Try changing some settings in DosBox, for instance setting the cpu to "dynamic" helps a lot. Also, try setting the cpu cycles to something like 30000-40000 (I wouldn't go further than that because if the cycles are too high, the game starts lagging considerably, at least in my PC).

And allows better graphics etc?

No, or at least not yet. By that I mean that there's a project which aims to remake the Daggerfall engine (http://xlengine.com/), but unfortunately it's still in its early stages and the game is barely playable (no NPC dialogues, no quest system, etc.) - actually, the project is FAR more than a "simple" graphical overhaul, since the creator wants to implement all the planned features which got cut from the final game.

Your best bet to enhance the looks of the game would be to enable anti-aliasing in dosbox by setting "opengl" as the render with "advmame3x" in the scaling options.

render distance and much more?

This will be featured in DaggerXL, but for the moment you're pretty much stuck with the default view distance.

EDIT: just found http://theelderscrolls.wiwiland.net/?title=Daggerfall_:_EyeOfArgonia_EN. Never tried it before, but judging from the screenshots it looks like it does make quite a difference.

How do you adjust settings in dosbox? I use the Daggerfall bundled as a dosbox install, and when I try to launch the exe it starts up Daggerfall. Is it the CONF file that I need to alter?

Unless you're using a frontend such as D-fend, yes, you need to modify the conf file. For instance, if you want to modify cpu cycles, you have to edit the line "cycles=" below the [cpu] label.

Anyway, my suggestion is to download and setup a frontend, because it makes game configuration much easier and faster.

What do you mean by "automatic thing"? I'm pretty sure you're using DosBox, because it's the only way you can play it on modern systems (if you're running XP, you may have been able to run it without dosbox, but in this case you're bound to meet the infamous "invisible bug" sooner or later)

I think he means the installer on UESP. It provides a pre-configured DOSBox and sets up Windows shortcuts to run it.

The DOSBox config file should be in "Bethesda Softworks\Daggerfall\DosBox.conf"
