Daggerfall v2.13 in DOSBox Quest Fulfillment Query

Post » Thu Apr 15, 2010 12:42 am

Forgive an old new player (or do I qualify as a new veteran), but considering I just never got far in the game when it was new due to my limited cashflow and cheapo hardware at the time, I can't be sure if my issues relate to running D'fall on DOSBox or if they are script problems from the game itself..

I'm noting as I develop a couple of new characters that quite often the quest giver seems to completely ignore me when I return, choosing to just give me a new quest when I return & choose the TALK option. Just now, I did one of those (my ex-lover has been kidnapped, and her idiot cousin has decided to pay the ransom, can you stop this in one of three ways) quests. I managed to get through Castle Necromoghan and kill a knight that triggered a (kidnappee's destiny is sealed) pop-up, and shortly thereafter I found the ransom payment and collected it (so, my thinking is that I definitely completed one option, but most likely completed 2). When I returned to the quest-giver, I got ignored. I had saved just before talking to him, so I re-loaded and approached him a few times. After one or three encounters with him, the result changed from giving me a new quest to actually telling me he'd given me one task to do and three ways to do it and I failed. From then on, every time I approached, I got this last result.

Now, are these sorts of things the things that have always occurred in Daggerfall due to standard game bugs, or is something amiss?

Thanks for any feedback y'all can provide.. (back to the dungeons for me.. This is fun stuff)

I think this is not a bug. Quest givers usually won't talk to you until their quest is completed. You either still did not fulfill the requirements for quest completion, or failed to complete it in time. Check your Journal. Does it still mention the quest?

I am concerned about the possibility that I didn't do it in time. (Is it just me or is 21 days a bit tough for getting somewhere that takes 5 - 7 days to travel to, then having to get the objective complete whilst regenerating health inside the dungeon, then STILL having 5 - 7 days left for the return trip? I guess this goes back to my comment in my other thread that maybe I'm just not "good" at CRPG? *heh heh*) From what I saw while within the dungeon, I DEFINITELY collected the ransom collateral item (I even was able to sell it later), and I thought that the pop-up granted after killing the knight (whose complete identity I never knew, 'cause as soon as he/she saw me, I was under attack) was indication that I had completed the second option. I guess I'll just have to assume I was late getting back..

I am just guessing, but selling a quest related item may have blown the quest.

I'd given up on being able to get the quest registered as complete by that time. There was some other issue..
