I see you're from Cairns. Well, good luck dude, sounds like it's going to be a pretty intense storm. Hopefully it's getting overly hyped, as the media is prone to doing. Australia's having a rough time at the moment....

Hey there fellow Cairnsinite (Cairnsian? Cairnser?), you all strapped down? Luckily we're outside the predicted stormsurge area, and we got our roof re-screwed a few months back, so we should be okay, but I'm definitely not looking forward to spending a week or so without power. Where abouts are you?

Btw folks, http://www.weatherzone.com.au/satellite/'s a good image showing the sheer scale of this thing.

Gordonvale, all bunkered, pets inside, roof bolted, bin filled with water matresses under tarps, looks to be one hell of a ride, (I was in Tully when Larry hit)

Boohoo. You Queenslanders, complaining about all your floods and cyclones and things. Well, we have to put up with forty degree weather down here. It svcks. Today I was sweating.

I mean, Donkey Cavity was telling me about how flood water cut him off from the rest of Brisbane a while ago, and all I could think of was, "Yeah, well, I'm hot!"

:P

In all seriousness, this is one of the worst things to happen to Australia for a long while (excluding Oprah). You guys have my sympathies.

Queensland's economy is certainly not going to be good, if only Oprah had come now, then we would have had billions of dollars of cyclone relief :(

If my conversions are right that's an equivalent cat 3 hurricane. Nasty.

Good luck, and keep your head down.

How come it's called a Cyclone? I thought winds at 250km is considered a catagory 5 huricane. The most powerfull. What am I missing here?

I hope all you people there, will be ok. Please take care.

Hurricanes spin the other way and only occur in the northern hemisphere, Yasi is a cyclone (or typhoon) because it is in the Southern hemisphere

I never knew that. Thank you for your explanation. I didn't think they would call it another name just because it spins in the opposite direction.

That thing is going to be a (Censored) and with all the flooding that Australia has gotten in the past couple months it doing to cause a whole lot of damage. I don't think it will approach what Katrina did to New Orleans but it will be bad. :brokencomputer:

First of all, I hope all you guy up north come out of this okay. You've already got more than enough to deal with :(.

Strap your body to lead pipe with leather belt and you will be all right.

Unless he gets swept out to sea :P.

I mean, Donkey Cavity was telling me about how flood water cut him off from the rest of Brisbane a while ago, and all I could think of was, "Yeah, well, I'm hot!"

Victoria had some flooding (not as bad as Queenslad, sure, but still quite bad for Victoria) and has been pretty damn hot this week :poke:.

I never knew that. Thank you for your explanation. I didn't think they would call it another name just because it spins in the opposite direction.

Yup, its true. Another tidbit is that cyclones and anticyclones (they spin the opposite direction) move most of the world's weather around. Got rain? A cyclone did it. Clouds blowing away? A cyclone did it. Tropical cyclones are the ones which grab the headlines, the ones which knock cities down and break levies .
