Daggerfall on 64bit

Post » Sat Sep 11, 2010 8:42 pm

I have been working with dosbox72 for an hour or so, then I found 73 was out tried playing with that but it crashes when I go to start daggerfall, I tried different things and I came acrossed http://blog.chase.net.au/index.php/2006/01/the-pain-of-daggerfall/ I was reading how he was doing and then I found he got it working by getting a special dosbox version in http://www.elderscrolls.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=212018 but I had to register then I found the page was gone, I was hoping someone here could help me out, even a little bit, either by linking the special version or advising the best way to get it running, I would love to play it on my 64 bit laptop but I guess playing it on my dad's 32 bit desktop works too, I got it to load up in dosbox72 on it but the mouse selctor wouldnt move and I was unable to get past providence selection on the desktop, please help me T_T

You don't need a special version of DOSBox unless your computer is total garbage, and in that case you should probably just stop trying now (we're talking less than 1Ghz, 512mb RAM). Download DOSBox 0.73 (latest version) and try again. There are stickied instructions at the top of this forum.

Why bother with an older version of DOSbox when you can use the newer?

If the mouse doesn't respond, press CTRL+F10.

Install Linux. I was never able to get Daggerfall working on my friend's Vista machine (through Dosbox, of course; crashes abound), but it runs pretty much flawlessly (well, as flawlessly as Daggerfall gets) dosboxing it in Ubuntu.

You dont need to post just to tell me I should give up, If I was gonna give up I would have already okay? And Jormungandr I use 72 cause 73 likes to crash in vista, Tarvok Spellbinder guess what? I got it running in vista useing some great advise I found http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=812542!!! im super happy now, anyone that has trouble with 64 bit or vista (maybe even both) should go to that link, the only problem I had was having to cd to dagger instead of mounting it. Thanks to anyone that helpped that I left out :)

Many people don't understand how much of a resource hog DOSbox can be. They think "DOS games re way old, I should be more than able to handle this" without realizing that DOSbox needs a beefier machine than you would think.
And Jormungandr I use 72 cause 73 likes to crash in vista,

Wasn't aware you were looking between 0.72 and 0.73.
I assumed the "special version" of DOSbox that was behind that link was 0.63 CVS; that's way old!

Funny that you found the answer in a linux forum :) Although I don't see what's different between that and what the stickies say to do here.

Yeah I guess I just like to make things difficult haha, but now that I got the game running and changed the controls and escaped the beginning dungeon, the world is SO BIG im unaware where the main place to go to is, but I guess I should find the answer in a guide and not here.

Don't find the answer here or in a guide, find it in the game! You'll get a letter soon enough.

Dosbox has always run Daggerfall fine for me (still running .72, don't see any reason to upgrade until the Ubuntu repos do). What I'm looking forward to (and unlikely to see) is a linux-specific patch that fixes a mouse input but that affects very, very few games... Ultima 8 among them. For some reason, either Linux doesn't process the pressing of two mouse buttons (necessary for jumping) properly, or Dosbox doesn't interpret what Linux does send properly.

So I automatically get the letter huh? I guess I will do a dungeon or two while I await the letter. Oh ultima 8? I play ultima 7 and 7 part 2 using exult, if you play those you should look into them.

Strange. I don't have, nor have I ever had any problems with DOSBox in Vista (32Bit). Both 72 and 73, plus a number of CVS builds have worked without a hitch.
