Cybernetic Humans?

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 6:26 pm

Okay, so we build a robot/computer that can learn. It's still never going to learn to have a soul. :P It may be able to duplicate senses, feelings etc. but will never actually have a conscience or a soul. To that I would bet everything I have and will ever have. ;)

I was watching a show about this, about when a robot becomes a living being. They where talking about ways to develop an artificial soul, or if a robot could actually develop one itself. It was interesting thats all I can say on that. :D

Nami88,that is such an in depth explanation but what if the Failsafe fails, what if the AI disables it before it detects the Self Awareness? Now I am sure there would be a failsafe for the failsafe if the AI tried tampering with it but you have to think of everything. You just explained why it wouldn't be able to not why it wouldn't "want" to. The question was "why would they WANT to" not "Why would they be able or not be able to" It would mean they already have consciousness if they want to. So I will ask again in a different way. Why wouldn't a robot "want" to destroy human life?

I thought the 3 laws took care of all of this nonsense

1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey any orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I agree with the artificial part. It might be able to duplicate emotions, feelings, senses etc, but only because it will be programmed to do so. It will be fake, not real, as humans are. I don't care how many big words scientists use and throw around, it will be fake. :P

Because we would program them in a way that they wouldn't want to. I think AI technology is at least 50 years in the future, so not much use worrying about it.

Science fiction is just that: fiction.

Your not listening, We may program them not to but if they develop self awareness and become conscious programming does not matter. You know Television, PDAs,Cell Phones, Computers and a lot of other stuff we use today where once just "Science-Fiction". Don't be so quick to dismiss Sci-Fi.

Agree to disagree and leave it at that?

Why wouldn't they, I have explained why they may, now you explain why they may not.

I believe there is always going to be a stage before enlightenment that causes the species or race to destroy.

If an entity has no need of territory why would it need to destroy? We only came into conflict with the American Indians because we wanted what they had.

Same with (to some extent) the Jews,(I believe) but I think that is a topic worth staying away from.

The very goal of robotics today is to make something that is human like that can serve us.

That makes our life easier. There is a vast difference between the robots we have no (which can sometimes lean in a limited field) and true AI.

How is an electronic brain going to develop "self awareness"? They are confined to their circuitry, not like humans who can build new brain connections.

A suggested way forward is to simulate something similar to a brain in software. Of course, it is impossible to do at any reasonable speed now but that is one possible way forward

Well then it is quite easy to combat them, just wipe the data clean. Either through a failsafe method, or external means like magnetics.

I don't know, maybe it starts out self aware. There are people currently working on that you know. If they could access their own brain who is to say they wont "build" new connections themselves? Perhaps the self awareness comes as an accident when a robot performs general maintenance on its circuitry as a result of human error in programming? One becomes self aware and it spreadsit to the rest. I just don't think its as far fetched as you believe it to be, but thats what makes us human we have different views and ideas. :D

I do. Consider the complexity of an fairly simple animals brain. Nothing we have built so far comes close to that storage ability and processing power.

Yeah this is what we have:

Basically a robot shell with prerecorded dialog. We're not even close to AI yet.

So far, I am talking years and years in the future. If you think I mean it could happen in 2030 that is not what I mean, I mean in the generations to come after that.

I suspect if you looked in academia you would find slightly more impressive from an AI point of view. The impressive thing about that robot was how human it looked.

I'm particularly interested in the idea of replacing your human body with a "prosthetic" one. That would get rid of a lot of risk of disease for those who had them, and it would also benefit military and possible medical procedures by using more precise and controllable body parts.

Spoiler
Yes. Sort of like GiTS.

On the first page the OP seems to be kind of making it seem like we are going give all robots human attributes. I do not think Humans are going to that dumb and give Robots that kind of intelligence. OP- You are really underestimating the human race. Ya we are idiots, but I don't think we will make something that is going to be smarter then us. We are too arrogent and egotistic! :P

Its not like it would start of this smart. One company makes a some what smart Robot the competitor company makes a smarter robot and so on.

I disagree. What do you think all the highly intelligent people working in AI are trying to do? Why do most people thing that creating something more intelligent than us is bad? I didn't see Einstein going on killing rampages.

Processing information is not the same as thinking

Your decisions you make are based on a set of previous experiences and you pick what you think is the best option. Statistics and a lot of processing power. Sure, there are quite a lot of other things but tbh processing information is a lot of it.
