Daggerfall w/ DOS32A Memory Extender

Post » Thu May 20, 2010 12:35 pm

I was reading the UESP article on http://uesp.net/wiki/Daggerfall:Corrupted_Savegames after one of the posters on this forum said something about one of his becoming corrupt.

I noticed the reference to DOS32A as a memory extender for Daggerfall. As far as I know, Daggerfall doesn't call DOS4GW or anything so I'd have to http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/TOOLS%3a%44OS32A#Games_that_embed_DOS4GW.EXE_inside_the_game.27s_own_EXE_file tedious operation. I was wondering, before I try anything, if anybody has tried DOS32A with Daggerfall, and, if so, found any benefits to its use?

I tried a few different dos extenders, but didn't really notice any difference I have to say. Some flat out didn't work, and some worked just the same. If you're hoping they might resolve some of the more major issues folks experience when using Daggerfall natively on Windows, then I'm afraid it *probably* won't work (I'd be happy to see contradictory evidence though). Most of those issues are to do with how the DOS Virtual Machine (NTDVM) interects with the OS, and none of that is handled by the DOS extender. It's primary jobs are to do with switching back/forth to extended mode.

However the poster of that article clearly has seen some benefits, so it's not impossible!

Hope this helps,

The main thing is that DOS32A is generally faster than DOS4GW, but a slow computer is needed to notice any difference, so I don't really think it's worth the hassle.
