is going to be possible since we have a smithing skill and the way they talk about on Twitter, there will be "Multiple" armor slots. It could mean it is like oblivion but they seem to be too secretive for it to be just Oblivion. I'm expecting something more akin to Morrowind. Hopefully it isn't ridiculously broken like in Morrowind.

Well still I have no way of knowing what it is they plan for it so hopefully we can do a fire run in here and see what we come up with and even if they don't use it on skyrim immediately you never know with dlc right?

If it is a slot system I will be disappointed. I feel like that is a bit outdated and would like to see some innovation in our armor and weapon system.

I really agree with you on the morrowind part. I think Bethesda heard us all when we called for a Elder Scrolls Renaissance these past few years. Everyone feeling like Bethesda lost the artistic touch of morrowind and the lure of the rpg roles in it. I did see that the artist are taking a kind of new approach to inspire the devs and they are making BEAUTIFUL art very impressive work.
