Daggerfall, DOSBox, and Vista x64

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 1:09 am

I have Daggerfall running on Vista right now and I've noticed something strange. Just recently, some of the wooden doors in Daggerfall, specifically the ones that have an opening animation, sometimes are misaligned inside the stores and homes. By misaligned I mean they are one or two feet off the ground. They still open and all that, but sometimes I find them hovering.

I know Daggerfall has a lot of bugs, but I'm curious to see if anyone else has seen doors floating off the ground like this normally? I'm trying to figure out if there might be some sort of strange compatilibity issue with Vista x64 or if it's just coincidence.

Thanks!

Quite frankly I don't know how your processor or OS would cause that. That sounds like some DOSBox or game related error. Could you post your config?

You know; the same way CPU and OS nuances affect any other software compatibility issues. If Vista x64 or my C2D or a combination of the two aren't 100% compatible with DOSBox, then the occasional anamoly or artifact may be experienced. I'm just hoping it's a known issue with Daggerfall, however rare. I don't recall ever seeing anything like this when I used to play in DOS or XP.

Daggerfall's performance is affected by the environment in which it runs not only quantitatively, but qualitatively, as well. I remember the difference in running the game on a P90 as opposed to a p133 (or was that a 300?). Speeds clearly changed, but different speeds changed differently. Oddly enough, the faster processor actually slowed down enemies, making it easier to evade their hits. And then there's Windows XP specific bugs. It wouldn't surprise me a bit if, under a Vista build of Dosbox, we end up discovering yet more strange behavior.

As for me, I've never seen a hovering door, but I did recently see (Dosbox under Ubuntu 64) a doorway that had TWO doors in it. Not a thick doorway with secret doors on both sides. but two in literally the same place. Had to open them both to get through.

I've witnessed the "two doors inside of one another" thing as well. I'm on a fairly run-of-the-mill Windows XP Pro system and single core Pentium 4 2.40GHz, though.

Happened to me lots too. On the old 486, on the P133 and while using DOSBox.

I seem to recall something like that on my XP machine as well.
