Daggerfall - can you use a game pad?

Post » Fri Feb 11, 2011 2:40 am

I'm intrigued by Daggerfall, but hate playing these games on the PC. I played Morrowind on the XBOX and fell in love - and subsequently bought the GOTY edition (and, admittedly, added some of the big PC mods to it through the black magic available on the xbox) for the addons. Then I played Oblivion (and all the DLC) and Fallout 3 (and all DLC currently out).

So.. what I'm trying to ask is - is there a way to use a game pad on Daggerfall so that I don't need to play with a keyboard, the way the console versions play? (and, by extension, can I do this with the PC versions of the later games, TESIII, TESIV, FO3?)

Thanks - I know it's a stupid question.

You can set up a wired 360 pad to be exactly like FO3 and Oblivion, but Daggerfall and Morrowind do not translate well to gamepad controls. The Xbox Morrowind has a totally different interface than the PC version, it just would not work.

Hmm...

Interestingly enough, there does seem to be a joystick calibration option under the control options. I don't know if DOSBOX is able to interface with a joystick (or if the game controllers of today are even remotely compatible with the joysticks of old), nor do I know if a person who has played primarily in the XBox has the l33t ski11z to figure that out (I don't even have a controller, so that's beyond me), but it's worth a shot.

DOSBox have a keymapper (CTRL+F1) and there you can pretty much customize anything regarding controls. So it should be possible to use a game pad fairly well I think, but it might be a bit troublesome to get there.

At least I think so, I haven't really used the keymapper :P

Thanks everyone - it sounds like it might work, so I will have to give it a shot.
