Cyrodiil, Forest or Jungle?

Post » Sat Apr 10, 2010 12:34 pm

As some of you may know, Ive been working on a Cyrodiil mod for a little while now. Ive re-began work on it but feel I want a change. Should I make Cyrodiil like Oblivion had it? Or should I make it more like th jungle it was originally described as?

Pro Jungle-
More unique
Possibly prettier
True to original lore

Pro Forest-
Faster to make
Easier to make
True to Bethesda's current vision

Heres some videos of how it currently looks with me going for the forest look.

And heres the thread for the project-
http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1051193-wip-argonia/page__st__140

Please note-this isnt where you voice your dislike of Oblivion or whatever. If it isnt to help this current project and its just to say your disappointment, please do it elsewhere. Thank you :)

Personally, I prefered Oblivion's "slap the lore in the face". Only highlight in an otherwise bleak game.
However, we are all aware it's meant to be a jungle, I won't reference it further as it's a given.

EDIT: With that said, I find it hard to believe in your forest, to the same extent I didn't believe in Oblivion's. Dunno if that's what you're looking for.

Jungle.

Even a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperate_rainforest would be great (save the tropical rainforest/jungle for Black Marsh).

EDIT: the forest in the videos isn't quite believable. A closely dense forest won't have lush grass fields like the Great Plains or Savanna growing beneath the trees.

I'd go for a temperate rainforest. B)

Just create large collision boxes and paint flora on it. Too dense to walk through. I know, it's cheating, but it creates a nice illusion of impenetrable growth.

Maybe not, but this is not earth, maybe lush grass can grow in tamriel forests, after all there are giant mushrooms that are equally not "quite believable" in vvardenfell. Plus, that grass looks great :D

Anyways, I'll second the temperate rainforest idea, sounds like something that could appeal to most people :)

I'd go for jungle, as we've seen the forested version and it would be nice to see something different.

Cyrodiil is supposed to basically two countries tied together by the Imperial City. Western Cyrodiil (Clovia) is everything inbetwen the end of the Clovian Highlands and Bravil besides for the Great Forest and near the shore of the river. This was accuratley done In-game. Eastern Cyrodiil (Nibenay) Is basically from the Gerall mountains south, and then over the river at Bravil (which is Nibeneese) and south on bothe shores. it is supposed to be Sub-tropical and Extremley swampy. This was done almost correctly in the game. The imperil city is supposed to be eight Island connected by Aylied Brides, with a giant tower in the middle and one bridge to the shore on the western side. It was supposed to be city over grassland, and was less true to the lore that Nibenay (being one island) but was kinda close. Circling the city there is supposed to be extremly thick rainforest that dies out at around Sancte Tor. This forest doesn't die out quickly but slowly thins. On the river-side there is a constant rainforest all the way to Topal Bay, but it is extremly thin and the farther south it goes the thinner it is. This was NOTHING like the game.

I would like to see Cyrodiil a giant rain forest like mentioned in old lore of the pre Oblivion area...I never liked the generic shiny happy people environment in TES4.

*sigh*

Do which ever you really want to. You won't please all the people, so better to please yourself in something like this - that way when someone comes griping you can always have the conviction and satisfaction of realizing your image for Cyrodiil.

Maybe the guy doesn't give a damn either way, or just wants to hear other people's opinions on what it should look like.
Honestly, no reason to get so whiny over a little question.

I like Alaisiagae's idea a lot, temperate rainforest where appropriate would be very nice indeed.
I'm going to say have a mix of both, but with more jungle than forest.

Given that we will have large forests in Morrowind - or rather, Skyrim - when Cyrodiil comes to fruitition, I voted for "jungle". Also, because Cyrodiil "in forest" has already been done, it's called...err...hmm...something like Unconscious or so.
A large desert would also be cool.

Yes, I'd love to see Elsweyr in Morrowind! :D On topic, I voted for a mix of both, and I like the temperate rainforest idea. :)

Although I think Oblivion did a fine job at creating meadows, forests and swamps... I do wish that the SE section was more like a Jungle, as opposed to just a wet forest.
vote: mix of both forest and jungle. ( I hope you plan on keeping the Colovian Highlands though)

Good point. However, I would assume some real-world mechanics somewhat apply - and that most green plants (angiosperms and gymnosperms) compete for sunlight, nutrients, water, etc. Game mechanics limitation: the complexity is be overwhelming.

Plus, it makes me sad that grass doesn't grow well on our lawn. Only moss, clovers, lily of the valley, ferns, and ant-hills. :P

Hmm, well I'm not very sure with this. I'd prefer a Jungle personally, but I can only imagine how difficult something like that would be. How about a mixture, to provide something unique?

I'd like to see the temperate rainforest done. Seems like a good compromise between lore and TES4.

Definitely the jungle variation: the idea of Roman-style buildings with bright green vines crawling up them is something I really missed in Oblivion.

The Leyawiin mod that Princess Stomper made uses the lore-based jungle idea, and it's just fantastic.

You should make your mods because you want to make mods, not to please others. Do whatever floats your boat.

Personally, I'll be downloading no matter how you decide to do it :goodjob:

It really depends on you. If you feel you have the time, energy and will to create a jungle, create a jungle. If not, recreate Oblivion. If it where me, I'd have the flora slowly get more jungle-ey and eventually swampy the closer to Black Marsh it gets. Forests in the west, Jungle around the mid-east, and a swamp-jungle to the far-east. But, as I said, do as you like.

I'd like to see you put more into the cities, myself. The cities in Oblivion where really lacking, I'd like for there to be larger, more detailed cities.

The Imperial city should also have a sense of danger. Dark alleys and thieves should be a common sight. Make use of the mist.

Uh - the only one getting whinny here is you.

I simply suggested that the OP worry about keeping themselves happy. As I've seen modders create bits of Cyrodiil and get hounded by both lore hounds and Oblivion players, in the end the modder spends almost as much time fending off loud ungrateful idiots as they did creating, fact checking and testing their creation. Watching them get frustrated and annoyed because of that kind of bs wasn't fun but in the end they created wonderful mods with their vision and were happy with their creations - which made all the idiot criticism easier to bear.

Simply put - when it comes to a long difficult project I'd rather the creator be happy than you

And yes that is my answer to the OP's question it simply wasn't an option on the poll which is why I took the trouble to write the whole thing out in simple English.

A few images. Slightly similar to the Bitter Coast in some ways, but different enough I think:

I'd prefer a jungle, while I generally follow the philosophy that, as far as canon is concerned, the most recent installment in a series is considered the most "valid" unless the creators specifically declare it otherwise, in the case of Cyrodiil, I prefer to think of it as a jungle not because it's closer to lore or anything like that, but simply because it would make the game more interesting, if you feel the need to suddenly change things in fiction, the change should at least either make them more interesting, or correct aspects of the story that didn't make sense, changing Cyrodiil's appearance didn't accomplish the latter for me, and it definately didn't make the game more interesting, so I'd prefer the jungle.

Although I guess I could understand going for Oblivion's portrayal, as that would be easier to do since you can base it off what has already been shown in the game, not to mention it would be closer to what was shown in Oblivion, which would be pleasing to those who favored how Bethesda made Cyrodiil look in the game, but it seems a little pointless to go through the effort to recreate Cyrodiil in Morrowind if it's just going to look the same as in Oblivion except without some of the modern graphical effects, at the very least, I'd suggest taking the oportunity to correct anything you didn't like about how it looked in the game myself.
